My latest project is Azrael, Chapter Master of the Dark Angels. What can I say, I haven't painted a Chaos Marine in a while! ( :D )

However, before I paint him, I thought I would get his lil helper done. He aint finished yet, but thought I would share! :D

This is a pretty awesome miniature, but because it is in metal I am struggling a little bit with getting it as smooth as I would like. Early days yet though!

I don't mind admitting I am struggling with this model. A lot of the detail isn't there. Which I can only assume is because it's a metal miniature. It is making it difficult to remain enthusiastic about painting it, which is a real shame because generally speaking it is very cool. Just parts of it are very frustrating.

Not exactly the best I have ever done, but I nearly stopped working on this model. So it's the best it is going to get!

Both models are looking great so far.

You might consider the lack of sculpted detail as an opportunity to add painted detail.

Older Citadel models tended to lack a lot of the detail that we've become accustomed to in recent years, providing a few knick knacks here and there, but otherwise presenting more plain models. The shift to plastic and resin facilitated the quantity and quality of detail that we see nowadays.

Whilst the detail is super annoying, it isn't the lack of it, it's the fact that loads of it is only half there. Many of the details on the chain belt are gone, the sword hilt and chest feathers are all painted on, as they weren't very visible, and even the right foot has dodgy armour. :/

Thanks OakRiver :D

I tried using some different paints on the sword, some scale 75 ones. But essentially I just wet blended some dark blues and lighter blues to get the effect I was after. It wasn't 100% as successful as I would have liked, even with a wet palette the paint kept drying a little too quick. :/

Thank you. I've tried that before and had limited success without a wet palette. Did the Scale 75 help?

It was pretty much the same as using citadel paints really. They are just slightly different tones. I used some of the colours from their "NMM - Silver" box set they do. Perfectly good paints, but I think I could have got a similar effect using any range of acrylics! :D

Tzen is painting Dark Angels I’m so excited.

Haha, sorry JJD, this guy hasn't turned out as well as I would have hoped so far. :(

Well my aim is to reach a standard you consider “not so well”

Haha, man, that is a very achievable goal!  :D

Thanks. I've tried a few different range of mini paints and I haven't noticed a wide difference between them.

Yeah, my experience has largely been the same. Don't get me wrong, GW don't produce all the different shades possible, so I go elsewhere when needed, but it's all acrylic really. :D

Further work in progress pic of Azrael.

Still work to do on the back banner, and I am yet to start on the back pack.

Beautiful work on Azrael. He and Dante are iconic 2nd Edition minis and I'm nervous about what an updated version of them may look like.

My biggest struggle has been with getting a good gold that covers well, but all that I have found so far requires multiple thin layers, which can make painting small details, or edge highlighting a challenge.
