Advice for battling tzeentch

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm playing a 1500pt game against a tzeentch army and have no idea what to expect or how to to decide on what to take. I'm 99.9% sure he runs a purely daemon army so no chaos marines. Obvs I know psychic powers will be flying left, right and centre just need some help on what units to look out for and any counters.

Cheers

Most demons live by their invul save, so AP is of negligible usefulness. It's mostly about the strength of the attacks so you wound on a 3+ or better.

A mix of dakka will serve you well...you will want a fair amount of light arms fire, via bikes/WG with SBs/Aggressors/et al, and a fair amount of plasma (hellblasters are just nuts, but inceptors with plasma option work wonders too) for the higher strength and potential overcharge. I've only recently warmed up to the primaris, but they do have a lot of what we need right now.

Wulfen with their 5+ FnP can absorb a reasonable amount of mortal wounds if your opponent goes on a smiting frenzy (not exactly a rare occurrence). Keep some cyber wolves around to soak a few smites...cheap and effective.

Definitely do not forget Bjorn...he is an auto-include in all lists of 1000+pts, and maybe even as low as 750:). I prefer the twin LC option, but an assault/helfrost cannon works if you need the points elsewhere.

I actually recently had a game with 1000 points of Tzeetch and got my butt handed to me. Meaning I lost, and I'm still not sure how to counter him. Nevertheless, i will try advise.

My list was basically 3 HQs, a Wolf Lord, Battle leader and Rune Priest with 2 Plasma MSU Grey Hunter, 1 Melta MSU Grey Hunter, and a Long Fang squad with 1 Missile launcher, 1 lascannon and a heavy bolter. Supported by two Razorbacks, one of which was assault cannon.

My opponent had:

Changeling

Herald on chariot

Daemon prince without wings but 3+ invuln relic.

30 Pink horrors

10 brimstone horrors

10 brimstone horrors

1 Mutalith

Long story cut short, i wasted points on the Lascannon. He had 3 character daemons whom I could not shoot at because < 10 wounds, and he had a HORDE of horrors all over the place. The Mutalith died more due to overcharged plasma than my actual heavy weapons.

But if you see that tentacle monster, BEWARE! It can fart an AOE effect mortal wounds. Unless you are in transport, everyone will be in danger in the open.

Generally, one has to beware smite spam from the 3 daemons. Less from the pink horrors as they only roll one dice for casting smite. Pink Horrors @ 30 strong also pump out 1 extra shot per model so can go up to 90 shots at one go. Do not underestimate the dakka.

As Gherrick says, you need more dakka and range to wittle him down. maybe have a couple of missiles instead of lascannon like I did. Plasma cannom will do to as you don't need to overcharge to wound on 2+.

Bjorn is an easy answer, but still risky as he is 250+ with a TLLC. Better assault cannon for this army. And a battle leader for reroll wounds. I think you shouldn't bother with Rune priest at this point, although storm caller is useful to give your rhinos and marines 2+.

Long story cut short, before you charge, make sure they whittled down until they run away.
