Another ETL question!

Recommended Posts

It depends on what you yourself consider for your models to mean "completed". You have to "complete" your models to your satisfaction (quality is encouraged) but if you never do bases that's fine as well.

At least as far as I know. ^^

This was my understanding too; your models are finished when you consider them to be, so if you don't base your models normally then you don't need to just to satisfy ETL (same goes for decals, varnish etc)

You will need to look at prior ETL rules to get the exact language. Not sure if Captain Semper has posted that part for this year.

SfPanzer is correct in how bases have been handled, if you paint bases as part of finishing model then the intent is that you do that. If you don’t do bases at the same time then you don’t have to paint the base. As an example, I sometime wait on bases until the majority of the army is done should I can do them once for consistency.

It’s an honor system.

Yeah for me bases are a novelty. I do agree that armies only look really finished once you've done the bases but I usually only do them once I've several units table ready. Considering that my planned bases are about as much work as the model itself and I still have to practice the technique I want to use I'll probably just do a very plain basejob for the ETL just to not have it completely empty.

And suddenly, I have rendered this question irrelevant to myself :wacko.:

I've just decided to take part in a challenge hosted by my local 40k store while doing the ETL anyway and they require the bases to be painted.

Which sucks for me because I wanted to wait 'til I had worked out a theme for all my models as well but hey, it ain't like superglue is unbreakable or anything...

Yes, the idea is that if you possess the skill to do bases you should. If you don’t possess the skill and you don’t do bases, you’ll not be excluded from the ETL because of that. But, nowadays with the texture paints available, it’s dead easy to do at least some basic basing...

Well, I'll need to whip up something quick 'til Thursday evening - that's when the first model for the store is due.

I'll improvise a base with what I've got (It will most likely be a piece of debris in the desert. I've got some sand colored paint and a few pieces of debris from the Aggressor Squad sprue left. Ain't I inventive?), but then, I'll need to look around for a style I can settle on.

Or magnetize the bases for the new models.
