Skin's Grey Knights blog

Recommended Posts

I am finally getting round to building my GK forces.

First up is some experimentation around my colour scheme. I am going for a 'soft' Mordrak's Ghosts, greyish colour scheme (poor knock-off of Johnnyhorse's from his blog on DAKKA). I want my GKs to look like they sound in legend: flickers of grey/silver astartes, running into battle, taking names and then disappearing before the commissars start asking questions...

This is my attempt at a shadowy grey, with enough contrast to see the details of the (awesome old metal) models, with warp-charged writing on the armour.

The below are slightly different - on first impressions of them lined up against each other, which one do you like best? [1-5 from the left] - and on further scrutiny, which one looks like it would work best on the tabletop?

Very grateful for any and all opinions/ feedback

Back in the day, those models and the metal termies were the only reason I decided to play in 'this silly exaggerated futuristic universe'. I was a huge WFB fan. But then the Horus heresy started and I was sold...

Ok. Small update on my four squads. I am attempting Zenithal highlighting using an airbrush and it is turning out much better than my test models, and than I could have possibly expected.

Here are the steps I have taken. Any advice/ feedback is very welcome. This is first time I am using the airbrush and this approach. Got to say, I am starting to love the airbrush but it has taken a while (read 'lot of frustration'), to get used to it and understand how it works.

Codex grey basecoat over black prime

Step 1 of the Zenithal highlighting

Step 2 - this is super scary step; self discipline is key... so easy to try and coat the model.

Step 3 - this one was easier as you are just spraying overhead

Now for the swords - painted white

The contrast of the white sword makes a big difference and really pimps up the knight

Super happy with these - it's gone really well. Now I'm worried I am going to balls-up the shading...

The bases are going to be red. I'll be using the Martian Earthcrust.

Thanks for looking! :)

Now all the guys have their swords painted. This took quite a few layers of paint but it paid-off as they look like they are glowing white!

Next will be a faint black wash and the warp-charged white blue lettering on the breast plates.

Ok, small update: 12/20 are shaded --- 8 left to shade

Then all 20 will be dry brushed (head and chest only) then based in martian ironcrust.

This shading took ages as I had to cleanly hit the recesses with a super small brush --- shading the entire mini ruins the airbrush layers and the soft grey colour. Going forwards I think that I might try and shade before the final 2 coats of airbrush - but it may not work: gotta test it.

4 of them in all their shaded glory:

Just to show how much the shading makes a difference:

Time for an update:

this morning, all 20 finally shaded. Phew. Took ages and was quite stressful. Glad it's done.

First 4 done!!! Here I tried dry-brushing highlights - looks OK, but something was not right about it. Based with martian ironcrust. Really love that textured basing. Was a little too bright so I washed with a darker colour.

So I did a test - dry brushed the warp-charged writing and compared to the first round of models. Liked it much better so decided to drop the general dry-brush.

The second four - really happy with how they turned-out.

So here we go:

First eight done - 12 more to go...

Thanks coldfyre. And bang on the money! I saw some mordrak's ghosts GK terminators a while back, and loved them. The ghostiness also works well with the 'grey knights came and went, and all anyone knew was that some silvery grey death angles tore s**t up' lore.

I know what you mean re the blue. It was interfering with the impact of the two tone, and the colour of the base. Made them look cartoony so it has to go.

Delighted at how they turned out.

Very greatful to Capt Semper, the ETL event, and all participants for such a wonderful way to push through to the end of a hobbying goal.

Thank you!

Now that ETL is over and I have finished my first 20 strikes, it's time to get back to my first love: yes, those amazing GK terminator sprues. I have always loved converting WFB Empire models into truly dynamic poses - and when this kit came out I was hooked.

In this thread I will post my humble conversions. First up are the Falchion Paladins for this edition:

Another composition - these guys love to pose. Posers!
