My next FW model?

Recommended Posts

I’m heading to work in a few minutes but I thought I’d drop this question off and get back to it this evening.

I’m going to the Forge World Open day next weekend and have put aside enough cash to get a Falchion for my HH Alpha Legion.

I’m now having second thoughts, my local gaming group has lost a couple of other HH stalwarts so it’s harder to get a game and I’m starting to look at 40K models. I like the look of the Brass Scorpion but am not really sure at this point.

I’m looking for a nice Lord of War type model and for reference my armies at this time are.

HH Alpha Legion

HH Talons

40K Iron Warriors

40K Custodes

Any thoughts about what’s next? I’d be interested to see what you all think.

Cheers

Hmmn, my 30k group is growing with people leaving 40k to join it, but hey, its different for for everyone.

Why not build your Custodes to easily transition between 40k and 30k, its what I'm doing.

The next Imperial Armour book is going to be a Talons book anyways, so all those beautiful FW Custodes models are going to get 40k rules.

Telemon is always great, the Contemptors all look fantastic, but if you really want an LoW, look into the Orion.

I bought my first FW models recently and on the holiday Wednesday fielded two Butcher Cannon Leviathans with my Thousand Sons. They were awesome. They brought down a Valiant Freeblade in two turns through the sheer number of shots (with support nearby, so hitting on 2s and rerolling 1s with Veterans meaning they wounded it on3s) and made it fail its burden roll in the meantime, shutting it down hard. They tore through everything - between the high strength and the number of shots nothing could survive.

The models are also pretty nice. Lots of flat surfaces to add chaos bits, not too hard to work with (speaking as a person working on resin for the first time). Not even hard to magnetize. I'd suggest looking at those! Not a LoW but functions much the same way with a pair - it makes the backbone of the army.

Some interesting thought there guys.

Ishagu, as my trips to Warhammer World are pretty limited I’m hoping to pick something up next weekend at the open day. I might see what new stuff they have on the day but I’m going to spend. It’s burning a hole dontcha know. At this point I’m not that bothered about tactical viability, I’m just after a big cool model. Not quite Titan sized as my warhound rarely gets a run out, maybe once a year.

m0nolith, I already have a good chunk of Custodes including all the Dreadnoughts and I’m afraid the Orion is just a bit beyond reach for this visit.

Tyriks, I have loads of Dreadnaughts I’m definitely in the market for something a bit bigger.

Aye, I know the feeling of the diminishing (or degrading) 30K pool as well.  Which is why I try to set up my armies to be 8E compliant or at least 8E representative.

I do think that the Falchion is still an excellent vehicle in both systems and it looks top notch, but sparing the 1K points called for is a tough pill to swallow in game.  Like Ishagu said, a lot of the FW heavies are pretty points heavy and a little rules light so they aren't worth it from a competitive standpoint, but aesthetically the Falchion, Brass Scorpion, and the Cerastus knight frames are about the same price point and can be used fairly easily.

With that force that you have in the 8E 30K thread, all of them are excellent if you think the Scorpion can fit the Alpha aesthetic.  You have the Spartan so no need for a second, (Otherwise I'd have said maybe consider a Spartan/ and Cerberus.  Bit pricey but not horrible for two super-heavies.    Maybe a Fire Raptor if you're okay with air assets).

Vykes, If I were to get a Scorpion it would be painted for my 40k Iron Warriors and not the Alpha Legion. Good idea with the knights though, I hadn’t really thought about them.

Now that’s more things in the mix to consider, the procrastination continues.....

Scenic bases are awesome!  Hah, should have known Vogon, mate.  Whats in your IVth legion armoury?  (Ishagu's idea of the Atrapos is a pretty excellent one, I personally like the look of the Cerastus Castigator but it's more than just 'a little bit inferior'... still gonna pick one up because that's not the point :P but the Atrapos has a really great unique feel to it).

Edit, which book are the 30K rules for the Atropos? It’s not in my copy of the Mechanicum book.

This is a relatively recent shot but I’ve added a vindicator, Heldrake, Hell Blade and an Iron Circle (counts as Daemon Prince of Khorne with axe and bolter)

The Forgeworld site still has a splash of the Atrapos in its resources I think.  Is that one still up to date for 30K?  (it was a google search after all as I swore it was in the Taghmata ruleset.)  It's a great vehicle killer, and because you have a similar basing for both armies it can pull double duty with its in-between aesthetic.

I love the Falchion for Alpha, but you do have a decent tank hunter in the Venator.  It looks brilliant to me, but it's points pricey which limits its viability.  Plus, it can be a bit overkill in 40K unless you're expecting to fight knight+ class opponents with regularity.

The Iron Warriors feel like they could use a bit of an armour killing boost, and the Brass Scorpion is horrific.  If you like the aesthetic, it's a massively dangerous opponent, it fits with the hellforged demon engine theme, and its a great centerpiece even if you have the Lord of Skulls (and an awesome one at that, kudos mate!  The Iron Warriors all look incredible, and the use of Iron Circle as a Prince with bolter is a great idea.)

I'd say that the Atrapos knight (if its to your liking) is a great choice, Scorpion second, both are good at being centerpieces and kill vehicles well.  But the secondary consideration is that they're both a reasonable amount of points while the Falchion is close to double their cost. So you'll probably get to field the walkers more often.

Thank you all for your helpful advice and different thoughts on my conundrum.

In the end it came down to The model I liked and would be consequently more inspired to paint. It took until the last hour of the day constantly revisiting the cabinets and pondering and it was a close run thing between a Knight Castigator and a Brass Scorpion but I ended up with a Scorpion And very happy I was with my purchase.

Castigator next time though I think

Cheers
