Early crusade White Scars - Spoilers from Jaghatai Khan

So, still reading the book but I was surprised that the early White Scars were called the Star Hunters. The name even survived for a few years after Jaghatai was given his legion. Forge World's fancy legion info plate was calling them the Sons of Thule, but have to admit Star Hunters is way cooler. And AFAIK, this is entirely new - or at least I can't think of any previous references to Star Hunters.

The only visual difference seems to be ivory and gold armor, with no hint of red other than for cloaks.

Sounds intriguing. Still going to be a few months before I get to this, but with Chris Wraight  writing it, I dare say this could be the best of the Primarch books thus far. I'm really looking forward to it..... may have to break discipline and jump ahead on this one:wink:

There seems to be a bit of disconnect sometimes. The Dragon Warriors -> Salamanders vs "No cognomen" but they used the Saturnyne Ram as iconography thing is similar here. I imagine most of the legions just had a bunch of cognomens, as it's easier to swallow than one source isn't canon, or there has been such a swift retcon.

Star Hunters is great though. I like it a lot better than Sons of Thule, but there is certainly room for both in this universe.

Hi I didn't know there was a primarch novel on Jagatai Khan out already. OOH, Chris Wright as well. Hope this will be good. Don't see it in my GW stores last night though.

The limited edition one is out, atm. The standard one will be out in 3 months (I think it's 3 months between the LE and standard release for the Primarch books).

Star Hunters.... What a stupid name. :biggrin.:

Good name for a 80s hairmetal band though.

Not the worst name, or rather not any worse than "White Scars". Actually it reminded me of the old Wing Commander series or an old eighties "side scroll/top scroll fighting"  game like 1942 or Contra.

Definitely better than Imperial Heralds (word bearers,... actually word bearers suck too but I'm biased against them)

Yeah, pretty much.

In my opinion every name which strides away to far from sounding like a Power Metal band is kind of strange and/or lame. ;)

LOL, you should try delve into 80s culture a bit more to appreciate the cultural treasures of the time. Like when Michael Jackson was still black, and Bon Jo Vi's hair was bigger than his head. Not to mention Back to the Future and Star Wars.

I love every single word after 'like'. ;)
Thanks for sharing that little nugget of info. I agree though that most legions probably had multiple nicknames. I've been doing this twenty years and still have a little trouble with some of the Legion numbering. I'm sure it got annoying for Imperial Army grunts too.

Star Hunters is Space Wolves level 80's, but I'm not criticizing. The layman comes up with simple names for things (Walkie-Talkie, for example). I can easily see some auxilia commander complaining about the early Scars dragging them across a sector hunting for an enemy commander.

Also bear in mind GW started with a few guys doing mail order out of a flat. I'm not sure who are the original founders nor their educational level at the time, but if I'm to guess, most of their knowledge would be from encyclopedias and other general knowledge magazines, the most famous being National Geographic or maybe Reader's Digest. Also this being somewhat Post-Cold War, most of this stuff would be strictly from a Western perspective without any input or different perspectives, so we would treat what we read as what it is, unlike today where we constantly question most of our "normal knowledge", like whether Mongolians do close combat etc.

Point being, can't blame the original guys and white dwarf writers for being simplistic in their description. Not to mention as times change to the 21st millenium, a lot of the old fluff becomes harder and harder to justify and a lot of revisions has to be done for plot and characters. Some of which have been detrimental (like the noble bright salamanders and their primarch being hit with weirdness in their plot) to Jagatai and Russ whose stories have greatly embelished and expanded their once one dimensional characters.

Right, guess only the limited edition is out yet. Finished it, fun book. I can only compare with the Magnus one which in comparison feels disappointing. Magnus was just Yet More of The Same, but Jaghatai does a good job at keeping the bolter porn limited and focusing more on the legion's evolution from the Star Hunters (80's metal as hell) to the White Scars.
