Need Help with Escalation Campaign Army Start

Hello,

because of Work it didn't get to play WH40k for months and the 8th Edition is practically new for me.

I will be playing a Escalation Campaign and need my first 500 points.

These only have 1 Restriction: The HQ in this first 500 Points has to be my "Lord of War" for the rest of the campaign.

I don't want to be have a an uber good set up for the 500 points but want a general direction what

HQ to choose and how to Outfit my Grey Hunters.

Thanks in advance Brothers

Bjorn is your goto Hq guy only issue is he takes alot of points greys hunters good shooter/cc unit ferisan wolve pack for objective grabing and then maybe either a razorback or long fangs if you have the points. Grey hunters will be bolter gun, pistol and chain sword. Also maybe add a plasma gun spec weapon guy

If you dom't mind exploring in the first tournament with a deep possibility of not doing great your best bet long term is indeed Bjorn. He will do okay in 500 pts. but the list will be minimal.meaning you will have a hard time. But he will escalate for the next game pretty nicely so it is a good long term bet. And he will be hard to put down at 500 pts.

Bring Grey Hunters with plasma or maybe even a few Intercessors for a more durable screen and try your best.

It depends what your personal goal is for the escalation and each match as well as the rules of your escalation league.

Are you learning the game?  Do you want to dominate?

Do you want to slowly build and play a fluffy list?

Here is the log I kept of my first ever escalation experience

If I were to play another escalation league I would go hardcore 500 as follows

Patrol detachment

++ Patrol Detachment (Imperium - Space Wolves) ++

+ HQ +

Bjorn the Fell-handed: 1. Legendary Fighter, Heavy flamer, Twin lascannon, Warlord

+ Troops +

Grey Hunters: 4x Chainsword
. Grey Hunter Pack Leader
. 3x Grey Hunter w/Bolt Pistol
. Grey Hunter w/Plasma Pistol: Plasma pistol

+ Elites +

Venerable Dreadnought
. Fenrisian Great Axe and Blizzard Shield: Blizzard shield, Fenrisian great axe

++ Total: [28 PL, 499pts] ++

Will chew through most lists unless they are extreme outliers

You don't even put the soft squishy GH on the board.  Spend a CP and outflank them.

Bjorn can shoot any armor you see (including a flyer in a 500 point game)

Most people won't have hard counters for a shield dread at 500 points

If someone goes hardcore objectives (like 3 culexus assassins) you won't be able to compete with board control

The other benefit is Bjorn + Shield dread are core components as you grow your list

The GH needs different wargear but that all depends on your escalation rules.  My league let me swap wargear every game so long as the basic unit remained.

That is how I personally would do it all over again.  If you know you are playing small map and want better GH you can swap out the twin lascannon for whatever you like and upgrade your GH with it.

Good luck.  Hope to hear your results when finished

I agree that Bjorn is absolutely great now, about time, am I right??!! I guess tactically he'd be an ideal candidate, at a very steep cost, especially at lower points. Upside is that once you get into the 1K's, he's going to pick up and become very much worth his early inclusion. I will admit that I haven't played my Wolves more than 5 times in 8th edition, so I may not be the best voice to hear in the din of the Fang.

Grey Hunters, I'd keep cheap and full of snarl. Throw in plasma for certain. Other than that the 'true grit' kit is the shhh-...

End of Line

Honestly Bjorn doesn't gave to be a warlord to be stellar. I'd say you want to build a solid backbone for your force at the outset. Add Bjorn a 1k where he will truly shine. And early on I would go for a cheap wolf guard battle leader to support some long fangs and then bring some razorbacks and greyhunters. A nice 500 point core to build around. But that's just my 2 cents.

I've not managed to play that much 8th either with work and family. So gaming wise can't really point you in one direction over another. However over the decades I've collected/painted many armies and find the ones that have stood the test of time have been more rule of cool/themed over games efficiency.

Lol ... But I'm a collector over gamer.

Whatever you go for consider joining the ETL it's a friendly challenge to help you get that army painted up.
