How to run Gulliman in a BT army?

Greetings brothers!

I think it could be interesting to read your ideas about how to run Guilliman in our army, of course it has less synergy than in a UM army, but still he is the Lord Commander of the Imperium, so I think I'm going to run some games with him.

In the UM subforum there is a topic "Agressive GMAN" where brothers are talking about non-gunlines with RB, and there are some interesting points.

Any suggestions?

I'm going to convert forgeworld guilliman into an angry black templar Dorn just for fun. I might run him as a counts-as guilliman, so I'm very interested in this topic as well. Hope you get some serious replies!

Edit: P.S. he looks good in black: https://ironsleet.com/2017/12/08/the-specialist/

If you want to paint your armour black probably, you go all the way and join Abbadon ;)

Closer to the topic, running him as counts as Dorn or something feels closer to the spirit of BT to me.

Actually, I saw a potential in quite interesting friction and stories when Ubersmurf returned - I was expecting especially factions Ike the BT a bit more ...hesitant.. to join Roboute and his Imperium 2.0

(But please do note that this is just here to convey my POV, not to go down that road again.)

I know there are a number of us thinking about getting FW Dorn and  running him as RG. I think there's a decent argument for that course.

So, maybe one way to start this discussion out is:

1. What does RG do? What is he  good at? (HtH monster? Aura Buff-man? I honestly don't have a clue)

2. Where would his abilities enhance Templar strengths? (e.g. Would his buffs stack with Helbrecht/Grimaldus/EC?)

3. What kind of builds would RG-newbies start off with to experiment?

You dont, not only because his codex is worthless and Sigismund was proven right about the breaking of the legions and the limitations of the codex but also because his rules dont really mesh too well with the Black Templars. His best benefit only affects Ultramarines and the others are worse than what Helbrecht and Grimaldus offer, his +1" to advance is negligible to me when you consider he is 400pts and thats another issue, you're paying 400pts for a beat stick that doesnt have access to psychic powers to buff itself like Demon Primarchs or larger weaponry like a Knight.

Guilliman shines in an Ultramarine army, alone he is useless and I find that to be very fitting and good but it doesnt add anything to us that we cant get elsewhere.

The best you get is +1 to advance/charge rolls, rerolling ones is nothing we can't get elsewhere, so RG might actually be a way to make a black tide work better, maybe with a compliment of Ultramarines as honour guard, like a venerable dread and a bunch of veterans with some guns to make use of the reroll. And you want your templars stabby, so UM could do the honourless shooty thing, right? ;)

Well... I know many BT players don't agree with the idea of using Guilliman or many players are answering in the line of "Play Black UM", but that wasn't the point.

I'm glad reading some serious and in topic answers.

Yeah, I wanted to open a topic about what synergy we could gain with him, not about "fluff", so I want to know if people thinks he worth his points and the best way of running him. I'm not going to compete only playing with some friends, so I don't care if I'm not maximizing my benefits from his rules.

I like this answer, it is interesting, in your opinion he adds nothing we couldn't obtain in our own faction. Thanks brother!

I agree, rerolling ones is not a big bonus. But I also suspect he could fit in a Tide list, I have never played Tide lists so I'm really interested in studying both concepts.

1. RG buffs UM gunline , that's his primary role.

Another role for him is a DISTRACTION CARNIFEX.

Also as a Warlord he brings a huge amount of CP which is always welcome.

2. RG doesn't have any particular synergy with BT. Templars don't really need that +1 to charge, don't need to re-roll morale and you usually get re-roll ones to hit from other characters. There are a lot of allies which have much better synergy with BT lists, the most widely used is Celestine

3. Any list which needs a DISTRACTION CARNIFEX can use RG as such.

Honestly, an IG Battalion detachment would bring MUCH more value for less points.

Done it. He looks and plays just fine. I managed to incorporate some of his existing base but a lot of resin went wasted! Never any complaints from friends or opponents, although I imagine he wouldn’t be tournament legal without prior approval, if that’s your thing.

He looks magnificent! It's almost as if he's saying, "I'll be right here if you need me." :)

Two thoughts came to mind:

1. <fluff me> "How dare you try to exclude the Emperor's Praetorian!"

2. <confrontational me> "So, from a model perspective, exactly what features would cause him to be excluded?"

2. <confrontational me> "So, from a model perspective, exactly what features would cause him to be excluded?"

Weapons. Usually tournament rules imply full wysiwyg in terms of weapons and this guy clearly doesn't have neither Hand of Dominion nor  Emperor's Sword.
