Grey Hunters & Wolf Standards

Recommended Posts

Hello I'm new to this site and space wolves having just started to get back into 40k (last edition I played was 5th).

I'm trying not invest too heavily in a SW army until the codex comes out so I can see what will be worth taking. So I figured I'd start my army with a couple units of grey hunters as my bread and butter units. Kit wise though what's everyone's thoughts on the wolf standard for a unit that will primarily be used to shoot and only engage in CC if necessary?

Also fluff wise who should carry the standard? If the same guy carries a plasma gun and a standard then I can treat the other guys as meat shields for casualty purposes. Would it be more of a case that one guy take the banner, another gets the plasma pistol and another takes the plasma gun?

Welcome to the Aett.

I would suggest another Grey hunter unit, perhaps enough for 3 full squads of 10 each to begin with. Or if you are on budget, aim for 3 small squads of Grey Hunters, each armed either with plasma gun and Wolf Guard Pack leader with combi-plasma, or same squad with melta instead.

To that end, assuming you haven't bought anything yet, I would suggest the Space Wolves starter box which will give you 10 Grey Hunters, 3 TWC and a Lord/captain, and then get a Tactical Marine box and a Devastator box for your eventual Long Fangs.

Between the 3 boxes of Devastator, Grey Hunter and Tactical marine sprues, you'll have enough for not just 3 squads of marine troops, but also some left for characters and heavy weapons totting Long Fangs.

All Grey Hunters can get chainswords for free, so always make sure if you don't model with them, tell your opponent they ALL have chainswords, even the special weapons guys.

For Standard, sadly not very useful as I don't use them to charge anymore unless I absolutely have to, by that time, the enemy would be very close anyway. The only assault weapon Grey Hunters have is melta so the advancing and shooting is not adviseable with GH.

Still, the standard is relatively cheap, so if you have points to spare, put one on an Outflanking GH squad if you want. Not like the whopping 25 points 1 per army deal back in 6-7 ed.

Thank you both for your replies. So far I have bought 2x wolf pack boxes and made 2x units of 5 GH with meltas and plasmas. The second box I have used to make a couple of WGPL with the appropriate combi weapons. The main reason for this is that I see a lot of people using smaller squads in razorbacks which seems like the smart move.

I haven't decided how to use the other 8 guys yet. I'm think another pack box or the start collecting set so that I can make 10x blood claws and then use the remainders to fashion some LFs.

Sadly combi weapons, especially plasmas are few unless you kitbash them. So try spend some time making pack leaders with combi weapons, by marrying the plasma pistol of the gun with bolters to create them. Or the melta barrel and parts with a bolter. Once you got 2 of each, you should be set, plus the formal one from the tactical squad or Devastator squad set.

If you're planning to use the backpack style flags for your Grey Wolf Standard, you might consider affixing it with a small magnet - not only do you have the option of whether you want to take one, but if you do you can also remove it from the model when you use its effect in game so you know it's spent.

As for combi-weapons, Forgeworld do a set for a pretty reasonable price - certainly better and cheaper than chasing bits-sellers for stock, or looking for suitable third party substitutes.
