Combi-weapons

So I’ve been thinking a bit about combi-weapons on Veterans. I feel like they open up some interesting possibilities. A few random ideas I came up with:

=[idea 1]=

5 Storm bolters, 2 with storm shields

4-5 combi-plasma

0-1 Vanguard Veteran

Variant on the Intercessor+plasma squad, softer but with more firepower. Combi-plasma can either be just the plasma part if overcharging, or add in the bolter shots for more dakka against softer targets. Could add 1-2 frag cannons. Can be fielded in a Corvus or Teleportarium.

=[idea 2]=

4-5 combi-melta OR combi-plasma

0-1 storm shield + bolter

In a Razorback or in Teleportarium. Suicide squad: Jump out, destroy something, probably die horribly.

=[idea 3]=

5 Bikers

5 Combi-plasma

Here’s where things start to get a bit weird, but just maybe weird enough to work. Deepstrike these bad boys in and you got 20-30 SIA shots + 10 plasma shots slamming into whatever needs killing. T5 and 2 wounds gives some resilience to small-arms fire.

I know the answer in many cases is probably ”Primaris do it better!” but they also make my normal veterans look like the runts of the litter and that bothers me a bit. So, what’s everyone’s thoughts on combi-weapons?

I've been toying with a list that uses three squads with 3 combi meltas, 2 bolters and storm shields, and 1 frag cannon in an assault cannon Razorback. There are a few power weapons tossed in for flavour and as sacrifices in case I want to toss away a power axe and a combi-melta to fit in a second frag cannon instead (or Infernus heavy bolter for extra MWs). It's part of my continuous attempts to make a full Deathwatch army a thing by addressing anti-tank the only way I know how - blasting up the field in a ride, getting as close as possible and deploying a ton of melta into someone's face in a glorious suicide run. The other upside is that I'm not relying on acquiring more storm bolter bits, so I might actually get this built and game ready much faster. I've been pretty limited on builds outside of the friendly games where I can proxy anything I want, so that's a massive benefit

Now I just need to source extra DW combi-meltas

From a list strat standpoint, it focuses on saving CPs by not relying on Teleportarium for Veteran delivery. Likewise, it uses the extra toughness and threat overload of multiple dakka transports alongside mass Intercessors with auto bolt rifles to solve the board presence issue while clearing chaff and sitting on objectives. I like using meltas instead of plasma because I don't feel like the plasma Veterans honestly need any more help dying. Also because I'm a sucker for the meltaguns looks

Keep in mind that while Primaris might be able to do plasma better, they're pigeonholed into one delivery method and a 100 point "tax" on Intercessors unless you want to run them as a Heavy Support option (it's not really a tax, but should be factored into their cost nonetheless). I don't think they technically fit the same tactically flexible role that Veterans can, though they may actually be the safer more efficient option for the most common uses. Even foot slogging they've been a pretty reliable unit for me, so that's important to consider as well, but I will not be dissuaded from trying to make combi weapons a thing.

Want to run them but the bits and there cost. Along with posing options are bleh. Not to mention I'm relying on 4s. And although I trust my hot hands in any dice game. I'll leave the combis to characters who cant be shot at less they are closest. and hitting on 3s. 2s if I choose one. Which would be melta or super plasma. But if you do I say put it on the sergeant and throw a combat shield on him (which doesnt take away from your options) and he'll be your last man standing

After C:DW combi-weapons are almost forgotten (excluding characters) due to Storm bolter which is sad because I feel combi-melta (which I think is the best way to take meltagun) and combi-plasma are still good as anti-AT/anti-elite weapons. You can use them primarily as meltagun/plasmagun and when you are out of range you usually can shoot boltgun part. Boltgun also gives extra shots when shooting overwatch and you can shoot Tempest Shells if needed.

Combi-flamer is another story and I think its useless at the moment. Before dex x3 combi-flamer cost and performance was more or less comparable to x1 Frag Cannon but now when FC is cheaper and C-F is more expensive it's more reasonable just to take FC. Nowdays x1 C-F also costs the same as x3 SB and they have comparable performance when shooting overwatch but everywhere else, that is 95% of the game, x3 SB is way better than C-F Boltgun part. Same applies to Shotguns which have flamer mode too. It is easy to see that while x4 Shotguns costs the same as x1 C-F they are much better choice 99% of the time. So I don't see case for C-F at the moment ...except Captain Artemis's Hellfire Extremis which is both cool and effective.

I like your SB and combi-plasma kill-team idea most but other two ideas are also good.

I think Combi melta/melta fist captain in terminator armour is the better way to deliver melta. Teleports in without using CPs, less shots but more survivable by far and can hide from shot behind other units or charge in to smash stuff. Better chance to hit too.

This guy is part of my insane melta posse with the above ridiculousness
