Vostroyan Order

So I was just rereading rules today and realized something. And then had a ‘that cannot be right”. The Vostroyan Order in essence allows you shoot while in melee combat. Cool. Niche. But okay.

Then I read the order it first “you may shoot guns even if you are within 1 of the enemy. If you do so you must target units within 1” even if friendlies are also within 1”. So the while second (Well third) reread I think my ‘awesome’ realization was incorrect. But just to ask and see other folks think.

If the order is issue and received. And there is not an enemy unit within 1”. Can they I then target an enemy unit that is in 1” of one of my other units? My gut and brain on reread says nay.

The “even if enemy....” only applies if you are shooting an enemy within 1” not any time the squad would shoot.

It sounds essentially as though your unit receiving the order is enabled to use any of its ranged weapons in melee as if they were pistols. The exemption allowing you to shoot at an enemy unit even if there are friendly units within 1” is also given in the rules for Pistols.

To answer your question: no, I think this order only works if the receiving unit is within 1” of an enemy unit.

So this says "If you do so..."  This is a conditional statement, so whatever follows is only valid if the preceding conditions are met.  In this case, that would be firing out of a combat.  So, as plasmablasts says, this simply allows them to fire as if they were pistols.
