On the train to the London GT

Recommended Posts

As the title implies, Im on the Train on my way to the London GT.  Not the main event Im in the narrative event fielding Metallica because im stubborn that way;-) and a year ago when I booked it the idea of being in the main event was a bit much ....  ( i didn't want to run 9 kastelans and 9 dragoons)

I'm not expecting to set the world on fire with my list which is pretty " balanced"  im am taking Greyfax because the narrative has a lot of special focus on psykers and the uses the Chapter approved Storms event deck, So people will be psyker heavy.  Is anyone else going to be there?

The first person to find me, I will happily buy an overpriced lubricant for (beer or soft drink of choice)

What im running if anyone is interested

Metallica  Brigade  ( excuse the formatting ... phone)

2x TPD and a Seer
3x 5 man ranger teams with Arc
3x 5 man vangaurd teams  with plasma

1 x 3  Taser Dragoons

1 x Las balistari

1 x Las balistari

1 x  5 Infiltrators with goads

1 x  5 Rustalkers   ( I know  not optimal but it was them or a Datasmith for my 3 elites and these  have beaten up mephiston in the past)

1 x  5 Corpiscari .... ( i'm Metallica these do work for 70 points  )

3 Onager   (2 Icaras  1 Neutron ) I figure i've got the  15 CP to play with very turn for one of these to hithe t ground at +2

1 x 2 man Robot team

Aux Detachment ( with so much CP it seemed fine to spend  1 on this)

Greyfax

Out of curiosity any specific reason to use Metallica rules? To me it seems to add very little, especially as you seem to be willing to sacrifice CP to get a psyker for some optimization.

The vast majority of your army gains nothing from metallica, only Ryza would add less I think.

Well first game practice against one of the guys from tabletop tactics I played to a draw , against a hard hitting nurgle force ..

I run Metallica while not as good as stygies for the -1 to hit they are massively more mobile .

which is one of our downsides especially in objective games , basically you never don't want to advance a unit unless you are charging ...and it allows us to fall back and shoot at -1 to hit when you are within 6 of a hq , which lets face it you always are or you aren't quit playing as mech right, the -1 leadership is ok in a pinch too .

But the main reason is ... They play WYSIWYG here and I am painted white . I didn't want to have an argument with someone .

Quite noble!  I feel like you're also thinking outside the box and using the strengths (while subtle) of your respective FW to make interesting tactical plays.  So bravo to you, sir!

So 5 fantastic games of 40k on some amazing tables, I would heartily recommend any narrative event run  by these guys
While much of the event was blighted by slow security delaying peoples entry to the event and people being annoyed
bout the  " not quite finished state of the terrain which I guess I can understand   the narrative boards were outstanding,

Here's the narrative pack they put together for the event, which we played through https://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/a7e101_5d1a93cd67eb416f98e47d0182a93c19.pdf
on top of this organisers dynamically adjusted things based on the faction standings.  I'll give an example All the death players guard players got of to an early lead so everyone else was -1 leadership for game 2

Here are some examples of the 50 odd amazing  tables we had access too

Game 1  Pure Harlequins

( I'm suddenly feeling bad about my two Icarus arrays )my opponent is a very nice 20 something chap, he has 2 Starweavers, 2 things that look like starweavers but apparently are more gunboats and some harlequins on Jetbike's a couple of death jesters a Solitaire and finally lots of deep striking insane clown posse.

Talking beforehand and my opponent was a little down about how much better his army will be next week,  So I have a word with the organiser about letting him use his faction " leaked"  masque which is all agreed, i mean it's word for word leaked isn't it, so we set off.

We are playing on the snow map shown in shot 1 im afraid I dont have any in-game snaps from this one, as im dumb and hadn't thought about recording it yet,
My opponent gets to turn one, but against the odds, I seize, and large amounts of his army disappear to what frankly is almost perfectly tailored to deal with Harlequins

On His turn, a berzerk solitaire  launches herself across the battlefield to try to slay Octavia  ( my female tech priest dominus  and warlord)
obviously, there can only be one queen on this Battlefield ..... Octavia is grumpy about this .... the Solitare gets 10 attacks with the harlequins kiss ... and somehow Octavia survives on 1 wound, she strikes back with her Axe and her relic mechadendrite hive getting 6 attacks from it and promptly murders the psychopathic elf.

The game goes on in a pretty standard way ,  I've spread out and captured lots of objectives for a comfortable win ..... but his harlequins are perfect at murdering Sicarians and deep striking clowns have rampaged all over my trenches in a mad effort to kill Octavia ... to his credit had given up trying to win and was having as much fun as humanly possible trying to kill Octavia. The game ended as they call time on the round a Troop master had again charged Octavia again, which drops her to one wound ... and taken 4 back in return.

Game  2 Saim Hann

Looking suspiciously like my personal favourite craftworld  .. Beil-Tan , in disguise  , this was a wonderfully painted army played by a young man who was supervised by a proud dad , the dad had been playing since   RT and those are his Gen 1 jet bikes ,  This army fought me to a 1 point victory point loss , this was unfortunate because we only made it to round three and im sure I would have caught up as the tide was truly turning in my favour as most of the stuff that could hurt me was already dead.

A wonderful game ... where Greyfax was sniped out :-( by this cheeky chap - hiding in a literal snipers nest

Game  3   how now .... Green Tau

33111411_10216241852258785_6617261412936

This game was very odd indeed, It involved a roving patrol style deployment and a special rule kicked in giving all characters without the pysker or demon keyword +2 movement and those with it - 2, movement   (Greyfax was obviously slowed recovering from her run-in with Illic Nightspear last game )
We also had our first massively impacting Empric Storms card draw  .. (we are drawing one a turn each  to reflect the strange effects of the warp rift )
In Turn 1  as a persistent effect, everyone got very lucky and got +1 to all saving throws ... ( armour and invulns .)

With all this speed on tap vanguard and ranger teams were caught dashing Across the board up to 14" ... firing with limited effect, The pair of Icarus did their job mulching battlesuits,  and my dragoons spent most of the game chasing down a -2 to hit Ghostkeel.  I scraped a victory on points here due to my mobility, i could risk leaving cover knowing i'd have shroudspalm, but we both had a lot left due to our strong saves ,  Rangers and fire warriors are equally hard to kill in cover with a 2 up, and shooting at either of our robots with anything less than -3 ap was wasted  time .

Day  2  game 4 Necrons

Im particularly hungover this morning ... If you enjoy the social side of things these events are amazing ,  the bars all over Westfield are taken over by 40k players and people just join in with everyone's conversations I end up drinking with some seriously American chaps...  until the small hours of the morning and im starting to get  A bit too old to just get away with this anymore.

I finally realise I should probably be recording some of this stuff, largely because one of my work colleagues son's is just starting getting into 40k and would love to see some Necron shots.

Downside  ...   Night fighting rules... mean you need to be real close to actually do anything  hence the quite strange battle lines here have to get real close, this is an ultra-bloody game  where  we go right to time finishing on turn 5 ...  my opponents Necron shielding is amazing for totally ignoring my lascannon and better fire , but I know to focus down his units of Necron and just play my objectives,

Once again,  Octavia get an honourable mention for heroic intervening into a charging shard of the deceiver, and doing 4 wounds , enough to  allow my surviving 1 wound dragoon to kill him and have him promptly blow up mauling half of our the lines.

Day 2  final Game -   I turn to the dark side and try to reclaim some  Imperial Gaurd tanks

Due to the loss of a few Xeno's / chaos players to dropouts exhaustion and the victory points system pairings and I've won 3 games and lost by 1 vp
So I was been asked to play for the other team, however, had not quite understood the horror of that was coming my way.

On paper this game was going to go poorly, I lose the turn 1 roll off and was going to have to get inventive,  exactly as expected my neutron laser and Dragoons the only units who are really capable of really hurting any of that T8 armour including his Macharius Vulcan are removed from the board.  I'm left with 2 laser chickens and 2 Icarus,  along with all my Skitari which my opponent doesn't think are going to hurt him too badly.  I begin a game of objective hide and seek, using terrain to forcing my opponent to move his tanks to try and kill me while i rush to the centre for the prime objective.  This mission is kill points combined with objective cards and I need to minimise losing units while scoring, I do my best to pick off Russes 1 a turn with overcharged plasma, TPD firepower and ground firing Icaraus's while mulching all his guardsmen.

Top moments from this game are an amazing round 1 of shooting from one of my las Ballistari  doing 11 damage to a Russ  which gives me a spot to hide in on one side, Octvaia using data spike two rounds in a row and both times doing 4 mortal wounds  to kill the last objective secured leman Russ.. which trumped the only thing i have left on the objective  5 hq's hiding in a crater behind a lone Kastelan robot .

This game ends bloody at the middle objective which is worth 8 points... I  win  41 to 38 ... by swarming the objective in the middle  with HQ's and killing his only Russ in combat that  had  charged into combat  to try to take the objective with objective secured .

Cheers folks, I think it was a combination of luck terrain and sheer movement speed that got me through...  that an operation hide the characters behind the kastelan.

Whats funny is ... looking back was I only changed mode on my robots once the entire event .... and it was against the Necrons where we were already 12 inches apart.
apologies for all the typo's im far too tired to go back and check it now ... maybe later after I have slept a bit in my own bed.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/MGKJfbW8z87zwv0k1   All home and accounted for ... back in the cabinet

I love the cabinet! I want one.

Great showing, enjoy the rest.

I know the feeling. Perhaps I can do without a bed?

Thanks for the coverage of the event. It looks like there were more Admech players there than I would have expected. Congrats on the win against the Leman Russ convoy, that is not something you'd really want to see facing you down. :p

Love it! Good write up and glad you had fun. Re the cabinet that’s ace. Are such things usually quite expensive and where would be a good place to look?

I’m just keeping my models in a case at the moment but I like the idea of them being on show.

Get some rest and may the machine god watch over your cogitations

Just to jump in, but the low cost cabinets I and a lot of other folks have is the Detolf one from Ikea, for 40 quid.

I'm not sure on the brand/price shown in the pics here though.

Back on topic, great reports. Well done!
