Custodians with Spear or Axe?

Recommended Posts

While building my Custodes force I equipped everything which could handle an castellan axe with said axe.

(To be honest wounding Adeptus Astartes on 2 was pretty convincing aswell.)

After quite a few games and my troop Custodian Guard performed pretty well I took a clooser look and kinda came to the conclusion that the guardian spear is enough of a meele weapon to be awesome.

My point is that the guardian spear brings your guys to strength 6 in meele, with -3 ap for 2 points less than a castellan axe.

You don't wound as easy, but your opponent doesn't save "as easy" and is most likely to use his invul save aswell.

Am I praising the guardian spears too much or is somebody else also thinking about armore penetration being better than higher strength?

Without having to spend the cp on castellan strike.

Yeah, I was watching a batrep recently. 5 Wardens made it into combat with a Lord of Change... But were equipped with spears and only did a few wounds because they were wounding on 5s. They'd likely have killed it in one turn if they had the Axes.

Which channel was it if you don't mind me asking ?

Custodians can’t take axes btw guys lol. Only wardens and allarus. Otherwise yea. 2 point difference. But sometimes that -2 vs -3. Makes a difference.

I think everyone knows that.

Sorry. Must have misunderstood. The title of the thread is custodians with spear or axe. And OPs opening comments seem to imply he was using custodians with spears over axes. Sorry.

Everyone from the Codex is a "Custodian", be it Custodian Guard, Custodian Warden, Allarus Custodians and so on.

Spears for me.  They're cheaper and I always save CP for +1W, which works out better on anything T6 or below, and on par with Axes for T8/7 (if the Axes use 1 CP for +1AP.  But the Axe strat is additionally limited by numbers, where as the Spear one isn't).

I stick Axes on Characters, where I'm unlikely to want to spend CP on a single model.

You put spears on Wardens and Allarus?

Even spending 1 CP to be effective is not worth it with this army, in my opinion. Axes always wound Marines on a 2+, most vehicles on a 3+ and even t8 enemies on a 4+ without any required bonuses.

Obv Custodian Guard are stuck with spears, but everyone else should be taking Axes.

Yea. I agree. But it’s hard to take voice of spear vs axe purely in isolation cause it costs you more to take the models where axe is a choice. So between a larger number of models and spears and a smaller number of models and axes, maybe it all comes out even.
I would submit that Custodes should have a new unit that can take a new Cawl invention called the Salvo-Spax. Thus combining both weapons, and including a Salvo launcher firing mode solving several issues at once while giving us a new model variant. :tu:
