thewarriorhunter
I have never painted cloth/cloaks before. I have a captain in cataphractii armor that I am painting up. I am not sure what color I want his cloak to be but am leaning towards either a dark red or a dark blue. I've watched several tutorials on painting cloaks and I think I can manage, I just need to figure out which color to go with. For the record he will be Raven Guard. He will have the same paint scheme as my Sgt, black armor, white arms, gold trim: Hidden Content GW released the Solag model with a red cloak and while I like it, I'm not sold on it: Hidden Content I'd love to see what you guys have done, perhaps a color I've not considered will jump out at me! I'm also open to any tips or tricks you have for painting cloth with a brush. Axineton
I went with a magenta cloak when I was in a dark angel phase a couple of months back mate. Used the citadel app for magenta to get the colours. A few coats and this was the result. Vykes
Don't mind the photobomb, I'll put em behind the spoilers bit. Primarchs... they always need cloaks: Marine Heroes... still need cloaks: And practical. How few there are. My general thought when it comes to a white and black armoured form is to give it a bit of colour, A company colour that you prefer is always great, or go white on the outside with a transfer or trim decoration, or a tint in the folds, then coloured on the inside. A bright crimson would look pretty rockin' against that black and white armour with bright trim. Brush tips, while airbrushes will always make things stupid easy (most of the primarchs except for Lorgar were airbrushed) it's usually just about wet blending down into the shadows. So start with the lightest colour or at least a light mid tone, then add some thinned paint and quickly (and I mean quickly) try to spread that outward a bit so you don't get watermarks and get that transition effect. I'm usually too impatient and my place is too blasted dry for it to work well. Krakendoomcool
Two things stopped me from replying to this straight away. One was getting the hidden content to work. I think I've got that now. The second thing was just how good Vykes cloaks are! Not many cloaks are going to come off favourably after seeing those. Brother Vykes your an artist, your Primarchs in particular are stunning! But I thought it might help anyway. More achievable cloaks below... thewarriorhunter
Really appreciate everyone's input and showing of cloaks. It's given me a lot of ideas. I'm still leaning towards the dark red or blue... I may go red since my army is the typical '3rd' company of the Raven Guard and the deep red might mesh better with the army than if I went with blue. And Vykes' scout picture reminded me I have done a cloak, but because it was something different I wasn't thinking of it in this context. Here's my woodland camo pattern I did for my scouts. They're currently stalking through a forested ridge line as they provide advanced scouting and over watch for the rest of my army as it advances behind them: Hidden Content Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/348595-show-me-your-painted-cloaks/#findComment-5115806 Share on other sites
thewarriorhunter
Vykes, how do you do your scenic bases? I see a small gap from the model to the rest. Do you just make a larger base and rest the model in it for display? It looks really cool! Vykes
You nailed the hidden content thing Krakendoom, mate! And thanks eh, that's real high praise from ya! Honestly, it's just airbrushes make it all like it's cheating (and black and white rattle cans with a transparent or airbrush paint can do almost the exact same thing. So long as you have black and white primer and a way to tape off the rest of the model to prevent overspray, it's a pretty easy way to get it done). Man, the troll cloak in particular is an awesome idea. I don't think I've seen someone try that outside of just painting a slamander special character. But I'll toss in my vote for two tones too, Especially if you plan on differentiating the company colours from personal/role colours. IE, blue librarian cloaks or what not. That's pretty close to the woodland stuff I remember, good job on it too, thewarriorhunter. Seriously, I almost never feel like I have the patience to pull off an actual camo patterning. It's a lot of dedication :) And yeah, I think I agree on the dark red/ crimson/ burgundy (like Fr33dom's awesome Gravis Captain up there!) being a great spot colour for the black and white colouration. Dark blue can run the risk of fading in with the black a little. Oh, the scenic bases are just FW pieces being FW pieces, they come like that and you just drill 'em and magnetize em down so they can pop off and the 40mm primarch base pops out. But the same thing can be easily done using a 60mm base and a 25-40mm base. If you can use a light material like 5mm (base thick) light crumbly cork you can just a permanent marker to trace around the base size and cut the circle out. Then take the other piece and break it in half so that it's a separate ring. One half will be part of the top plate of the display base, the other will be the removable part (best to glue a bit of plasticard or what not set under the removable part it so that it doesn't crumble.) Then just base it up with PVA and whatever else you want, paint it up, and you'll have your display base, the removable half-rim, and your normal base, all of which you can paint at the same time if done in advance :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/348595-show-me-your-painted-cloaks/#findComment-5115853 Share on other sites

slitth
I just went for the camouflage effect. But if you are looking for the right colour, I would look it to some colour theory Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/348595-show-me-your-painted-cloaks/#findComment-5116167 Share on other sites
