Anti-Tank

I second the xiphon. It's probably your most efficient choice without re-working other units in your army to support your anti-armor choice. Otherwise, a twin-las ven dread is fantastic... can stand in a corner by itself and fire away at 2+ BS, and won't degrade. A las-back will work in a pinch if you are lacking the points and you already happen to be camping in the back with a support squad w/ HQ unit.

I have managed to do amazing things with my deep striking dual las/CC arm Venerable Dread. It might be the best CP I spend in some games.

I know the Xiphon is definitely popular, and rightfully so, but for an alternative, I sure do like my deep striking Ven Dreads.

It’s not that cheap though. 120 points for a T7 chassis. Easy to kill.

I haven’t tired spamming them, but what’s the point of a deathwatch army if your going to spend half your points on a generic space marine vehicle. They can do better in a SM army.

Hell, for that price I'd rather get a melee threat Termite drill.  Holds more guys, can deep strike them, and makes an all around potent threat.  Might of heroes works pretty well on it as well.

Not so sure about that, but it's definitely food for thought as far as points allocation.  For the most part, if you're going to go pure DW your options fall to Dreadnoughts or RBs, and as many have said the former are a bit more flexible and better return on investment.  It's a shame because I like the idea of MSU Kill Teams rolling up in RBs, but the Transport rules and cost of DW Vets make this an inferior strategy, especially given we can just DS 3 units anyway.

I would like to point out that armoured gun platforms like the Razorback tend to get undervalued a bit due to 8th edition rules killing the utility of transports. In my last game alone though, the humble Razorback:

  • contributed to protecting my combi-melta kill teams from alpha without costing me CP;
  • added a boatload of str 6 shooting that helped punch a pretty substantial hole through a screen;
  • protected some of my kill teams even after they deployed thanks to LoS blocking and eating overwatch;
  • and tied up threats in combat that slowed my opponent's advance

For one squad, its role as a transport only amounted to adding 3'' of extra movement in my first turn (after protecting the kill team inside), but that got me into melta range of an AT threat after an advance - which was slagged early (and was the most insane moment of the game). They were just all around very useful units for me and I'll be trying them out a bit more in my upcoming games.

Of course, I got lucky in that I saw all of those tertiary benefits in one game - that won't always be the case. I'm also already pretty inefficient by using combi-melta (wut) and staying mono-DW (double wut), so take this experience with a grain of salt I suppose.

I played my deathwatch for first time last night. For AT i took the classic combo of a ven dread with TLC and ML and razorback with TLC backed up with a watchmaster for the re rolls. I also took a guard leman russ destroyer tank hunter. I was facing two predators with four LC two maulerfiends and a rhnio full of beserkers.

In this maching the AT was more than enough, with the destroyer one shoting a predator and the ven dread, along with a maleus doctrine stratagem wrecking a maulerfiend turn one.

Im thinking two ven dreads and razorback would be enough in a pure army..

I think dreads are really easy to kill with only eight wounds - if say dark eldar go first it could be lights out. You can only put some many units in deep strike reserve.

Yeah.  I usually prefer to have some long range AT, but I always back it up with melee and close/medium range AT as well.  Jump pack captains of different flavors are my goto.
