Custodes allies....that is not guard?

Hi everyone...recently i bought some custodes units but i personally would love to use another faction as allies for CP and bodies...but...as my brother plays guard i want something else..

- have you guys tried using other faction (s) as allies? Who and to what effect? What units and detachments did you use?

As of now...I am really close to picking admech as I love the models and think they add alot to the Custode's force!

With admech specificly...rangers or vanguard?..and what about dunecrawlers for that sweet range tank-killing power?

These armies are really new to me so all help will be greatly appriciated!

With guard vs admech.

Guard - more bodies (more guns generally), faster (move move move), and has access to indirect fire

Admech - higher chance to hit (better bs), more durable (mostly)

Personally, the indirect fire piece is enough to sell using guard over admech, but your mileage may vary.

Dunecrawlers are a very solid tank but, as has already been said, AdMech get expensive quickly when you start adding in heavy support which will limit the Custodes you can field.

Cheaper version of AdMech is to use msu rangers with a transuranic arquebus. Plonk then in cover for a good save and snipe with the arquebus, it’s a pretty decent long range weapon and can target characters. They’ll give you some screens and deep strike denial but they won’t hold up well if your opponent focuses them.

The advantage of admech is that they bring a lot to the table for relatively few points. My admech battalion looks something like:

2 techpriests

3x5 rangers with an arquebus each

Neutron dunecrawler

All from stygies meaning theyre at -1 to hit by anything more than 12 away. They sit back picking off vehicles and characters with the arquebus. The dunecrawlers double up really well, buffing their invuls.

The downside is that the techpriests are fairly irrelevent, so are just a 90 point tax. If youre taking two crawlers Id cough up the points for the dominus to give them the rerolls.

With a good table of LoS blocking terrain a good opponent will neutralize your dunecrawlsrs for at least a few turns. And all the their non vehicle shooting Custodes has in spades in hurricane bolters. The indirect fire these days in guard artillery is just too good. And character sniping is definitely not as big a deal as everyone thinks it is.

Space marines could work. I ran a list for a while with drop plasma Inceptors for vehicle hunting. But again. Lots of points in an army that needs to save points for Custodes. At the end of the day Custodes is probably the most expensive army points wise so needs cheap allies

Majority of tables don't have enough LoS blocking terrain even at tournaments in my experience, if there is good LoS blocking terrain then the prime targets for your dunecrawlers won't be able to hit you back either, and of course your dunecrawlers ignore pentalies for moving with heavy weapons. So I maintain 2 with a dominus and 3 cheap squads to screen is a good addition to the Custodes.

All of the larger tournaments I have been to have had plenty of LoS terrain. It is quite easy to make the NOVA style Ls (something one of my local stores has adopted) to contribute to your local stores terrain.

I would love some comments on this list...you think it is atleast decent? As guard is a nono for me to ally!

I would add a Vexilus Praetor w/ Magnifica (-1 hit) in order to protect your guard units from a turn 1 slaughter. I'm also considering adding another with the +1 attack banner in Allarus armor, that gives him the option of keeping him in deep strike reserve, he can also be equipped with one of the "decent" relics for high toughness / wound targets.

Please keep in mind that my advice is only based on a few games thus far with my Custodes, and I'm not liable if it's terrible :)

For your Guardian squads, as much as i was gung ho about spears, I'm finding the extra point of invulnerable save makes my one unit of 3 sentinels incredibly hard to shift. Maybe I'm just rolling a lot of 3s, but I've really started to appreciate them, especially if near a -1 to hit banner.

I'll also second that your guardians could use something to give them an edge. Either the Vexilla Magnifica for an edge in survivability, or a Shield Captain to accompany some of them for those sweet sweet rerolls. Otherwise it seems like they're just a battalion tax, but what a high tax they are.

I'm checking out playing AdMech with my Custodes.  They probably aren't as good overall as the Guard but they bring some different stuff to the table.  Transuranic Arquebus shots seem quite good, so 3 units of 5 Rangers packing those make for a decent fire support package for a pretty modest cost (by Custodian standards anyway!).  I also decided to take a trio of Dunecrawlers with Neutron Lasers for anti-tank/big stuff.

Sisters of Battle.

Battle Sisters w/stormbolters are cheap 51pts. Cheap battalion would be:

Cannoness

Cannoness

3x 5 BSS with 3x stormbolters

Swap out a cannoness for Celestine and you have a solid little battalion. Celestine works great with the Custodes bikers. Both are mega fast.

Cheers

After getting toasted in every game I've played with stand-alone Custodes, I'm thinking I also need some objective campers and firepower. I could use my Guard but it seems boring, so I'm thinking my "sisters" may get tagged in next week. They just seem that they'll maybe hit hard enough that they'll contribute to the battle without being the guard you see everywhere.
