Growing my TS - Looking for advice

Recommended Posts

Hello there fellow Aspiring Sorcerers,

As a means to grow my thousand sons, I have started a small campaign with my brother (Hes running, Adeptus Custodes and CWE).

The campaign starts at 400pts and after every round (2 games against one army and 1 game against the other) we get 100 pts to spend for the next level. I will also get 25 extra pts for winning 2 out of 3 of the games and an extra 50pts if i win all 3.

When we add units to the army they can be understrength so i could take 4 rubirics for eg.

To start with I'm thinking of taking a DPoT with wings and a 10man squad of Rubrics with SRC. What im thinking of doing for the next 100pts is to add 5 enlightened with Bows, then add in a Shaman for the next level, although that might change.

I appreciate that small point games do not lend themselves well to us TS players, but is there anything you guys would change or add in instead?

All help welcome

What does CWE mean?

Are you playing the 400pts games on a stangard 6' * 4' board or something smaller?

What are the ruels for understrength units and upgrades? Can they get upgrades even if they do not have the minimum number?

For a bit more variety I'd go for DPoT 5 man rubric (with SRC if allowed) and 5 enlightenend.

Craftworld Eldar, so a battle for the psychic phase then! For small point games always try and get some numbers on the table, more so for elite armies. For escalation games also try and consider the bigger picture when planning your additions. As Quixus says much depends on how you can expand your army, e.g. if it's ok to add to or even change existing selections.

So we are playing on 4x4 boards at the moment, but this may change depending on how far we go and what we feel like.

In regards to adding to the army. We can have understrength units, and can add on to them in later stages. However we can only take the options if we have the numbers. Eg. i could take a 9 man Rubric squad but wouldnt be able to take a SRC until I got the 10th man.

Can not have multiple units understrength of the same unit, so If i had a 4 man rubric squad I couldnt take another understrength rubric squad until i filled out the previous one. I could however take a 4 man squad of rubric and a 6 man squad of tzaangors.

Things like wargear can be added to the unit from their base gear later, but cant be changed, so i could add in warpflamers to the rubric squad but wouldn't be able to change them later.

My challenge at the moment is to have an army that is effective against Custodes (T5, 2+, 4++) and CWE - Craftworld Eldar (T3, 4+ for the most part).

Hence why i decided on Rubrics over anything else. With their AP-2 it should really help with the Custodes and should shred the eldar.

Would you say Ahriman is a better option than a DPoT? The DP just seems to be so much more killy, although Ahriman get the extra power and the +1 to cast it, so i could go for Prescience, Weaver and Glamour to buff the Rubrics, and then give the aspiring sorcerer Tzeentch's Firestorm.

I see, sounds like you should focus on numbers at first then start dropping in toys as you progress. Custodes have no psykers so against them you'll not have much competition, and Mortal Wounds will also get passed their durability so maximising that is worthwhile.

AP-2 is in a good spot I think for general use, reduces saves enough to matter and against those with invulnerables you "lose out" less :smile.: Don't forget to let us know how it goes with regular updates and good luck

@WarriorFish, when you say numbers do you mean focus on low cost troops, like Tzaangors / Cultists? I just feel they wont pull their weight against the Custodes - Not worried by the CWE.

Think im settled on the list below.

Ahriman 166pts - Prescience, Weaver of Fates, Glamour of Tzeentch (WL)

10 Man Rubric Squad w/ SRC and Plasma Pistol on Asp. Sorc - Tzeentch's Firestorm

Then going for the next stage I will have enough for 6 enlightented w/ Bows.

Plan will be to slowly march up to get in rapid fire range, while buffing the Rubrics and smiting the Enemy.

On a side note, the other force im playing is Harlequins which is a very interesting matchup against the Custodes, what with both forces having a 4++ but Harlequins mostly having -1 to hit. Its very much a kiting game lol

They are both great HQ's and you have correctly identified their advantages and drawbacks. You will probably want to get both in your list eventually. I'm not sure which one is best to get first.

It's going to be hard getting a DP in later, Ill have to bank some points for later levels. Altho the DP would do amazingly, I think Ahriman adds more to the list as a whole and that extra power would be very useful.

If i was taking the DP i would probably give him Warptime and Diabolic Strength meaning he wouldnt be supporting the Rubrics. I think the Rubrics really need the support as his eldar will kite me around and spatter me with their Shuriken, while the Custodes will eventually catch up and ruin my day in combat.

Thanks for all the help, I will most certainly keep you guys upto date on everything and im sure i will be back asking for more advice :)

@WarriorFish, when you say numbers do you mean focus on low cost troops, like Tzaangors / Cultists?

Numbers generally - how you do that should depend on what you want to do :smile.: My (untested) preference is for Rubrics because, well, is it Thousand Sounds without them? I agree that the other choices might struggle a bit, Custode jetbikes could easily fart them off the board for example and I imagine Eldar won't struggle to muster the firepower to do the same.

My Slaanesh Daemon Prince does well, but I'd agree probably better to add him later and get Ahriman as Quixus suggestion. At low points he might be held back a bit as you don't want him isolated and Rubrics on foot aren't the fastest thing around.

Looking forward to seeing some pictures too

I would happily upload pictures if I ever work out how to do it lol. What I have painted so far is Ahriman (my brothers model), 5 rubrics (5 getting done) a DP and 10 Tzaangors. I have so many projects is hard to get stuff finished which is why I’m looking forward to this campaign

I like your concept for 400 pts. its not a point level that I'm used to playing so its interesting to see how you approached it. The one sugestion that I would offer is having Ahriman take warp time instead of weaver, then give the rubrics weaver instead of firestorm. In a small game warptime can have a much bigger effect than firestorm, for example moving 10" a turn toward an objective while shooting, or moving twice to get within 12" to bring the pain.

Because of the low points level it really just boils down to who can outlast the other while slowly scratching away. Having ahriman (while not as in your face killy as the DP) brings an extra power and easier smites which I think will greatly help against his 4 t5 2+ 4++ Custodes
