HighMarshalAmp
5 man Dev Squad, 4 heavy weapons. 5 Sniper Scouts in the backfield, 2 MSU Tac Squads moving towards the front. Do the Devs get Plasma, Melta or Grav? Or do they split up into two 5 man squads with 2 heavy weapons each? Tbh two 5 man squads with 2 Multi-Meltas each to heat up the front while the Tac Squads move into rapid fire range at most are what I'd favor right now, but I've never gone for heavy weapons before so please help me decide what to paint! Tokugawa
Under 8th melta were significantly nerfed, many players put 0 meltagun on their infantry units. Also models in the same unit could shoot different target now, so you could see 2 lascannon + 2 other HW recommended frequently. MARK0SIAN
I have had great success with all grav cannons this edition. They have a good number of shots (4) and great AP, plus their damage increases to d3 if the target has a 3+ save or better. It makes them the best MEQ killers of the dev weapons and can even shave off a surprising number of wounds from vehicles thanks to the number of shots and good AP. Dracos
Too are many other variables to give an informed decision. - Chapter Tactics - HQ support - Similar mission achieving units Instinctively, I prefer MSU myself so two MM in a 5 man squad that SftS or travels via Razorback seems effective. Although I'd really prefer 3 anti-tank with 2 boltguns (3 if I were doing the latter). Dark_Jober
For Devs if your options are only Plasma, Melta or Grav, I will say Grav. Plasma Devs IMO are worse than Hellblasters, because they are D3 shots and Heavy. Hellblasters can move and shoot with no penalties, they are also more resilent. Multimelta could be nice in a drop pod or SftS, but still a suicide squad. Grav seems nice. Good firepower and weight of fire, the only problem is that they are medium range (24" I think) so they are more exposed. I think you should add one Missile Launcher or Heavy Bolter for using the Stratagems and Cherub synergy, in plasma or grav squads. For tactical squads I think the best is Plas/CombiPlas. I will only use meltagun if I m running BT in hordes. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/346673-dev-squad-advice/#findComment-5067079 Share on other sites
HighMarshalAmp
In the army in question, there will be a Lieutenant with Power Sword and MCB, a Captain with Power Sword (to be replaced by the Burning Blade if that's the name of that relic... you know which one I mean. Sorry.) and MCB, a Company Ancient with a Power Sword, a Company Champion with his MCPS and a Bolt Pistol and finally a squad of Company Veterans, probably with Combi-Gravs and Power Swords. They'll be facing MEQ Infantry - and only infantry - 99% of the time (gotta love the local meta). Chapter Tactics will be Iron Hands or Raven Guard. MARK0SIAN
If you’re facing a lot of infantry then Imperial Fists might be a good chapter tactic too as it removes their cover. Also if you’re only facing infantry then definitely grav. Even if everything goes perfectly, melta will only kill 4 guys whereas I have used grav cannons with a chapter master and lt nearby to wipe out entire 10 man squads of marines in a single volley. HighMarshalAmp
With all your recommendations and the realization that Grav Canons are Heavy 4 (Sweet!), I'll indeed go with Grav. For now, I'm gonna paint up two of them to add to the Tac Squads (I'd do three but there's still the Scouts I wanna do.) The first part of this army is gonna be my ETL project with the Lt starting it off next week. Ancient and Champion are done already bar the arm holding the flag - that arm is still only basecoated. Flag's done though. So thank you for your advice! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/346673-dev-squad-advice/#findComment-5067192 Share on other sites
Dracos
Mmmmm .... Grav-weapons. I would love to see the next Primaris heavy weapon option be an Infantry squad with these. Let us know how they play for you on the table :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/346673-dev-squad-advice/#findComment-5067328 Share on other sites
HighMarshalAmp
I would love to see Primaris Marines assume the same modularity that 'Oldmarines' have... the single model characters aside, I can put every weapon from every box on every body which I can then put on any pair of legs and pose it as I see fit. I miss that in other armies and I miss it in Primaris models. The Grav Cannons? Oh, they won't play for me on the table in any way most of the time - it's not my army exactly.
