FundoMentals Raptors Chapter

Recommended Posts

After 25+ years away, I've come back to 40K with plans for some Sensible Marines; so stage 1 of my Raptors Chapter is a Sternguard Veteran Squad. Here's the Sergeant:

Sternguard Veteran Sergeant

Citadel Corax White primer, with a few thinned layers of Army Painter Combat Fatigue. I picked Combat Fatigue as the darker greens looked a little too close to our Angelic friends, but it has come through a lot lighter than it looked on the website...
Close up of the Sergeant:

(Yes, I've now noticed the big burr on his pauldron :sad.: )

C&C welcome, thanks :smile.:

Yeah I agree with you there mate, I think it looks just a tad too light for raptors, it could just be the light but it almost looks like death wing armour. What era are you basing them in? Badab? If so you could base them on that highly toxic world (can’t for the life of me remember it’s name) and just add a bit of weathering? Look forward to more whatever you do! I have a soft spot for any chapter that took part in the badab war!

It's a little darker in the flesh than it appears here, but not by much, The green power armour seems to have come after Badab, so more Taros / Third Armageddon. I'll try black primer on the next mini, or possibly a thin coat of darker green...

The sergeant looks promising, but...

Why does Duke Nukem look so angry? Some jackass politician try to ban alcohol, tobacco, and porn, "In the Emperor's name!"?

Nothing to do with banning anything, he had the Barking Toad curry last night, and you know how hard it is to get that power armour off quickly...

++ - Assault Team, ready to engage... - ++

Veteran Sergeant Cartagena orders one more volley, and looks up towards his jump-pack equipped Battle Brothers.

++ - Received, Assault Team. Engage. - ++

--

Sergeant Pegahmagabow's long range Scout Squad had picked up their trail, coming out of the Red Wastes and heading south. Three wartrakks, thirty plus on foot, not a big force but enough to threaten the local Imperium civilians. Pegahmagabow called it in, then followed the trail.

The nearest combat troops were the Veteran Guards of I Company on Recruitment Duty. Numbers were still low in the Chapter, more so since the IXth Company were declared 'deliquus durante bello'. So the veterans drummed up volunteers, bringing out the shiny weapons and best power armour, showing off their marksman skills and getting the local youngsters excited about the Legiones Astartes. When Pegahmagabow's call came in the Veteran Guard squad responded immediately. Thirty six hours and a 270km yomp later Veteran Captain Juutilainen and ten Veteran Guards were tracking the Ork mob from the shadows at the edge of a forest. A Runtherd with a Grot horde of twenty Gretchin led the way with five Nobz and twenty Boyz following, then the wartrakks closing the column, no sign of a WarBoss though.

"We need to know where they came from, and why they're here." Said Juutilainen, "Sergeant Pegahmagabow, follow their back trail. Sergeant Cartagena, we'll need prisoners..."

Further up the track, Sergeant Cartagena strung his Sternguard along the treeline and watched the Orks approach. Captain Juutilainen was taking the Vanguard to the top of a sheer rise, 60m above the track. As the Orks passed in front of the rise, Cartagena gave the order to fire. Four Kraken Penetrator rounds ripped from the Raptors Bolters. The Runtherd disintegrated in a green mist of Ork flesh and blood, three wartrakks exploded adding more Ork to the general environment. The Grot horde broke into general panic, running into the Ork mob causing chaos. The Nobz led the Ork Boyz in a Slugga firing charge at the treeline. A second Bolter volley took out four of the Nobz, then Cartagena's Battle Brother opened up with his Heavy Bolter from the flank, cutting the number of Boyz by half, isolating the remaining Nob and herding the Gretchin back towards the rise, where they hid amongst the wreckage of the Wartrakks.

In the confusion of the flank attack what was left of the Ork mob milled around lost, unable to see an enemy and unsure of where the fire was coming from. Cartagena moved his squad silently around the treeline, using two centuries of experience and field craft to select a new kill zone. The voice of Captain Juutilainen sounded in his ear,

"++ - Assault Team, ready to engage - ++".

Cartagena ordered one more volley, four Bolters fired in unison blasting Hellfire bolts at the confused Orks and ten Boyz became six. Sergeant Cartagena looked up to the top of the rise, just making out the jump-pack equipped Veteran Raptors, waiting for the word to go.

"++ - Received, Assault Team. Engage - ++".

The green is closer to what I had in mind (it's Army Painter Commando Green), I just need to do some detailing to break it up. Also the bases - any advice on what to do with them?

The matching Vanguard Squad, along with Veteran Captain Juutilainen and Sergeant Pegahmagabow have all been base-coated in this shade, too... Photos to follow as they're done.
