Getting back into the hobby

Hi guys.

So, I’ve been out for just a little while (think 5 years, but it’s a bit hazy...)

Am thinking about getting back into things.

Where would people suggest I start?

Obviously a rule book of some description would be good.

Have seen the ‘Index’ codeces. Are the specific codexes supplimentory to this or are they just rules repeated with a load of extra detail?

The Rules changes from 7th Ed. to 8th Ed. we so drastic that every race needed lists for the new Edition. The Indexes were place holders until the Codecies for each race/faction gets released. The Codecies have more units and rules for their specific race, as well as all the fluff that the Indexes were missing.

It’s worth mentioning that some units or models—and even specific model loadouts—that exist in the indexes were cut from the codices. These index rules are still legal, and can be added to a codex army.

Do you have an army in mind? Do you have an old one you want to reboot?
If you're considering Space Marines particularly Primaris the Dark Imperium box set would be a good way to start!

 

The free rule set has plenty to get you started with just to learn the base mechanics without getting into the real nuts and bolts of what makes 8th so different

You'll also want to read the current FAQ's and Chapter Approved as there is rule changes in there you sould be aware of

At this point most the codexes have been released except a few (Orks, Space Wolves, Genestealer cult, Imperial Agents). So indexes won't be necessary unless you have legacy units that might require the Indexes for rules.
