I have been planning to get into 30k for a long time now. The day still hasn't come, but it keeps getting closer, and I like to have it all planned out.

I think my main legion will be Alpha Legion (primarily mostly Infantry/Elites oriented, we shall see about the vehicles), but I have so many legions I'd like to do, that sooner or later time shall come for me to include allies/eventually start new one.

For now I thought about something  fast&stabby, to aid my AL. As much as Dg/IWs/Mechanicum are very strong pretenders for 2nd favourite armies, they go out of equasion for now. And I'm mostly a fan of Traitor legions, especially that traitor IHs are fishy idea, and Scars have no stuff out yet. Also, no named characters, unless someone is really good. Exodus and Skorr are already much for me.

So I'm looking for something not idiotically expensive, relying on assault (with or without jumppacks, gonna magnetize them) marines, there can be some termis, but not much (I'm going to have abouta 20 in my AL already, 10 lernaean included)

For now The options and drawbacks  I see are:

WEs:

Pros:

+9/10 paintscheme

+ great CC

+I hear Butchers are good

Cons:

-My favourite rampagers is a joke

-Does the theme really fit AL?

SoH:

Pros:

+Good paintscheme

+fluff matches

+Reivers

Cons:

???

Night Lords:

Pros:

+gameplaywise, quite fitting, fluff on the combo is good too

Cons:

-require me to pay for huge squads

-/+Don't like FW conversion sets, would take me lots of converting

- Second blue legion...

And there're also WBs, which have great aesthetics and fluff, I could even start their army standalone, but currently am not in mood for daemons, and daemons running arm to arm with AL looks weird to me.

There's also other option: not starting new legion at all, maybe AL can pull it out well enough too.

As you can see my knowledge is pretty shallow on the topic, so I humbly ask you for suggestions&info on that issue. Thanks in advance.

Traitor XIXth Legion? Old Ashen Claws who follow Horus over Corvus could work (bit iffy for fluff but the possibility is certainly there - a large chunk of the old guard was effectively exiled early on in Corvus' tenure). Edited by bluntblade
What about Emperor's Children? Fast and stabby certainly sounds like them (palatine blades with jump-packs, assault squads, even outrider bikes would be thematic). Also, if I recall correctly, they have bonuses to running distances and combat resolution (although it might be through special characters, not sure on that one).

Just a word on the WE: the World Eaters and Alpha Legion are the lowest level of allies on the allies matrix (By The Emperor's/Warmaster's Command), so there are negative effects for having them too close together on the battlefield.

I'd warn against the Emperor's Children from a rules perspective (even though they're my favourite Legion). They have a one of the weaker sets of rules and their specialist units are both over costed and fragile.

Sons of Horus would definitely make sense from a fluff perspective.

Personally I'd go with the Night Lords. I can definitely see them working together with the Alpha Legion from a fluff perspective and they have (in my opinion) excellent Legion rules. You don't have to use the Forgeworld conversion sets...

Ouldnt mutable tactics allow him to take any legion unit and make them Alpha Legion, so he could get a really decent assault unit that way without penalties?

Yes, and no.It is not mutable tactic thing, but our RoW. Which basically forces me to choose infiltrate from MTs, take praetor, limits me to one consul, no allies, no fortifications, and makes me take one another Compulsory Troop . It is still good, and it usually is way to go, but it has some severe repercussions, for one Stolen unit, and bonus to initiative seizing.

The more I think about it, the better option NLs seem. How is their RoW? The one that forces you to take 3x Terrors (which due to nature of the legion, should be at least 10 men each)? Also I know I don't have to use it, thus I said I'd have to go for conversions.

I don't think I am really that into RG to be honest. And AL has enough beakies on its own.

Neither have I ever been a fan of EC.

Night Lords are very stabby, problem is you really want their rite of war to make the most of it, Terror Assault letting you take Terror Squads as troops. But this then means you'll probably be night fighting on the first turn which limits your own shooting and Alphastrike that infiltrate would give you.

While Coils of the Hydra means an extra troops choice and limits you a touch, it does also mean you don't need to buy an entire other detachment (with perhaps another expensive master of the legion for a different RoW) to run a unique unit from a different legion as really, other than World Eaters, no ones basic units are that good.

I'm not a fan of the Terror Assault RoW. Terror squads are basically veterans who get fear instead of any of the usual veteran tactics and can't take melta bombs - not nearly as versatile (especially against tanks), which is a serious problem if you're compelled take three full squads of them. For Night Lords used as a full army I'd rather use Sacrificial Offering or the one that lets you deep strike Assault Marines. As allies, I'm not sure I'd run a Rite of War.

Thousand Sons? Like the Alpha Legion, they look good when painted with a clear color over metallic.

I'd still consider White Scars, even if they don't have special units. They do have legion-specific heads and torsos. Take Outriders and Attack Bikes (jetbikes are shooty, not what you're looking for). The Outrider sergeant should take a power glaive, which is a fantastic weapon, and 1 in 3 Outriders can take a power weapon (I like axes). Attack Bikes are fun with a character attached; they don't have any power weapons of their own, but they do have a lot of attacks and can be great against tanks since they can take multimeltas and meltabombs.

Keep in mind that you only have to take 2 Terror Squads to run Terror Assault in an allied detachment. They can also take Dreadclaws as dedicated transports! Not something to overlook. The limitation to 1 Heavy Support and 1 Consul don't matter at all in the allied detachment, either.

You could also use an Alpha Legion Master of Signal's Cognis Signum to grant Night Vision to a select unit in the Alpha Legion detachment that you want shooting on the first turn. But otherwise, yeah, it could be a bit of a hindrance. If you ever find opponents willing to let you, you could run Alpha Legion/Night Lords with the book 6 Shattered Legion rules, use an Alpha Legion HQ as your Warlord, and overcome Martial Hubris while also gaining Night Vision. If they're not OK, just go back to running the NL as allies?

Both the ideas carlisimo suggests above, Thousand Sons and Traitor(?) White Scars, could be really awesome directions to go, too. Always love seeing traitor Raven Guard suggestions too, although I've always felt they'd make the most sense alongside Sons of Horus...
