Chaos Lord Tom
Hi, Welcome to my first log on B&C, I've been lurking here for more or less 2 years but I never dared post any of my work. Time is come to unveil my new project, please bear with my skills. As I'm not really satisfied with my last board project (a 24 tiles modular board with fixed structures - buildings, rocks...) because of lack of uniformity, scales issues, I decided to launch a new project to build a board to play with my son. The idea is to build a modular board composed of 6 (approx 2x2) tiles. Two of them will be flat and 4 of them will have two levels. Without further ado, here is a sketch up I made with foam core : http://i.imgur.com/rPJQxX5h.jpg http://i.imgur.com/qzJ256gh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Rofwu4Wh.jpg Obviously, I've been inspired by GW Realm of battle board. Levels will be connected with ramps to allow vehicles and bikes to get up and down. I started the build with blue foam (not really blue actually) this week end and here is how the first tile came out : http://i.imgur.com/jgX2EzAh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/uuRZJCmh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/w5c8pHch.jpg?1 So far the hardest task is cuting the foam making sure that what should be vertical is really vertical ! Lot of adjustments and sanding are required and I need to make sure that I stick to the dimensions to ensure modularity. All surfaces are not clean and ramps do not fit perfectly but I don't think it's so important because everything (including walls) will be covered with PVC foam. I'm made a test for a metal ground : http://i.imgur.com/93ZH2eOh.jpg Painting is not perfect (too much brush strokes) and the round pieces will be more spaced in the final product. Next step is to prepare the three other tiles while the PVC foam is shipped. I'm a bit torn about what to do with the lower ground, I've been thinking about a kind of industrial waste with small wreckages, holes covered with metal grid, pieces of my metal ground partly covered with dust and so on. I may be interrested by any other ideas ! Any comment, idea, advice are welcome. I'd be more than happy to benefit from your experiences, Brothers. Iron Sapper
Looks good so far. Not enough terrain threads on the B&C. I like your idea for the ground. Maybe you could model the small wrecks as scatter terrain so they could be moved around. Can't wait to see more progress. Chaos Lord Tom
Hello, Part 2 of my WIP log. Not much time during the week but I managed to cut the 3 other structures of elevated tiles and I finished the floors of 2 of them : Elevated tiles : http://i.imgur.com/9ZiUzVub.jpg Floor : http://i.imgur.com/mSiGauhb.jpg In the mean tine I received the fences I ordered, pretty satisfied. They're meant to be mainly decorative and will not provide cover : http://i.imgur.com/7RmXWTeb.jpg http://i.imgur.com/bLwixaTb.jpg http://i.imgur.com/8ARnwynb.jpg Next, i plan to finish the floors then I will get back to the ramps (cutting and floors). Bonus explaining why I advanced slowly, I wanted to finish this squad : http://i.imgur.com/6rWIf2rb.jpg Looks good so far. Not enough terrain threads on the B&C. I like your idea for the ground. Maybe you could model the small wrecks as scatter terrain so they could be moved around. Can't wait to see more progress. Scatter terrains are a nice idea, I have a few sector mechanicus buildings coming (a magnavent, 3 furnaces, 2 stacks, 1 set of haulers and pipes) and two old manufactoum boxes that I want to use. I'll see if scatter terrains will suit the board. I guess they will mainly as cover providers or road blockers. Iron Sapper
The board is coming along nicely. Great paint on the Poxwalkers. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/348064-industrial-board/#findComment-5107965 Share on other sites
Chaos Lord Tom
Last two weeks have been very busy on other fronts and I faced some diffculties due to lack of experience.... Then progress was slow. After seeing that the foam I was planning to use as floors was not dense enough and that gluing it to MDF would warp the whole sandwich I had to change my mind and chased some real blue foam much more dense. I also desided not to glue the foam on the MDF but to screw the MDF on the foam with a few spots of glue to avoid warping. I also found a good technic to cut my ground tiles as vertically as possible : I clamped the foam board between two MDF boards already cut then carved the foam along the edges of the MDF. I'm pretty happy whith the result So here are the tiles, on wich I started glueing the ground of the elevated portions : http://i.imgur.com/6A3y5g0l.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/9CGcGyWl.jpg I also finished the sidewalls of the higher ground : http://i.imgur.com/jrOHGFxl.jpg I'm thinking about adding two carved crossed lines in each "square sections" to add a bit more texture. I started 4 of the middle ground sidewalls : http://i.imgur.com/ix9u8fnl.jpg And here is the view of the higher ground sidewalls dry fitted : http://i.imgur.com/Jf16B7Ml.jpg http://i.imgur.com/bcGC0Fil.jpg I still have to work to reach a perfect fitting but I'm pretty happy of the projected end result In the mean time, I also thought about the ramps connecting the grounds. My initial plan was to reproduce the grounds tiles scheme but it may be a bit boring then I'm planning to paint them with large hazard stripes and carving the separations between black and yellow in the foam. I will try to post a test piece during the week. Obviously, there's still a lot of work ahead but also a lot of fun. Chaos Lord Tom
So here is the test ramp with the stripes : http://i.imgur.com/ipwrbDll.jpg?1 and a weathering test : http://i.imgur.com/MM4auJUl.jpg?1 note very happy with it. I used a small "sponge like" tool and applied Typhus corrosion. It seems more dirty than weathered.... Any advice ? Brother Cambrius
An excellent start to a big project! In terms of the ramp needing more realistic effects, I'd suggest taking miniscule gouges out and/or bullet/bolter holes here and there in it and add a good amount of gunmetally scratches/drybrushing with some black too to add that more weathered appearance. Things going up that ramp would likely skid and scrape so there's be plenty of that. Google some pictures of steel works and similar to get a good idea and source too. :) Cambrius Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/348064-industrial-board/#findComment-5116942 Share on other sites
Chaos Lord Tom
Quick update, I glued all the ground tiles : http://i.imgur.com/ljy5NNZl.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/siKA6byl.jpg There's a bit of fitting work to be done. I also went forward on the lower side walls and decided to add ground bits on the lower grounds to allow a smoother transition between industrial and waste parts of the board. Sgt. Blank
Awesome project. I am a big fan of making my own terrain and building the board takes that to another level. I'm impressed with how precise the cuts are so far, it will lead to a great end product. As far as weathering the yellow, maybe try dry brush (sponge) lightly along the edges and in the wheel path with the black base color. Chaos Lord Tom
So progress was made ! I've been very busy with family and work stuffs mid july but I managed to spare some time last week end to go forward. I must also say that I was a bit delayed by a warping issue on my tiles that is not really solved but I will live with it as I can seem to find a proper solution. I guess I will level the warped corners of the tiles to make them more stable even if they're not totally flat. I tried this to solve the warping issue but this damned foam board manage to bend the wood planks ! http://i.imgur.com/3SfMAZqh.jpg Enough for my troubles here are the pictures of my progress on the tiles. One nearly finalized tile : http://i.imgur.com/dl2gisKh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Z1EN9IGh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/WKaYf3nh.jpg I still need to fine the milliput I use to fill the gaps. On the other tiles I filled said gaps with plaster (you know DIY plaster in tube for filling holes in your walls) cause it was much easier to work with. I'm not very happy with my small rivets (really small), so I ordered a pack of semi spheric nail beads of 1,5 mm to see if I can get a better result. I also began my work on the flat tiles : http://i.imgur.com/PTWmQR1h.jpg I plan to add few crevisses and pehaps more burried pipes. Here are pictures of the 6 tiles assembled : http://i.imgur.com/H4DvstIh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/IufTdzoh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/De2Xu7jh.jpg There's a little bit of fitting to be done especially because I didn't work yet on the sides that are not very even and also plaster is sometimes out of place. The warping may also be an issue. Next step will be to finalize the flat tiles and to texture the flat part of the elevated tiles, I plan on using very fine sand and crackle paste. Hope you like it, all your comments are welcome to improve my work ! Chaos Lord Tom
so much to do and so little time, here are two pictures of the flat tiles textured : http://i.imgur.com/XLK5UZAh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/GguB4eGh.jpg Pretty happy with these. I'm currently texturing the 4 other tiles, pictures should be delivered soon. Chaos Lord Tom
Hi, here's a long overdue update. I finisher the second flat tile : http://i.imgur.com/AX0rWiSl.jpg And the four levelled tiles were painted and washed, I'm left with the drybruch hightlights, one of them : http://i.imgur.com/zpTAxG2l.jpg Good day ! Chaos Lord Tom
Finally, I finished my board. Here are a few pics : Full album here : https://imgur.com/gallery/RlRHVDz Overall, it was a very long project. Longer that It should have been mainly because I lacked time in the end. I was not able to spend more than 1 hour per week in the last months. I learnt a lot of things and am pretty excited to play a game on it but I need to go ahead on the buildings. You see a manufactorum and a few conatiners in the pictures. I have more sector mechanicus buildings to build and paint. I hope I will not need another 6 months...
