Dex's Projects (40K, Necro, BFG, Surface To Void Missiles)

Evening all,

I figured I'd start logging my hobby stuff to try and keep momentum up on my painting/modelling.

I've been wargaming since I first got Necromunda back in something like 1997 or so. I started playing 2nd Ed 40k after that and everything snowballed from there. I drifted away from the hobby during my late teenage years, returning during 5th edition to a very different hobby (where did all my specialist games go?).

I paint in a slow and incompetent fashion, and I have a crippling case of hobby butterfly syndrome, so I'm hoping having some onlookers will keep me chipping away at things. I have just had a second child, so I'm not overcome with time for painting.

What do I need to paint?

  • Probably at least 5k points-worth of Blood Angels. My first and primary army.
  • Tyranids
  • Grey Knights
  • Chaos (Death Guard/Khorne)
  • Good-sized Imperial Navy, Chaos and Space Marine fleets
  • Goliath, Escher and Van Saar gangs
  • Something like 20 Blood Bowl teams, not that they'll appear here.

Priorities at the moment are getting four gangers done for each of the gangs, completing some termagants and genestealers before rewarding myself with a Mawloc/Trygon. Then on to some Death Guard and the never-ending Blood Angel backlog...

So what's this Surface To Void Missile thing all about then? Pretty much all my armies like to get the business done up close, and my regular opponent plays Guard or Tau. Having played a few games that looked remarkably like my army sprinting towards a hurricane, I needed some LOS blocking terrain. I've also always found the standard objective game a bit weird. "Prepare for deployment men, I have no idea what we're going to try and achieve but I do know it will probably change constantly and arbitrarily throughout the battle". I was wanting to build a terrain piece that you might use for the centre of a battle.

I was originally thinking a command centre, but that would probably have emplaced weapons that you've then got to factor in. I was rereading The Bear And The Dragon, specifically the attack on the ICBM facility, and I thought that when you want to assault a world, you'll need to take out the anti-ship defences. I'm thinking something that looks a bit like the silos on this old COD map:

The idea is that silos like this will give a nice chunk of LOS blocking, when you consider the surrounding blast shields and everything, and potentially make a nice objective-based game as well.

So, remember when I said that next up was three lots of four gangers, followed by 2 squads of Tyranids and a Trygon? And do you also remember my crippling hobby butterfly syndrome? Of course I did none of those things!

Back when 8th came out, an agreement with some crazy fool that thinks Primaris are OK led to me getting 2 Dark Imperium boxes worth of Death Guard. That means lots of duplication, but the DG are so monopose and complicated that it'll take more skill than I possess to do decent conversions.

I did look at a couple of them and think head swaps would work, and some of the helmets are very aesthetically similar to the AoS Nurgle stuff. So, I put 'chaos helmet' into Ebay, found a few likely candidates, watched them, and fluttered off to something else. Then, when I should have been painting Necromunda gangers, I ordered some of the helmets, they arrived yesterday, and I started mocking up options.

I've got two of the central model, that comes stock with a MkIII helm. I really like the pepperpot helm on the right in both photos, I've already lopped off the horns and filed them flat, but I think I need to scrape off the base of the horns as well. I was thinking of adding a comms aerial or similar, but I think that'll look odd on both sides. I love the faceplate with the vertical slits, but the horns make it difficult to fit. It won't go on the torso with the raised gorget, it will literally only fit that precise position on the torso in the middle, and the horns are so integral I can't remove them. I might still need to shave shoulder pads or cloak to fit it on. Both the other helmets are also tricky to fit, but I'm a bit worried they do look too Warhammer Chaos Warrior. The alternative is to chop a MkIII helm to fit the outer two models. Not sure where to go, beyond wanting to use the pepperpot and vertical slit helms in some way.

I have also made some progress on Necromunda, drilling barrels and basecoating, but there's nothing worth seeing yet.
