dbecer01
Hi, I have 10 ratlings that I'm almost done painting. I've never drilled out barrles before, because my guardsmen's barrels are really thin anyway. The Ratling rifle barrels look thick enough for me to drill. However, I'm not sure if it's a good idea since they are metal, so I don't want to make a mess, or ruin the minis. Also, I've never done this, and not sure how it would look. Anyone who can offer up some advice? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/346859-drilling-metal-mini-barrels/ Share on other sites
apologist
Metal barrels can be drilled in just the same way as plastic ones; using the same tools – a pin vice – and techniques. If you feel a little uncertain, I suggest you use the point of a craft knife to mark the centre of the barrel. This will give a mark for you to drill, and will also help guide the drill bit. Work slowly; there's no rush. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/346859-drilling-metal-mini-barrels/#findComment-5071131 Share on other sites
Major_Gilbear
Yes, the technique for drilling weapons barrels is always the same regardless of material. I posted chapter-and-verse on how to do it here if you need further direction on how to go about this. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/346859-drilling-metal-mini-barrels/#findComment-5071163 Share on other sites
Marshal Reinhard
You just have to drill harder :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/346859-drilling-metal-mini-barrels/#findComment-5071261 Share on other sites
CommodusXIII
I've drilled out the lasgun barrels of my old Valhallan metal minatures. I'd recommend going very slowly and not applying too much pressure. Bits that small are not very strong, and I've impaled my hand more than once when I've snapped them. dbecer01
Thanks, I’ve never drill out barrels at all. I’ll check out the guide. I guess I shouldn’t really have to drill more than a quarter of an inch anyway. CommodusXIII
Not even that much. Drill enough to get a visible dimple/depression, and a black wash will do the rest. Golf33
Definitely don't press too hard! The drill bit can snap, then the half that's mounted in the pin vise will feel really unpleasant as it spears into your fingertip. Subtle Discord
Also, in future, it's easier to drill weapon barrels before the paint job when there's no chance of tearing or peeling the paint and you don't need to go back and repaint the hole.
