Roma
Hi all, I havent played any 8th at all and amn't on top of the changes in terms of books and rules that rolled around since 7th ended. Looking for an excuse to finish painting more models, can anyone help me pick a marine codex to use? Background: I play cheaply, my collection is mostly just stock marine and terminator units from the boxed sets I bought in bulk. I used to use all kinds of cheese and sheannanigans to actually make playable lists. The main focus being mobility without buying pricy vehicles I used tricks like: -Deathstars with gate of infinity or telekenises psykers to move 12", have 3+ invuls etc using inquisition as allies and so on. -Space wolves using the outflank upgrade on a bunch of HQ's. -Using bastions with the escape hatch for an early 18" move. -Blood angels with astorath allowing to take an army of death company. They could take jetpacks with bolters so one could have a very mobile list by just modelling jump packs onto stock marines. So yeah you get the idea. Anyone have suggestions on how to best turn a collection of 50 marines, 10 terminators, some random bikes and any HQ's (modelling) into a reasonably mobile and effective force? Please be as detailed as you can as I've no idea atm how allies or strategems and all this new stuff im seeing works. Ive noticed psykers can now pick powers (amen) and warp speed looks quite useful, so heretics is my initial gut feeling but im open to all marine suggestions (except grey knights, too unique models). Alpha legion have a useful looking unit placement strategem to set up 9" away. Thanks for any tips. Aothaine
You have a lot to catch up on. My suggestion is to go watch a few reviews first on 8th edition and when it released, watch a few batreps then start to watch some codex reviews. Tabletop Tactics has all of this in one channel. They are a real happy bunch of Brits that go all out on making good content and following the rules. Deciding on which army/list to play is going to be a rough one. Though if you are looking to play with mostly infantry, Chaos Space Marines, Ultra Marines or Raven Guard might be decent options for you. Melete
I think Raven Guard or Alpha Legion would be a good fit. Raven Guard are mostly shooting focused because the SM codex isn't very good for assault armies this edition. Alpha Legion is more balanced, with both good shooting units and good assault units. For your models, though, Raven Guard is probably a better fit, as the best units in an Alpha Legion force are Cultists and Berserkers; regular Chaos Space Marines are pretty mediocre, you might see some Havocs but not a lot of CSM squads. Space Wolves can still do a bit of outflanking, but we don't have a codex yet. It probably won't arrive until May at the earliest. We'll have a better idea of how they work once that book is out. My particular favorite are the Raven Guard successor Raptors chapter, whose Chapter Master Lias Issodon (Forgeworld character) can deploy three infantry squads along with himself in an ambush. They still get all the basic Raven Guard rules and stratagems, except for their relic. ONDIG
Paint em all red w black trim sprinkle in some choice chaos bits and call them Exorcists! Exorcists USED to be able to choose the tactics of any Codex chapter . NatBrannigan
Space Wolves are super flexible as far as Infantry goes, and they'll be getting a codex (maybe a Primarch?) fairly soon. Certain units get things moving quickly and Grey Hunters and ok at just about everything. That being said I'm concerned that GW will dial up the Wolfness to 13 with a giant Were-Leman Russ and the models that get infantry moving faster are hideous! Also far to wolf wolf wolf for my tastes. Raven Guard are just flat out cool, pretty sure they all wear Aviators under those glorious beaked helmets...
