Hail Hydra! (WIP Themed IG Army)

I'm working on an army themed on the Hydra organisation, and I thought I'd start sharing my progress.

It started because I noticed that the Hydra army in the 'Captain America the First Avenger' film was quite reminiscent of IG (WW2 theme with sci-fi elements, plasma-like weapons, flamers, large tanks etc.). Not to mention their slogan 'If you cut off one head, two more shall take its place.', which seemed very appropriate for IG.

Initially, I only had Red Skull as my HQ (hence why he's the only completed model so far). However, I thought it would be fun to expand the theme and add more models - particularly HQs. However, rather than just sticking to the films, I've decided to look at the comics and such as well (partially because there are many good characters that haven't yet appeared in film, and partially because some that have - like Barons Strucker and Zemo - have lacked the weapons and combat abilities they're known for in the comics).

That said, especially when it comes to the rank and file, I'm still going to aim for the film colours so far as possible (mostly black and silver/metal) rather than the green and yellow in the comics.

These are the HQs I'd like to have:
Red Skull (Lord Commissar w/ Power Fist, Bolt Pistol, Emperor's Benediction) - Finished
Gorgon (Primaris Psyker w/ Gaze of the Emperor, Psychic Barrier The Death Mask of Ollanius) - WIP
Baron Zemo (Company Commander w/ Power Sword, Bolt Pistol, The Blade of Conquest) - WIP
Baron Strucker (Company Commander w/ Power Fist, Bolter) - Not Assembled
Silverfox (Company Commander w/ Power Sword, Bolter) - Not Assembled
Grim Reaper (Tempestor Prime w/ Power Axe, ???) - WIP
Madame Hydra (Tempestor Prime w/ Power Maul, ???) - Not Assembled
The Winter Soldier (Marbo) - WIP
(I haven't decided yet whether to give the Tempestor models pistols or Command Rods.)

I might add more, depending on what I end up needing, but these are the ones I'm planning for now. Anyway, down to models, and first things first:

I used a DE Mandrake for Gorgon, as I thought it was the closest to him in terms of face and clothing. As you can see, I've filed down the blade of his weapon into something closer to a katana (not perfect but the best I can do at the moment). I need to finish off the fire and darken/shade his clothing some more. I also want to redo his hair, as I was too heavy with the highlighting. I initially tried to mimic the cream(ish) colour of his clothing in the comics, however, I really didn't like how it looked on the model, so I've gone with red instead.

He still needs some eyes and more work on the armour. I'm also wondering whether to have his clothes in a lighter purple. The headgear isn't perfect, though I do quite like it. Not finished yet, but from a modelling standpoint I'm quite happy with how this one has turned out.

Not really happy with this one. It was my first attempt at green stuffing a hood and I suspect it shows. :tongue.:

I can't actually remember why I used a Dark Eldar arm on him. All I know is that the hood has partially covered it, so it'll be a bugger to change.

The one thing I am pleased with is his scythe-arm. For something cobbled together from spare bits, I really like how it came out.

(Lots of painting work still to be done, though I might scrap this one altogether and try using a different model as the base.)

I might need to redo his hair. I thought he had black hair, but looking again I think it might actually be dark-brown. Outside of the pose, I'm not really a fan of the right arm. Unfortunately, that arm appears be welded onto the model via some sort of cement, judging by how difficult it is to remove, so he might be stuck with it.

I've got a couple of questions regarding this chap, if anyone would care to offer their input:

1) Is the gun too much? I literally found it in a box of extra bits that came with some models from ebay. At the time it seemed like a good fit, but now I'm wondering if it's a bit too much.

2) What do you think of the sword in the left hand? I know my options are somewhat limited, given that the sword is attached to said arm, but I could probably replace it with a second gun or knife. Any thoughts?

I'd be tempted to take the chainsword bit off the gun... make it look a tad sleeker so it doesnt look so heavy at the end of such a straight arm.

But I really like the model so that's more nit picky than anyhting else

That might be a good idea. I'll see how practical it is to remove it.

Cheers for the input. :smile.:

A lot of character here, what's your plans for line troopers?

I'll probably go for something simple - most likely black with some silver trims. Basically, I want something simple that won't take a huge amount of time and effort. I might try and put extra detail on some of the sergeants and special-weapons guys.

Additionally, I'd like all the basic troops to have gas-masks or helmets of some sort (rather than exposed faces). I do have some with gas masks at the moment, but nowhere near enough for all my troops.

I think I've got some special weapons guys that are at least partially painted, so I'll try and get them finished and post pictures to give you an idea.

Sorry for the lack of updates, guys.

I'm currently working on a revised version of Grim Reaper. My plan is to use the sniper parts, cutting off the rifle and replacing them with the scythe. I think I'll be able to use the same design for the scythe, just without the upper section of the arm. Not sure what to do with the left arm at the moment.

Anyway, I think the result will be a little less dynamic, but should have a more natural pose. It'll also give me a cape and I'll have another go at making a hood out of green stuff.

This is the sort of thing I'm aiming for:
