Son of Carnelian
Hey gang. Don't own an airbrush and I'm not in a living situation where I could even have one, but sprays are still good. Problem is, I can't seem to find a white spray that works as well as GW's black. Now, I know the idea conditions to spray in and I always adhere to those, but I've tried both GW's and Army Painter's white and they are both terrible. GW's ALWAYS comes out dusty no matter the conditions and Army Painter needs to be absurdly close and seems to always cover up details no matter how quickly I spray it. What white primer do you all recommend? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/346963-best-white-primer/ Share on other sites
Burias-Drak'shal
I use car paint primer if I'm not using my airbrush. I have heard there's a few good ones in America you can use. Hopefully someone from America can give you the brands that are good. Usually cheaper as well. JBugman
Try Rustolem Painter's Touch 2X. Less expensive and easier to get than GW's paint; I get mine at the local hardware store. It goes on twice as thick so just a few passes and the models are ready. Only issue I ever have is the occasional clogged nozzle. https://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/painters-touch-2x-ultra-cover/primer/ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/346963-best-white-primer/#findComment-5074305 Share on other sites
Semper Fortis
I used to use Rustoleum, too. Good stuff. To fix that clogged nozzle problem, just tip the can upside down at the end of your session and spray until the white diminishes (usually 2-3 seconds) and you only see propellant. Works for all spray cans (except the ones designed to work upside down). The only downside is if you frequently spray just one or two small items per session, in which you may run out of propellant before you're out of paint. Major_Gilbear
You can also just buy a bag of spare nozzles and periodically change them. They are not very expensive, and will save you a lot of paint in the long run if you only prime a few figures at a time. NovemberIX
Rustoleum is pretty good, but Duplicolor White Sandable primer is my preferred brand, it goes on little thinner, but even if you over apply a bit it'll shrink pretty well into the details. Usually goes on smooth, and doesn't scrape off too easy. I usually get mine from my local O'Reilly Auto Parts. MrZakalwe
I'd second the Tamiya fine surface primers. They may look like they go on a bit thicker than you are used to but they practically vanish so losing detail is hard. The downside is that they smell bad enough that they make spraying a chore. Evil Eye
I know you said you can't airbrush at the moment but Mr. Finishing Surfacer (White) by Mr. Hobby/Gunze Sagyou is worth its weight in gold. I don't know if they do a spraycan version, they might do (they do cans of their other primers). It could theoretically be brushed on by hand but you'd need to use a fair bit of their Levelling Thinner with a synthetic brush as it's a fast drying lacquer paint.
