What drew you to your Chapter?

Never being a fan of the odd last man standing bravado SMs can be involved with. I avoided them for the longest time.

Who cares for super human glory boys? Guardsmen show real grit in M40! ;)

I was always intrigued by Raptors though. As they seemed to use their brains a bit more than the average SM.

With the Damocles Crusade and reading more about RG. I decided they were the ones I could related too for similar reasons as SyNidus :D

Before choosing the Ultramarines I could never hold down a single chapter/legion and would switch between what army I wanted to collect every month or so. I originally settled on Space Wolves and built a sizable force of them (4K points) but then changed my mind and sold them all prior to painting a single model.

However after reading the 30K novels Know No Fear and Mark of Calth I was drawn to the Ultras. These novels depicted them as not the mary sues of 40K that everyone loves to hate, but enriched them with more character and gave them faults etc so that they weren't infallible heroes.

This added with the Greco-Roman theme sealed the deal for me because I love Roman history. I've tried to draw on this Roman theme as much as possible with my marines, giving all my Sergeants Gladius style power swords, Helmet Crests and Roman Cingulum Belts/Pteruges.

Also with the 30K setting, it really allows me to make my Ultramarines my own and so they aren't bound by the strict fluff of 40K. They are very much a DIY army within the pre-existing Ultramarines fluff.

To be honest, the most interesting of the SM or CSM are actually the lost legions. Maybe it's an Amundsen thing, but I always want to find out more about the unexplored parts of a setting. I know it's unpopular but I personally would like for their lore to be introduced into the setting.

I of course have my own idea for one, based around a Zhuge Laing like Primarch that was engineered as a navigator. I won't bore you with the details but the idea was they were sent in secret to stall and break up the Nids into the current Hive fleets rather than just one overwhelming swarm.

The cover art for Rogue Trader has always blown me away, and thus I have the Crimson Fists. CF also come across less 'jobby' than other chapters, and aren't either plot-armored up or having the enemy job for their benefit in the fluff. They're prestigious in-universe and have a long history in the actual world as a Chapter that is never as documented as Ultramarines or Space Wolves, but always gets some press or mention by GW -- so not forgot ala the Flesh Eaters. The Crimson Fists are also depicted making difficult moral decisions, and being fairly benevolent to humanity at large.

My lot really grew out of a paint scheme. I’d done the RTB01 marines in a blue enamel scheme (proto Crimson Fists, I guess), then drifted off into Guard for a bit. When I came to paint up my Space Hulk terminators, I wanted to avoid the blue thing, and ended up with a sort-of quartered black and green scheme. And from then on, they’ve always been a DIY chapter.

They’ve bounced through various names, and adopt differing chapter tactics every edition (so far they’ve been Dark Angels, Inperial Fists and currently Ultramarines), although my favourite was that phase around 4th edition when you could use traits to properly customise things - I had some very punchy assault marines for a bit back then.

Despite all that, my head fluff has stayed the same - the back stories, the characters, the names, the ongoing history. In the end, it’s the fluff that defines them as my chapter, not the rules of the day.

"The best leaders don't just create more followers, they create yet more leaders."

I have always loved the concept of a warrior that favors the defense of others with oneself, and, if need be, the defiance of unjust orders on principal alone. The Wolves have, after The Wolf King book discusses the way the Legion was reforged by Russ due to what happened on Prospero, always seemed so fiercely independent as to actually draw me to them.

The Space Wolves are constantly getting too much Wolf, however, that's alright; I know the Wolves are, at heart, defending the people. After all, without a population, there is no Imperium. The Guard, the Astartes, and all other people that make up the fighting forces of Mankind must come from somewhere, and, again, without a base population of people, there's nothing to provide those that can defend their fellow men and women, on the battlefield.

I personally just like the concept of a force of fierce heroes so utterly willing to do the right thing that any attempt at a law that goes against said right thing is utterly ignored, on principal alone.

I think, above all else, the Wolves and their penchant to try and remember, amongst very few other Chapters, their basic Humanity, from before they were elevated to Astartes, is telling.

I honestly hope that people find and enjoy whatever Chapter they happen to finally research and come to love; by all means, good luck, and above all, have fun.

I can not really pick just one Chapter but have to say the Rainbow Warriors caught my attention back in 89. And now I can field at least a squad of a 117 Chapters. The Death Spectres have to be my all time Favorites True Albinos at the vert edge of the Imperium .

Calgar in Terminator Armour.

Actually I liked his power armour model in 2nd too, but I liked the overall aesthetic of Wolves more.

However at least Ultramarines never have to worry about being forgotten in each new release of the game.

Hmmm.. my favorite chapter. I've always looked at the rules first. Started with Ultramarines like most new players. Sold that off and went to Dark Eldar, sold that off and went to Necron and on and on it went. I love the T'au because the sculpts are amazing. Their troops have really cool poses as well. But my favorite Space Marine Chapter has got to be Luna Wolves. I remember reading about Loken and really enjoyed the character and his outlook. I really like the fact that the "Favored Son" turned against father and died for it. I'm starting to learn more about Abbadon and the more I learn the more I like him. Finished the Talon of Horus a little bit ago and I'm just about ready to dig into the second book.

So I guess my favorite chapter is The Black Legion right now. There are some close 2nds though base on rules or fluff. Blood Angels / Rift Stalkers / Salamanders for the Imperial side of things and Word Bearers for Chaos. But The Black Legion takes the cake right now and has for a good while. I'm really hoping that rumor about the new Black Legion models in the Space Wolf box is accurate. Because I would easily spend $1000 updating the meager line I have right now if that was the case.

Corax's story drew me to the Raven Guard. Out of all the loyal Primarchs, he is the only one that wasn't royalty or at least revered by the population of his homeworld. Guilliman, Russ, Lion, Dorn, and Khan were all adopted by rulers on their home planets. Sanguinius was nearly worshipped by the common people (after they decided not to kill him). Vulkan was a hero to the people and the adopted son of a prominent leader. Manus I actually don't know much about.

Corax, in contrast to all of them, was raised by prisoner/slaves and had to fight for his people's freedom.

As I got more into Raven Guard lore I was also drawn to Shrike. His attitude of "Screw you guys and your war, I'm going to go help the people you ABANDONED instead." really spoke to me.

And I've always had an affinity for characters that use stealth and guile to achieve their goals over brute strength.

Well... I think first time I saw a wargame for first time was an old magazine that GW gave free... you know... that old magazine talking about Warhammer Sixth Ed and W40k maybe Third or Forth Ed, with Black Templars vs Dark Eldars...

You should also add this two amazing covers:

I think it should be around 2000-2002... so I should be 10-12yo... then in 2005 I saw the BT's codex... and I fell in love.
Maybe that fanatical spirit, the most important thing is the duty, no matter the odds...

Now, I'm 27yo and maybe Guilliman's style seems more logical, but still loving the Sons of Dorn spirit... sacrifice, zeal, duty... Their ideology over any odds, doesnt matter the casualties... resist and continue fighting...

Over the years I've been drawn to a lot of Chapters at one point or other but, like a few of my fellow frater, couldn't bring myself to settle on any particular one. For that reason I've always been attracted to the 'little guys' in the shadows that GW rarely (if ever) shine a light on. That in turn led to DIY Chapters, where I could mold them along whatever path I fancied travelling down.

@deathspectresgt7 - 117 squads? You are truely touched by the Emperor's grace!

Minotaurs for me.

a few reasons:

- the trigger was Asterion Moloc model, the Hoplite look, best model ever :)

- then ForgeWorld provides 3 HQ named model, which was important to me. In terms of being able to customize the army beyond the regular space marines model (rule of cool) and efficiency (lot of others factions have monstrous stuff to deal with and I feel a random chapter with just a normal captain as warlord might struggle...)

- easiness to paint : my other army is Thousand Sons, which is very long/difficult to paint, so I like to have a SM army which is easier. Easier because metallic armor.

- cool look: I like the bronze color, and the minotaur head icon look fantastic

Those 2 artworks had a lot to do with my 40k experiance starting back in around 2000. Love em.

My first favourite canon Chapter is the Space Wolves. Back when every Chapter had the exact identical profiles, weapons etc, they stood out due to their grey armour and their Chapter symbol. They've changed a hell of a lot in thirty plus years, and whilst the Wolf/Viking aspect has gotten rather...heavy, they're still my favourite. That and the fact there was a Leman Russ model (That I still have, although Freki and Geri were lost to the warp :( )

Other than that, some other favourites of mine are those from the Rogue Trader years. Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Salamanders, Iron Hands, Silver Skulls, Red Scorpions, The Mentor Legion, Ultramarines, Blood Drinkers, Flesh Tearers, Flesh Eaters, Crimson Fists and of course Rainbow Warriors ;)

For some reason, I've always found cyborgs interesting since I was young, especially the kind where the machine parts are overtly non-human. These idiots from the shortlived Centurions cartoon are an example of the type:

Anyway, that's why I like the Iron Hands (and the Adeptus Mechanicus).

As soon as I saw the cover of the 4th edition Black Templar Codex, I was in smitten. As soon as I started reading about the Teutonic Knights in spaaaaaace lead by a Champion of Divine Providence wielding a Black Blade I was fully in love. I have 4 Emperors Champion models now, one old and one new modeled as they are supposed to be, one acting as a Company Champion with Thunder Hammer, and one that has a bit of a kitbash, but traditional gear.

I did some research, learnt that the Ultramarines are the best in every way, and thusly they secured my loyalty.

In all seriousness, Rome is my favourite of the ancient civilisations. The Ultramarines borrow from Roman mythology and I respect their professional approach to war and, under leadership from Guilliman, their goal of making like better and more fair for all Imperium citizens.
