Predators or Venerable Dreads?

How do people feel about Predators vs. Venerable Dreadnoughts with a Lascannon to fill an anti tank role? They are both 180 points.

3 Preds have the nice stratagem but don't benefit from the Chapter Tactic and it is easy for an opponent to kill one of them first round.

Dreads have less wounds but are -1 to hit, and don't worry about getting sucked into close combat as much.

I guess they third options is Las Razorbacks.

-= A wild Iron Hand appears. He uses Merciless Logic! =-

The Venerable Dreadnought is better for Raven Guard by virtue of benefitting from the Chapter Tactics. Most antitank guns have a small rate of fire - usually just one shot, though autocannons of various stripes are an obvious exception - so impacting their chance to hit is a great benefit. They have fewer wounds and don't carry the same amount of guns, true, but they also:

1. Are smaller so can more easily benefit from cover.

2. Have a better ballistic skill.

3. Can provide captain rerolls to surrounding troops via stratagem support.

4. Don't degrade with damage.

5. Even if you swap their fist for a missile launcher, they're not *terrible* in close combat (at least one point of AP would be nice though...)

As much as I hate the Iron Hands I'll agree with Iron Father Ferrum.

I think the Venerable is superior solely because it benefits from our CT. Everything else that was said is icing on the cake, really.

Not degrading is a huge plus, IMO. I love my contemptor but once it starts taking wounds it suffers. I have a venerable dread off sprue and cleaned up. It will be one of the next units I add to my army.

Few quick thing to point out here is that the predator should always take the autocannon over the twin lascannon.  As for the dreads the issue is you almost want to go to forgeworld just to get the mortis dread and go quad lascannon or autocannons and it makes the dread heavy support freeing up elite slots for units that we want to use to complement our scouts.

Personally i am debating getting a ven contemptor and 2 c beam cannons as i think that may cover alot of the new needs we have with heaver units appearing as well as the need to deal with hordes.

^ I did this and fully support the idea ^_^

I'm sure Corax would approve as well.

Oh wait, the ETL has a couple of weeks left :woot:

Won't work. I tried to get the CA LR variants admitted but since they don't have officially associated point value, Semper erred against inclusion.

On one hand, the point value for the Terminus Ultra (without wargear) is listed amongst the changed point values for Adeptus Astartes units in the back of Chapter Approved 2017.

On the other hand, the datasheet for the Terminus Ultra listed earlier in the same book has a big red "open play" stamp on it.

TBH, I'm not sure if I'd allow an 8-Las Land Raider Terminus Ultra which costs a bit less than 4 Lasbacks.

I'm also not sure if I'd not just pick the 4 Lasbacks instead due to target saturation.

But back to topic:

Dreads benefit from chapter tactics and can dish out pain in meelee in a pinch. Also half-a-veteran encased in a walking metal sarcophagus - hard to get more grimdark than that! :happy.:

The pic i posted was a spartan not a land raider just to point out why it had the 8 las cannons.  The problem is that you do not want to get your drops into the silly territory.  Mortis dreads either box or contemptors are more then capable of bringing the firepower required.  The problem with marines atm is if you want good armor your going to forge world to get a decent tank or dread that is capable of providing the support you want.  Vindicator laser destroyers, Sicaran venators, and contemptors are all really good choices but unless your going to see your Chinese uncle its easily a hard pill to swallow cost wise.
