TiguriusX
Been busy with life and haven't played since my escalation league ended. Today I have my blood angel friend coming over for a practice game while our kids have a play date. Goal is to prep for a team tournament (2 detachments) Each player gets 1K points Tournament rule is teams roll off and winner picks their target on the other team. No units or stratagems or anything else will effect the "team" Once games are set you are 1v1 with your opponent in an ITC format The must have for any SW army is Bjorn....I have been trying to think of other things to give him I am debating the Relic Leviathan as well....but it will seriously hinder my ability to play objectives Here are the lists I'm debating Option 1 Bjorn hero hammer ++ Outrider Detachment +1CP (Imperium - Space Wolves) +++ HQ +Wolf Guard Battle Leader: Frag & Krak grenades, Jump Packs, Power fist, Storm shield+ Fast Attack +Cyberwolves. I march my relic and bjorn into their face and if might of heroes goes off they have to shoot at the T9 relic leviathan The glaring weakness here is no bodies for taking/holding objectives I also am vulnerable to a good assault army. TiguriusX
Got a 1K point practice game in. Decided to go with OPTION 5 listed above Bjorn, Relic Leviathan and the Assassins My friend had roughly the following Captain Smash 6 Sanguinary Guard (mix of swords and fists) Sanguinary Ancient (banner combo for FNP of 5+....was a PITA all game) 6 Inceptors with bolters 5 Veteran guard with SB and SS Lt Sniper scouts and Heavy bolter I think that was everything We rolled and got ITC Mission #6 We both choose the objective on our amazon box as priority Secondary missions Me: Old skool / Recon / Behind enemy lines Him: Old skool / Head hunter / Kingslayer (eversor assassin) We played on my dining room table which is slightly larger than 4x4 Fight at the farm house! I was hoping to have my FLG mat (bought it during their sale) but apparently everyone else bought too and it is seriously delayed. Hasn't even shipped yet. Instead I just tossed some random table cloth on top Terrain is random amazon boxes and a farm house toy from my kids I won the roll for deployment and chose dawn of war to get clear sight lines and use range to my advantage I also won the roll off and took turn 1 so I could fire away I deployed all my assassins in reserve and plopped my LF on the objective to defend. I then put my dread force on the other side to cover both fire lanes and prepared to advance and take his objective by force *Ignore the glass jar in front of my long fangs. The tape holding the box closed failed and the box popped open and sent my guys flying. I just put the jar on to weigh it down He placed his scout snipers in the farm house and his sanguinary guard in reserve Turn 1 My Leviathan advances and fires at inceptors 11 wounding hits 2 armor saves made A ton of FNP made (seriously hot dice to open...) Final result...4 dead inceptors and 2 remaining Bjorn put 2 wounds with helfrost on the scouts Scouts roll 5 and 6 to save LF-LC roll 2 hits but snake eyes on the wounds I got a bad feeling about my dice... First game with new rules after FAQ. Not having to work about deep strike is very relaxing! Turn over My streak of never killing a unit continues I score 1 point for objective T1 bottom He tries to hide from the relic and hugs the farm house (in the process he completely abandons his objective) Inceptors fire at relic leviathan 3 wounds but I make all 3 saves Company vets fire at LF 6 SB wounds 6 saves Scouts put 2 mortal wounds on Relic with their sniper rifles Scout with HB kills CW He gets first strike and pulls ahead on his secondary Turn 2 The death star is clearing the moon! I maneuver my Leviathan to fire on his forces but also keep in mind that his Sanguinary Guard can drop in this turn I keep Bjorn far enough behind to be safe Leviathan puts 16 wounds on Inceptors He saves all but 4 with armor and FNP By sheer numbers the squad dies I drop 1 culexus on his objective and the other on the opposite side of his deployment to get recon and BEL points going I manage 1 wound on his LT firing my animus Bjorn helfrosts 1 sniper scout My eversor arrives and has the scouts as his primary target (those mortal wounds freaked me out man!) I know he is the warlord and dying will cost me points but I hope to draw him away from defending his objective. Eversor shoots and kills 3 scouts leaving the HB only LF-LC kill 1 veteran (storm shield saves the others) The eversor decides to charge into vets instead 5 wounds only 1 gets through armor and FNP End of turn I am starting to score some points now and crossing off my secondary Turn 2 bottom He sends all his melee after my relic leviathan and drops his sanguinary guard nearby HB scout hits wolf but saves the wound He fires his hellfire pistol but fails to wound the relic (T8 is not easy for him) The eversor and veteran fight continues I kill off 2 more veterans and take no wounds in return On the other side of the map all his forces charge the relic Sanguinary guard fists do 3 wounds Swords do 7 wounds (needs 5 to wound with rerolls and got all 5) Captain smash finishes him off I used CP to get explosion and succeed Captain smash gets 3 MW Bjorn takes 1 Guard take 1 Sanguinary ancient takes 1 Well done leviathan...this proved to be critical moment for me and greatly tipped things in my favor At this point my friend does a very smart consolidation to bubble wrap his captain. Was something new to me and I wanted to highlight it. However, he is focused on fighting and seems to be completely ignoring the missions and objectives Turn 3 I need to clear his sanguinary guard but they are tough SOBs with 2 wounds and armor of 2+ Lucky for me they don't have an invulnerable save Bjorn gets into auto charge distance Culexus kills 1 sang guard who already had 1 wound LF-LC kill 2 more sanguinary guard and I have opened a crack in his bubble wrap Bjorn charges the captain and sanguinary guard and gets enough to go around and then consolidate into all of them Thanks to my new warlord trait of ferocious fighter I have A+1 (FAQ has removed my tenacity choice) I allocate 4 dice on captain and 2 on guard I manage to get 1 wound through his storm shield and roll 3 damage to kill the captain I only manage to kills 1 of his sanguinary guard but I am not afraid of his return attack and know I will live I have severely crippled his forces and am in firm control of the objectives. He concedes at this point And my favorite shot of the day from when he was packing up His travel container is just a giant box and it looks like a Blood Angel graveyard Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/346697-team-tournament-1k-may-prep/#findComment-5067844 Share on other sites

TiguriusX
Just got back from my first tournament ever. Phew...tiring but totally worth it and fun. My notes and details just took a nose dive in the last match. Lost my first match (to the eventual winner) and won the next two. Finished 2-1 and earned 3rd place overall individually. Will rest and recharge then do my batreps after I have more energy. TiguriusX
Game 1 v Dark Eldar ITC Mission 1 Dawn of war deployment Only special change is we played on a 6x4 cut in half (so 3x4) Secondary Old School Recon Behind enemy lines I'll try and get his actual list and edit it in later From memory 3 raiders ravager venom trueborn with ton of blasters kabalites with blasters 2 archons with shadowfield (2++special rule but a failure can't be rerolled and it is gone once that happens) In deployment he used a special stratagem to place his flyer in reserve. Neat trick guarantees I can't shoot it before it attacks. He shoves all his raiders and other stuff in the back corner behind cover to avoid my long range fire He won the roll off to go first He brings his flyer in at his back corner out of range of my leviathan (even if I walk still outside range) He maneuvers to use the buildings as cover and gets his raiders closer Firing phase he picks off 2 cyber wolves and the ravager takes 2 wounds off my leviathan I make a mental note to myself not to place CW in the open if possible they are easy to pick off (this is a big deal in game 2) My turn and I see some flaws in my army matchup. Dark eldar have insane mobility and firepower. My list can handle 1 of those but not both combined. The amount of dark lance and blasters is just insane and not what my dreads want to see. With that all going through my mind a make a major error in movement...I should focus on keeping both dreads alive until reinforcements arrive on turn 3. Instead I advance and get aggressive putting my units in harms way. In my shooting phase Bjorn fails to wound with his LC despite a CP reroll Leviathan puts 7 wounds on a raider I choose not to fire HK missiles and hope to unload them next round when I stand still (this is a mistake since I need first blood...I should always fire everything) Against most armies my prior movement would be fine...but the dark eldar zip across the map like it is nothing and put some tank killing guns right in my face. If I don't roll my 4++ saves well I can see this is basically game over. His side of the field is all clear just holding objectives The dark eldar open top is insane. In addition to these vehicles I have the unit firepower as well The mass of blasters start firing. I fail the fail an early leviathan invulnerable and the CP reroll fails as well. The sheer volume of blasters erases my leviathan. I believe it required 4 total blaster hits (D6 damage each) before my dread went down (he fired much more than that). The remaining shots erase the last cyber wolf and actually put 2 wounds on my culexus. Brutal turn for me I try to claw my way back. Bjorn is out of options. He will die to all the blasters with no invulnerable. He moves in close to take down as many as he can with him. Now for my reserves... I see a sneaky opening and decide to take it. Due to our board size and limitations his flyer has only 1 move available (it can't hover). I confirm with my opponent and we talk about it before i do the move. I drop my LFs to deny any legal move and auto kill the flyer (they are 20" away and block any legal stop before the map edge rule kicks in) I was originally planning on dropping them in the backfield to fight for objectives but I can't pass this up. The flyer will have free reign if I don't take this. I drop my last culexus and eversor on his side of the board. I need to start my recon and behind enemy line points flowing I'll talk about the backfield fight out of sequence here My eversor kills 1 kalabite with his pistol then charges in and slaughters all the survivors. This model is starting to grow on me Bjorn fires his flamer and both LC at the special transport holding the true born. If I can crack open the transport I can charge into the troops and remove a ton of blasters I whiff horribly...single wound from heavy flamer only... I charge into the venom and smash it to bits instead His turn the flyer dies because it can't move The mass of blasters erase Bjorn He tries to gun down my eversor but I make a ton of saves and only eat 2 splinter rifle wounds My eversor shoots and kills 3 kabalites My LF only manage to kill 1 of the trueborn infantry in the open Culexus kills 1 in shooting then charges in and kills 1 in melee (1 left alive). Eversor charges in and wipes his kabalites out. I then consolidate behind the building to dodge his gunship His turn he moves his ravager and guns down my eversor I kill off his last trueborn and consolidate towards his last raider (inside are his 2 archons with shadowfields) My LF put only 2 wounds on his raider Archons and Culexus spend a few rounds in futility He has trouble rolling 6 and then I make my 4++ saves I can't get through his 2++ special field Eventually the game ends and I just couldn't catch up once my leviathan and bjorn were gone. The secondary points were out of reach He has 25 I have 14 And my fun trivia fact of my 40K career so far. I have 3 losses total. All 3 are to this player. We were joking he is now officially my nemesis Hard way to start the tournament but it was fun and I have some tweaks in mind for round 2 We break for lunch after this (and I need to go do mother's day events with family now so I will update the other games later) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/346697-team-tournament-1k-may-prep/#findComment-5080202 Share on other sites
TiguriusX
Game 2 v Adeptus Mechanicus ITC Mission 2 Dawn of war deployment Only special change is we played on a 6x4 cut in half (so 3x4) Secondary Old School Recon Kingslayer-His Tech Priest Warlord From memory2 dune crawlers3 kastellan robots2 Tech priests dominus2 squads of vanguard skitariiFulgurites I use the terrain as cover for my leviathan and plan to play peek a boo around the middle I realize during my deployments I am relying too heavily on the new BETA rules and not using T1 screens as I should I even put my cyber wolves in cover so they couldn't be picked off too easy I ask my opponent if he can deep strike or reserve anything and he says if he uses a stratagem but nothing else. When my opponent finally uses the stratagem on his fulgurites it is after all my units are placed. He wins roll off for first turn and is very happy and has a huge smile He then casually tells me "oh here is what it does" The stratagem he used (clandestine infiltration) is not a standard deepstrike. He gets to do it before the game begins and then take his turn. Sneaky sneaky He obviously places them in range of Bjorn T1 he unveils the final part of his trap and moves within 3" of Bjorn. Those fulgurites and nasty and will do some serious damage to Bjorn. Might be game if that happens I flame 2 to death in overwatch (use a CP in the process) He then rolls 1 and 1 for his charge He uses a CP and rolls a third 1 I have a huge smile and he is pissed beyond belief Bjorn is spared from my deployment mistake and poised to strike in return Nothing of significance happened shooting by the way My turn I move the leviathan up and hug the terrain to avoid his dunecrawlers ("DC") and kastellan robots ("KR") Bjorn and a wolf move up on the fulgurites I debate whether to drop the eversor as well to guarantee the kill and decide I need them on the other side of the map instead Bjorn flames them but only kills 1. Bjorn fires his LC at a DC and puts 4 wounds on it Leviathan splits fire putting 10 storm cannon shots into fulgurite and everything else into DC (this was a mistake as DC has T7...should have fired all into fulgurites) Kills only 1 fulgurite and 2 damage to the DC Bjorn then charges in and slaughters some fulgurite leaving 1 alive I also send in a cyberwolf to position it on the far side and be the closest model instead of Bjorn He interrupts and kills the cyberwolf. He then casually tells me...oh I have this special rule I now have a 3++ for killing the wolf I'm like what? If I had known all these special rules I wouldn't have sent the wolf in. Turns out not to matter...he max rolls morale and the squad is gone (the dice gods really didn't like that squad) On his turn he moves his KR towards middle objective and DCs around to fire at the leviathan After finishing his shooting (not much to fire at and does nothing to me) he tries to heal his damaged DC. I have iron priests and know there is a 3" limit on mine so I ask if he has a limit. He says oh ya sorry...can I go back and move my tech priest closer then? At this point karma has smiled on me so I don't care and let him do the move He heals 3 wounds back (has 8 remaining) I need to take the middle objective from him as he is starting to pull ahead with the bonus objective. Bjorn moves on the target but I keep the leviathan behind the terrain so Bjorn is safe and can't be shot I then bring in the reserves (this 1K list relies on the reserves to pull their weight) *Note the units in a clump on the left are NOT placed. I had to walk all the way around the joined tables everyone was playing on to reach his side of the board and put them there to grab and place I drop the eversor to start clearing his rear guard infantry and 1 culexus to claim the area when it is open The 2nd culexus I drop mid board to help me with securing the middle objective (can't see in this shot because behind the crates) The LF remain in reserve until I can clear some space My shooting does nothing fancy The rear culexus kills 2 vanguard However, the eversor charges through the walls of the ruin and deletes the entire vanguard squad (the eversor is starting to grow on me) On his turn he moves 2 of his KR to fire on the culexus He heals another wound on his DC (up to 9 now) His vanguard fire a ton of shots and put 5 wounds on the eversor The tech priest dominus finishes the eversor off The KR fire a bucket of dice and only put a single wound on the culexus Turn 3 bottom....time to seal the deal I bring the leviathan out and bjorn tucks in behind him. I love the picture it looks like the leviathan is a pulling offensive lineman plowing a hole for Bjorn to run through The LF toting plasma guns take advantage of the space created by the Eversor and plop down in the middle of my opponent's backfield I leave the culexus on the safe side of the wall to secure his objective and earn points I use the midfield culexus to tuck in behind the terrain close to the KR but out of LOS. I need her for the upcoming charges on the KR Shooting is not great. My leviathan manages to put 8 damage on the weak DC but it has 1 remaining (all the repairs have paid off) The long fangs who just arrived rapid fire his vanguard to death. The plasma shots get most of the kills but the bolters help as well Where I need the dice to go well is the assault phase The culexus declares the charge first and since she is out of LOS takes no overwatch from the KR. Her job is done because I don't expect her to damage them. Next up is old bjorn and he successfully charges in as well I ask how many dice his rear DC has to throw at me in overwatch and he says a small number. I say what the hell and charge that too and roll a 10 to lock it up in melee and stop it from firing Bjorn manages to kill 2 of the KR in combat and takes all but 1 W off the final one (I tried using CP but failed to pull it off) KR technically can kill Bjorn in return but only manages a single wounding hit for 3 damage. Bjorn rolls 2 of his FNPs and takes a single wound only I'm very happy with how that turn went Turn 4 and we are told time is running out He heals up his injured DC for 1 (2 total) Fires a stubber and kills 2 LF Tech priest fires and kills 2 more LF KR puts 2 more W on Bjorn In return Bjorn kills it off T4 bottom goes even faster Leviathan kills off the injured DC Long Fangs overcharge their plasma into his warlord leaving a single wound Bjorn charges in to finish the job and rips his tech priest warlord to shreds securing all those secondary points for me Final score 22 to 9 and my first ever tournament victory Third and final batrep will be sometime tomorrow when I have free time. Man these take a long time to do!! Final note to mention is I got some personal texts from my wife about my son being ill at home during this game (think it was T1 or T2). My opponent was kind enough to give me a 5 to 10 minute pause to step out and make some calls to check in and make sure everything was ok before continuiing Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/346697-team-tournament-1k-may-prep/#findComment-5080690 Share on other sites
TiguriusX
Game 3 v Iron Hands (Primaris) ITC Mission 4 Dawn of war deployment Only special change is we played on a 6x4 cut in half (so 3x4) Secondary Old School Recon Behind enemy lines His army from memoryAll primaris force2 units of aggressors (the power fist flame guys)2 units of intercessors1 unit of reiversLibrarianChaplain-Warlord Deployment is fairly straight forward He puts a unit to babysit his single objective and the rest are on foot walking my way I hide a wolf near my objective and keep the second out of LOS but near Bjorn and ready to react Leviathan and Bjorn stand in the open to fire on the mass of infantry coming my way My assassins and long fangs all in deep strike per usual Turn 1 he marches forward and rolls a bunch of bolter dice but can't dent the leviathan. T8 against his bolters is just too much He gets a few wounds but I am rolling easy saves My turn I stand my ground and just fire The leviathan erases the closest 3 aggressors T2 he brings in his reivers using the height of the terrain and the grapnel rules to get a slightly easier charge (needs 7 instead of 9) He also manages to put a wound on the leviathan with one of his random bolter shots His librarian also smites for a wound He charges my leviathan to shut down the guns. I kill 1 in overwatch Bjorn then heroically intervenes to join the party He rolls 25 reiver dice and gets 1 wound through (Leviathan down to 11) Bjorn kills 4 reivers (even after using a CP to reroll damage roll of 1 and repeating the 1) On my turn I have the leviathan fall back. I know he can't fire but he needs to create a little space to fire next turn I bring up the rear cyberwolf and swing around the reivers to put it between the marines and bjorn just in case I bring in all my reserves as well All 3 assassins drop in his backfield The LF drop on the side to try and take out his last aggressors (the only thing that can hurt my dreads basically) The LF kill 2 aggressors with overcharged plasma The Eversor makes his 11 inch charge up onto the elevated terrain and puts 3 wounds on the unit the eversor takes a pounding in return and he uses a stratagem to attack a 2nd time When the dust settles the eversor has a single wound left That single wound combined with the successful charge lets me score recon because he makes it into that tight quadrant In the assault phase Bjorn wipes the last of the reivers On his turn he decides to abandon the dreads (he was frustrated needing 6 to dent it) and decides he will chase the assassins His last aggressor turns on my long fangs He smites the final wound off the eversor The aggressor flames one LF to death In his charge phase the LFs overcharge and land a plasma shot. It kills the aggressor before it can finish the charge His mob of infantry surround the 2 culexus assassins but they are hard to hit On my turn I start moving up the board I advance a wolf to tuck in behind terrain and keep Bjorn safe The leviathan walks forward and puts his guns in range of the midfield marines Long fangs fire at the intercessors in the building and kill all but 1 Bjorn finishes the squad with his lascannon Leviathan deletes the primaris from the middle of the map Not many options on his turn...he fights the assassins needing 6 I think he gets a few wounds through but I'm not keeping great notes at the end of this long day Eventually he actually manages to kill both assassins...this is not good for him because I can now fire at him This is the map before the final turn I wiped his entire army off the board in my shooting phase 27 to 14 Victory for the space wolves I end my first tournament 2-1 and end up in 3rd place overall My loss is to the 2nd place finisher (nemesis!) Luck definitely played a part in some matches and I learned a few tricks to avoid in the future Most importantly of all I had a great time and feel good about my final placement Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/346697-team-tournament-1k-may-prep/#findComment-5080996 Share on other sites
