Watchers of the Throne

Recommended Posts

I enjoyed it a whole lot, lots of cool insight into the politics and thinking of Sisters and Custodes and some High Lords, does get a bit too Bolter Porn at the end but its a 40k novel after all!

Master of Mankind is another great read after this one, though a bit dated i think compared to Custodes wargear vs what FW gave them for rules

MoM was a great read, but I think I liked Watchers even better. The SoS character was the best IMO and made me a huge fan of the Anathema Psykana. I sure hope GW has plans to flesh them out w Inquisition so they can take their rightful place on the battlefield with Custodes as their psychic protection. They are so limited currently as a faction. Especially with no HQs. Would love FW to add Jenetia Krole to their HH character series. They just did Valdor, so maybe she'll be up soon.

I own Carrion Throne but havent read it yet because someone said the Custodes actually feature very little in the book.

Darn guys... you're killing me here. Guess I'm picking that one up too.

Carrion Throne is a good read, a very cool look at how everyday Terra feels, and the every day element of weeding out the seedy underbelly by Inquisition. I'm not finished it, but again I picked it up for the Custodes which have still not made an appearance.

If you guys really think that book is better than MoM... I dunno. I guess I have to read it though.

Don't get me wrong, Master of Mankind was brilliiant, and may be a better written book than Watchers (debatable), but I thoroughly enjoyed Watchers from beginning to end.  The SoS character steals the show IMO, even though Trajan Valoris and the other Custodes characters are great.  Definite must read for any fans of Custodes or SoS, or the Khorne invasion of Terra immediately when the universe split open.

So this o e takes place at the onset of the Cicatrix Maledictum? Any mention of Guilliman?

I will say one of my favourite aspects of MoM was the candid interactions between the Emperor and the main Custodes character, and I know that cannot be a component of this book considering the time line.

Basically, the book is about the events on Terra of the leadup to the Cicatrix Maladictum, including both the arrival of Guilliman and the planning of the Indomitus Crusade. It's a sister-piece to Carrion Throne (even sharing a character), showing the workings of the Imperial Senate and Custodes, along with the return of the Sisters of Silence.

It may not have the Emperor and Custodes interacting, but it does show how the Custodes have spent the last few millennia, and how the Imperium is led.

It's a good book, not quite a great one.

I don't like the continuel jumping between characters and artificial suspense, I also think there's a few too many/too long battle scenes in what is effectively a political story about the Throne World.

The characters, general insight into the high Lords and overall story are really good however.

Actually, I liked the jumping. Having a book told entirely from the point of view of Sister "I hate absolutely everything, everyone ever all the time" Aleya would quickly grate, and there aren't really that many battles, just the story of Aleya returning, the already-established Siege, and the events of the end of the story.

I would really love to see the story continued though, showing Tieron helping oversee the organization and progression of the Indomitus Crusade.

Really though, I love that it actually shows the High Lords as competent, rather than the usual stereotypes of them being doddering buffoons who have no idea what they're doing, watching the Imperium collapse around them.
