Daylight Lamps

Recommended Posts

I went through a similar search recently. My conclusion was that the lamp is less important than the bulbs. I ended up with a couple of cheap desk lamps from B&Q with 'daylight' led bulbs I bought online.

The bulbs need to be cool white - look for 6000K to 6500K. As led bulbs give quite a harsh light, I then hung a piece of tracing paper/greaseproof paper in front of the lamps to get a more diffuse light for photography.

It's not the neatest setup, but it is cheap and it works pretty well.

I can second both ottlights and daylight bulbs in standard adjustable lamps. The ottlight (fluorescent tube style) does give a nice clean warm white, but I also do like the intense cool white an LED daylight bulb can give. To be fair I do generally add in an H1/H7 style halogen bulb that adds back in a ton of warmth, I also have everything rigged up at varying distances from above to control the light plot.

If it’s for photography, the quality of the bulbs is also important. Bulbs don’t have an even distribution of light wavelengths, and the nasty ones have big spikes and dips across certain colours. That can make photos with nasty colour casts that takes someone with time and a working knowledge of Photoshop to remove.

It’s not a perfect guide, but if you’re buying bulbs with a CRI rating over 90, you should be good.
