Delta.Skies
which one do you think is better statistically. I'm very curious when it comes to equipping the watch captain. Quixus
It depends on what you want to shoot at. The stormbolter is better against hordes, and the MC bolt gun better at more elite infantry. Except for the AP they are nearly identical. Against an unarmoured target they do the same damage on average, but D2 of the boltgun means that on one wound models half of the damage is wasted. The AP lets the bolt gun pull ahead against better infantry. TheUbikator
Bare bones? MC Boltgun is better against 2 wound infantry. Stormbolter is better against 1 wound infantry. With banebolts or Castelan of The black vault, storm bolter is flat out better. More shots = more wounds. The only instance where MC boltgun would be better with relic or trait is 3W models as destroyers or crisis suits. Shooting vehicles with boltgun is just waste of firepower. On a side note, as far as Captain wargear comes, Combi plasma with warlord trait is excellent. You can safely shoot both profiles without overcharging and both profiles are dealing 2 dmg. And when something really nasty comes out you can always shoot overcharged plasma for sweet 3 dmg. spacewatch
Knowing that sometimes my estimations may be too conservative (I calculate backwards from unsaved wounds to shots required to make the kill, always rounding down to full integer to simulate physical dice roll) but anyway I estimated what Captain can do by shooting MC-BG or SB over the course of the average game. Captain is able to kill (always using best ammo and RF range) - 2 marine terminators (SB 2, 4 with banebolts) - 3 marine veterans (SB 5) - 3 marine bikes (SB 2, 4 with banebolts) - 1 orc meganobz t4w3sv2 (SB 1, 2 with banebolts) - 4 orc nobz t4w2sv4 (SB 3, 6 with banebolts) - 6 orc boyz t4w1sv6 (SB 10). So there are cases where MC-BG is better and there are cases where SB is better. As TheUbicator said good rule of thumb is that MC-BG's D2 damage is best used against W2+ models and that with relic or trait SB is much better. My character killer Captain has SB, banebolts, TH, jump pack and my plasma protector/buffer Captain has MC-BG, axe and jump pack. However, combi-plasma with trait sounds very interesting too. Thanks for the tip! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/348037-mastercrafted-boltgun-or-stormbolter/#findComment-5102571 Share on other sites
Delta.Skies
After I do the point calculations I'm going to magnetize his left arm for his main load out. My army is horde friendly already, but from my list I'm lacking against elite and multi wound enemies. brainstorming this morning for the watch captain... Watch captain - jumpack. Thunder hammer . Mcbolter Make him your warlord - castellan of the black vault on the hammer - banebolts bolts on the MC boltgun Str 8 -3 with 4 damage with 4 attacks With 3 damage now on your MC boltgun Now if you include a librarian and cast might of heroes on him he is now coming in at str 10 -3 4 damage with 5 attacks. so the potential to put out 26 damage in one turn with -ap or 28 damage with a storm bolter Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/348037-mastercrafted-boltgun-or-stormbolter/#findComment-5102803 Share on other sites
Mobius0288
For me, it's a matter of taking banebolts or not. If I don't, I take the MC bolter and use my Captain to throw down tempest rounds since he hits on 2's with rerolls of 1. If you want to optimize the damage from just him, probably a storm bolter so you can get more shots to hit per shooting phase. Increases chances with the use of Stormbolter. So i think thats the route i would take. Chris521
Keep in mind that the MC bolter limits your weapons choices. Remember, the datasheet says you trade your chainsword and MC boltgun for two items from the Deathwatch equipment list. You can only have chainswords, relic blades and xeno blades with it. We can also take a xenophase blade if you like!
