Dealing with invulnerable spam

Recommended Posts

Well done in coming third :tu: As for invulnerable saves galore it's a tough one - the standard is as you mentioned throwing dice at things but this is naturally relying on the odds and as we all know the dice don't always play. It's not a bad default answer but anything to assist in that goes a long way, in this case Mortal Wounds are the obvious solution but it's not always so easy to muster them.

There are powers that remove invulnerable saves, but Guard don't have access to them directly and that still relies on a psyker. Custodes are a bit of an outlier though in how they operate with them, so perhaps you shouldn't think about killing directly but also management? All the fancy armour and weapons aren't going to help if they're stuck battling Guardsman squads for example and maybe some dedicated AA for hunting those infamous Jetbikes?

It also depends on what the invuln saves are. If they’re a 2+/5++ (TEQ), something like autocannons or heavy bolters work well, Hellhounds also do great for this. You’re not wasting extra AP that gets negated by an invuln. Taking Custodes from 2+ to 3+ really means they’re in the same spot as a space marine. I wouldn’t waste things like lascsnnons or Basilsks on them, but a battlecannon is a great option too. Being AP-2 means youre hitting that Custodes invuln, but not going above it.

Theres ratlings which deal an extra mortal wound on a 6. Vindicare assassin that hits & wounds infantry on a 2+, AP-3 and ignores invulnerable saves.

Else psykers or lasgun/punisher/wyvern spam.

You could play them at their own game and tie them up with bullgryns or just a cheap unit.

Mass Lasgun fire doesn't really care if you have a 4++. For Tau Drones, shoot the drones directly with your small arms, then when they're gone unload your heavies into the bigger targets.

Custodes are tougher, especially those bloody Dawneagle Captains. Still, massed Heavy Bolters and Russ Battle Cannons should bring the weight of fire needed to push through 2+/4++. Hydras are likely very good against the Dawneagles (+1 to hit; S7 for wounding on 3s; AP-1 to reduce their 2+, but not wasted vs the 4++; and D2 to chew through their multiple wounds).

Me and a guard player had problems dealing with invuln saves on flyrant spam, and our answer came to be primaris psykers using Psychic maelstorm, smite, and ultimately taking an Aux Detachment for a single space marine Librarian for the Null Zone.

We tried throwing more and more shots (I was pumping something like 200+ Bolters and Flamers) while he was throwing the same of lasguns, but we we're losing too many men too quick to win the attrition.

An allied marine detachment (throw in some scouts for the board grab) with null zone... or the new predator autocannon knights. S7, AP-1, D3 and 4d3 shots seems custom-designed for swatting Custodes to me.

If you are looking to stay pure guard, the obvious answers are harder to come by.

Nullzone need a charge number of 8, and librarians don't have +1 to cast. Which means...only about 41.6% chance to cast it, before opponent's dispel. And it need your librarian coming very close to enemy units...

All true. A jump pack librarian helps negate the distance issue, as do the fact that flyrants want to be close for smite and other psychic powers.

A command reroll helps with the odds, and while it's not a guarantee, if it goes off once suddenly these guys go down super fast, with a couple meltas or plasmas eating them for breakfast.

If the enemy spams elite invul units. Then spam plasma.

If the enemy spams cheap invul units. Then spam anti horde weapons like punisher gattling cannons.

If the enemy spams heretical shenanigans. Then just proclaim exterminartus and make sure you're off planet when you do so.

Sorta drones, shield generators.

Tau can spam Invulns?

Drones are painfully easy to neutralise and Shield Generators are generally the least worthwhile Support System.

Yeah, Drones don't have any targeting restrictions.  Shooting them first with Multilasers, HB, Lasguns, etc before using the big guns on their suits is the way to go.
