Finding a gloss black paint

Recommended Posts

Hi there.

I just ordered some Colour Shift Chameleon paints to test out and it is recommended that they are used on a glossy black basecoat. I am a novice airbrush user so I would prefer a paint that can be applied by brush or is easy to work with through an airbrush. I'd prefer not to have to use the nasty paints like Alclad paints if possible.

Does anybody know a paint that would fit the bill or will I have to make do with standard black acrylics?

Any advice would be welcome. Thanks for your time.

The black colour is to give the chameleon paints a good depth, and the gloss is for getting a very smooth finish with low "tooth".

If you prefer to use ordinary black paint or primer, and then over spray when dry with gloss varnish, that would work too. :smile.:

Edit: If you're in the UK, Halfords do some good rattlecan sprays that come in black gloss. You could do a quick primer pass, followed by a gloss black pass. Then use the chameleon paints through your airbrush.

Black primer followed by a gloss coat works (or using spraycan gloss black over primer) but you can also do it one coat with an airbrush - stynylrez gloss black, an acrylic primer. Been using it as the primer coat for metallics - works very nicely. (Unlike vallejo gloss black primer that clogs much too easily)

Thanks for the replies. I recalled having a black spray can somewhere that I didn't use for modelling that I could give a try. I tested it on some card and it left a horrible spattered mess so I immediately gave up on that idea. Last night I ordered some Stynylrez so hopefully I'll be able to get somewhere with it. I am looking forward to testing the colourshift paints and I'm looking forward to starting work on a Riptide but I am not sure whether slamming those two projects into one will be a bad idea. Perhaps will test the paints on some Tau drones before I commit to a centerpiece model like that. :)

I have a question about the Stynylrez paint. I just read the directions on the pot and it recommends using MODELflex airbrush cleaner. Is this a specific airbrush cleaner that needs to be used or is it just Badger's all-purpose airbrush cleaner? I currently use Medea airbrush cleaner for acrylic paints but I don't know whether it is enough. Rather than just ordering some anyway, I thought I'd pose the question for people with more experience with airbrushes than myself.
