A Gentleman's Coup
Hello all. I have been getting back into Guard recently and I was thinking about building a Praetorian/Anglo-Zulu/Anglo-Boer War style guard army. My biggest roadblock so far, though, has been deciding which doctrine would be most appropriate. Cadians for discipline and fire? Mordians for stoicism and volley fire? Vostroyans for range and accuracy? I can't really figure out which one would work the best. What do you guys think? Any suggestions? Ranulf
Personally I'd go with Mordian as it's the most thematic for the Praetorian regiment - ranks of troops in base-to-base contact with improved leadership, effective overwatch and FRFSRF orders from their officers. It's a top-hole match-up old boy. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/345860-praetorian-guard-doctrine/#findComment-5046746 Share on other sites
Ranulf
As an aside - here's a plug for Victoria Miniatures in case you're considering how to represent Praetorians/Mordians: Firing-line Squads Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/345860-praetorian-guard-doctrine/#findComment-5046757 Share on other sites
duz_
As a Mordian player I think Mordian or Vostroyan work the best. The argument for Vostroyan being they're such good aim they can shoot longer distance. ;) All are great RDs. Personally I really like the Mordian one. I've used it to great effect since the codex dropped. Ulrik_Ironfist
The Mordian RD is probably the best. Since there are tons of ways to get rerolls, but not many to get +1 to hit. BS3+ guardsmen are vicious, especially if they’re rerolling 1’s. The Cadian doctrine favors gun lines and artillery. Which is why I make heavy use of Stormies. If you take a Mordian Malcador Defender, stick another vehicle near it to get the Overwatch bonus, then pop the defensive gunners stratagem, it will overwatch on 3s... duz_
It is amusing whatching your opponents face when they charge a Punisher that turns around and effectively shoots overwatch at full BS (4+) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/345860-praetorian-guard-doctrine/#findComment-5048423 Share on other sites
NatBrannigan
the Mordian overwatch bonus is a really underrated thing in my opinion. Suddenly those heavy and special weapons that are getting charged are actually hitting something and the tanks are downright filthy if they get charged (and mine invariably do...) For Praetorians it's a great match because you need to be in ranks. Now granted you can just use any doctrine and keep your chaps in ranks but somehow it's more satisfying if you get an in-game benefit as well. The LD bonus making your standard infantry braver than space Marines is also great. Very British Redcoat. "Get back in rank Perkins!" "But I've lost me arm sarge..." "You've got a spare haven't you?" ImperialSquishiness
You can make them have a leadership higher than an inquisitor/Commissar. Use their leadership if in bubble. +1 for being in Base to Base and +1 for a banner Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/345860-praetorian-guard-doctrine/#findComment-5048525 Share on other sites
NatBrannigan
My Regimental colours have certainly found themselves off the shelf and on the table recently, for more than just decorative reasons. I do find myself keeping them safe and then losing the objectives though! A Moral victory. Ulrik_Ironfist
I really love how IG looks like poop on paper, but turns dirty when they take to the field. Banners and orders and vox casters make the army work together in a way that no other 40k army does. NatBrannigan
Ssh! Don't mention that our orders are good! The Marine players will try and make them cost command points! It does Irk me that people are saying all other armies have had their unique abilities moved to strategems except Guard, people really have it in for us and our codex was only good compared to other armies index lists. Orders are just our way of getting re-rolls to hit and wound etc. If only Space Marines had an easy way to have their troops re-roll hits and wounds without using strategems, something using characters maybe.......? Anywho, you're right about Guard working together in a way no other army really does. Comes from not having any super powerful units outside of LOW slots. great fun to play.
