TheHarpDaddy
Hey guys, Just thought I'd write about my recent experience at a 1500pt tournament in Sydney, Australia. The tournament used ITC format and was 3 games. I took the following list: Custodes Battalion HQ Shield Captain on Dawneagle Jetbike - Auric Aquilas Relic - Hurricane Bolter - Interceptor Lance Shield Captain on Dawneagle Jetbike - Hurricane Bolter - Interceptor Lance TROOPS 3 Custodian Guard - 2 Guardian Spears - 1 Sentinel Warblade - 1 Storm Shield 3 Custodian Guard - 2 Guardian Spears - 1 Sentinel Warblade - 1 Storm Shield 3 Custodian Guard - 2 Guardian Spears - 1 Sentinel Warblade - 1 Storm Shield ELITES Vexillus Praetor - Vexilla Magnifica - Guardian Spear HEAVY SUPPORT Coronus Grav-Carrier - Twin Arachnus Las-Blaze - Twin Lastrum Bolt Cannon —————— Astra Telepathica Vanguard HQ Mordian Primaris Psyker - Force Stave - Order of the Iron Star of Mordian Relic - Terrifying Visions Psychic Power - Psychic Maelstrom Psychic Power - Grand Strategist Warlord Trait ELITES 5 Sisters of Silence - 5 Boltguns 5 Sisters of Silence - 5 Boltguns Astropath - Laspistol - Psychic Maelstrom Psychic Power I took the Astra Telepathica detachment to try and see how including some psychic defence would go in my army, and for the bonus of Command Point Regeneration. It came into play in game 2 vs Grey Knights, but more on that later. Game #1 vs Tau My opponent had a beautifully painted Tau army that was a mix between big units of fire warriors/pathfinders and battle suits (1x Riptide, 1x Ghostkeel, a suit commander and 3 or 4 crisis suits). I gave my opponent first turn and focussed my secondary objectives around killing his larger units of infantry. My opponent was unable to kill anything on my first turn as he turned all his guns towards my Coronus Grav Carrier, which for Tau can be incredibly hard to shift especially with the -1 to hit banner. This allowed me to turn around and get a quick lead on objective points and I maintained this lead throughout the game. Win to me! Game #2 vs Grey Knights My opponent had 2 Nemesis DK Grand Masters, a Brotherhood Captain, 3x 5 Strike Units and 3x 5 Interceptors along side a supreme command detachment of Cadian Company Commanders for command point regeneration. I deployed extremely defensively knowing that my opponent would try for some 1st turn charges. I weathered an incredible amount of firepower, but failed to stop a single psychic power all game unfortunately (even with the sisters of silence). The mortal wounds just started proving a little too much for me, and I basically ended up having wasted near 200pts on Psychic Defence that would've been much better as more custodes combat units. I had absolutely no trouble wiping my opponents smaller squadrons in combat, but didn't really have the tools to efficiently deal with his GMNKDs. Loss for me! Game #3 vs Necrons My opponent had a pretty cool list, namely 2 big units of destroyers, the deceiver that could teleport a large tesla immortal unit and some other ranged vehicles and characters. I gave my opponent first turn and deployed as close to my deployment line as possible, knowing that I would need to hit the destroyers as hard as possible to stand a chance in this game. My opponent was way too aggressive with his list, however, and after failing to kill anything of mine on his first turn I turned around and wiped one destroyer unit, two immortals units and a lord in combat (I was able to get 2 guardian units and both shield captains into combat, while small arms fire hit some destroyers). I was waaaay up on objectives and by turn 3 my opponent only had the deceiver, a cryptek and a couple of destroyers left on the field. Then, however, the deceiver just wouldn't die. I'm talking about 6 combat rounds with two shield captains and three guardians, shooting attacks and all, and only doing 3 wounds. This was a tactical error on my part, as I was probably much better falling back with the captains, shooting with the hurricane bolters and the rest of my list (including the coronus grav carrier) and trying to wipe him that way. Regardless, I just couldn't roll to wound the deceiver to save my life, and while I had a massive lead early game my opponent got quite a few points from killing both shield captains and a guardian unit in combat and via mortal wounds. My opponent ended up just edging over me in terms of points as the game didn't end until turn 7. Massive bummer and a loss for me! Especially when I started the game so well. Regardless, I had a blast and especially enjoyed using the Coronus Grav Carrier and doing a few different things with my custodes list (i.e. not just taking heaps of jetbikes). I do think I'll be dropping the psychic defence detachment, even though it also means dropping my command point regeneration... I just didn't get enough mileage out of the Sisters of Silence and in ITC format (which is mainly how our tournaments are formatted) I think I'm just better off taking more custodes units and trying to deny my opponent kill points, as the sisters were pretty easy targets. librisrouge
Dropping that Detachment is fine because, and I replied to your army list too late, the Primaris psykers can’t have the relic or warlord trait. You’re not an Astra Militarum Detachment, Primaris can’t be Mordian (or any regiment), and Primaris can’t take IG warlord traits. Sadly. Hope it at least takes some sting from ditching those psychic defenders. TheHarpDaddy
Oh snap, I feel awful to have pulled the wool over the guys I played against... Definitely takes the sting away - but thanks for pointing that out regardless. My bad! dtse
Interesting your TO let you use the coronus. Anyway for ITC Custodes can actually deny the ability to score secondaries vey well. Force your opponent to take recon and old school and behind enemy lines with list design. TheHarpDaddy
Interesting your TO let you use the coronus. Anyway for ITC Custodes can actually deny the ability to score secondaries vey well. Force your opponent to take recon and old school and behind enemy lines with list design. That’s what I found as well - as soon as the sisters of silence had been killed, my opponents generally found it quite difficult to score the kill/kill more objectives. The bikes are also fast enough to prevent an enemy unit staying in a quarter for too long as well. In regards to the coronus, the guys at frontline gaming have encouraged all dataslates being used (at ITC events) including the FW beta ones. That was the TO’s rationale, anyway!
