NiceGuyAdi
I'm trying to get the canopy on my storm Talon tinted. First go was with Vallejo clear and a total failure (doesn't settle evenly). I'm looking at trying this again with Tamiya Clears. They have a number of colours, but I want to create a smoked glass look, which they don't make. But they do make a pigmentless clear. I wondered if I could add some drops of nuln oil to this to get the effect? Razblood
There is a smoke clear in the tamiya range X-19, which is used for that purpose. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/347254-tinting-tamiya-clears/#findComment-5081139 Share on other sites
Arkhanist
I use tamika clear red mixed with a little brown or purple wash to get nice clotted blood effects, but it wouldn't work as a clear tint anymore as mixing standard acrylic almost curdles the tamiya. The tamiya clears are alcohol based, so I'm not sure of it's the water or polymer that has that effect on it. PeteySödes
As Razblood says, the smoke is what you want, it works great. Ive used that as well as the yellow for tinting canopies. NiceGuyAdi
Smashing, thanks a lot, all. I thought I'd heard of Tamiya Smoke before, but couldn't find it today when I was looking. This has saved me a load of trouble. Thanks again! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/347254-tinting-tamiya-clears/#findComment-5081463 Share on other sites
Evil Eye
Tamiya Smoke is definitely worth it. Tamiya do a colourless Clear paint that you could tint with ink though. I tried doing so with purple ink from a craft shop and it worked a charm. NiceGuyAdi
Squigsquasher I'll definitely bear that in mind. For now my clear green and smoke have arrived. So next question. Can I just mask off the areas of the canopy to paint the main areas in smoke, and the HUD in green? NiceGuyAdi
Hope this isn’t considered threadomancy, but I’ve tried putting the Tamiya Clears down on the canopy and can’t manage to get an even coat. Is there a trick to this? It keeps drying blotchy. It feels like it’s too thick so doesn’t find its level as it dries. Can I thin it with a little alcohol? PeteySödes
I slather it on and let it drop down hanging it from the sprue. Works pretty well for me. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/347254-tinting-tamiya-clears/#findComment-5117370 Share on other sites
Bung
Use the Tamiya Thinner X20a and an airbrush for even coats. Doing it with a psintbrush wont give you good results with that colors. But i find Createx Candy2o colors superior for that kind of work. NiceGuyAdi
an airbrush isn’t an option for me right now, unfortunately, though it could be in six months so I’ll check that out. The createx as well. For now I’ve given the ‘slop it in and let it hang’ approach and it seems to be going better. I’d been putting not enough on and standing it the wrong way up, before. Grimoire
Late to the party with this. I've always used Future Floor Polish tinted appropriately. Works great in 1/48 and 1/72 scale. Now I always sprayed it with an airbrush. But I do know quite a few that can brush apply it. It levels very well. Trixie
When using tamiya clears you should be rocking a 50/50 mix with x-20a thinner and for best results you really need the airbrush. Sorry I can't provide anything else Edit - Badger Minitaire 'Ghost Tints' have a clear paint range that can be thinned with water or regular non alco thinner. They are great in an airbrush but have no xp using them with a regular brush.
