Is x2 Brass Scorpion crazy?

Recommended Posts

My Meta is very competitive, and someone is always bringing their tournament list. Ive always enjoyed the Greater Brass Scorpion model and want a low(ish) model count army list, so for those 2 reasons havent been able to get the idea of running 2 out of my head.

My list would be something like

x2 Greater Brass Scorpions

Abadon or 2 lords

Cultist Blob

Oblits and/or Havocs

Would I be crushed no matter the extra 700pts I bring? Ive had my baneblade almost destroyed 1st turn, and Ive seen a few super heavies destroyed 1st turn, but I think because the GBS doesnt decrease BS, and fire might be split, this would be mitigated some. I know this isnt fluffy; I dont want to play with 200 cultist, but would like an easy to move and play tournament list and would love any input on whether or not this is a feasible idea.

That's a lot of points invested in 2 models.

Rather than pontificate on how they would perform, let me ask: what else could you do with the points spent on those beasts? A Daemon Primarch, a Fire Raptor, a Leviathan, 4 Daemon Princes, some combination of those?

It's worth considering. I have a lot of models that look cool and never see a table top. The Brass Scorpion, in particular, is very expensive in real world dollars and game points. I would not want to buy a pair unless I was really committed to how they work.

So let's talk about what else would need to be in your list to build around this investment.

First off - CSMs or Daemons? Totally up to you, but it would be wise to consider whether there are things that better compliment the GBS' in a Daemon's list. CSM auras work on CSMs, Daemon auras work on anything with the Mark. Thinking about how these would work with Skarbrand and some Bloodletters around, gives me chills.

If you are going CSMs, Black Legion, Alpha Legion and Emperor's Children would be good Legions to look at. World Eaters might be a stretch, given their Legion trait and the lack of Sorcerers.

Second - do yourself a favor and get a Sorcerer to cast Warptime. It's probably the best psychic power in the game for an army that wants to be in close combat. Even if you are not casting it on a GBS, you are going to want to hit fast and hard. Something will benefit from it.

Third - look at units that clear screens. You don't want the GBS' tied up with the chaff. Anything with a range over 24 inches and multiple shots will be your friend - Dakkapreds, Havocs, Forgefiends, etc. Obliterators, they might fit the bill, deep striking on your half of the table to clear a lane. You have an advantage because your opponent will be shooting at your GBS', not at anything else on the table.

Fourth - proxy some models before you spend all that money. I used to run a Chaos Spawn list in 5th edition and proxied about 20 of them until I got all the models for it. Turned out the list was good and it was worth buying all those models off eBay. It could have turned out to be something different.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm most likely running them Black Legion with Abadon and a bubble of other shooty things. Legion trait doesnt apply to Super-Heavies, and honestly I dont think I want to be in combat with most things unless it's another super heavy. I think hordes work much better in tying up enemy models by assault.

Well, let me be the first to congratulate you on choosing the best Chaos Legion to accompany these beasts to battle. Advancing and shooting with 40-man squads of Cultists, with Abaddon there to offer rerolls, is a decent enough tactic for any army.

I run a list with 3 laspreds and one usually gets shot off the board turn 1. I don't think you would have that problem, your opponent would likely be focused on the GBS' and not your supporting units. So consider some long-range firepower for tank-sniping.

With regards to screening units: the size of the GBS will likely keep each within Abaddon's reroll bubble turn one. Consider your deployment carefully, it might make sense to have Abaddon deep strike so they can get it. Each one averages 13 shots between the Scorpion Cannon and the Soulshatter Bombard, 26 shots should be enough to wipe out some screens and open a lane to the good stuff.
