Moments of Awesomeness for our Space Wolves

Let's take a break away from 8th Edition blues and put out some fun stuff. Bring back some of the best memories we have playing Space Wolves, regardless of or even in SPITE off whatever issues we perceive is lacking for the space wolves.

For my part, this is my best moment: 2016, my first Foundation 750 points tournament. (beginner's tournament). My rune priest charged a riptide. Dealt a wound. Riptide lost leadership. Tried to run away. Rune Priest swept advanced. Chopped his groin and his legs from underneath him.

And from this moment, Erik Groin Killer was born. And my phobia of Riptides back then was permanently banished.

More recently, in my first game against Guilliman in May 2018, my Bjorn list managed to overcome the 13th son, surprisingly not by close combat, but by heavy flamer.

What about the rest of you? What are your best moments? Doesn't have to be an actual game victory, but could be just sheer hilarity, like a grot taking out a terminator in close combat kind of hilarious. Doesn't have to be so recent either, I hope to hear stories all the way from 1995.

My rune priest also has done most of the noteworthy epic things, hence the avatar hah.

 

Most recent was in 8th where he charged a tervigon to at least contest an objective. I was playing for a tie and the only two models I had left were him and a priest vs about 500 points of nids. He snore him for the full 3 so I decided to go for it, overcharged his pistol all hit and wounded. Woa...this could happen I thought. Charged in all hit wounded... damage roll...5/5/6. One shot, game in the bag.

 

Another one that comes to mind was in 7th when we had weirdstorm (rip) and technomancy he machine flensed a Russ, and used the shrapnel to Swiss cheese the chimera next to it then living lightninged the veterans inside.

LOL, I thought your avatar was a Firehowler due to the blue tatoo markings near his eyes. Didn't realise it was meant to be "glowing psychic eyes". Glad you had fun with the extra spells back then, I always winded up with the useless ones no matter what spell tree I rolled for.

Epic moment 1

Back in 6th edition I was embroiled in a battle with the tyranids. It was an objective game and I had 10 grey hunters camping an objective in terrain. It was a crucial objective for my tyranid opponent. So he piled the shots on eith 2 squads of devil gaunts trying to remove them from the objective and did 30 wounds to my poor grey hunters. Sadly I pick up some dice and began to roll expecting to lose all of the squad. But the dice were with me that day and I saved every single wound. 30 3+ saves in a row. I lost the game but that squad remained weirdly resilient only losing 1 model the whole game.

 

Moment 2

I believe this was early 7th edition (not positive). My friend who originally brought me into the hobby and I decided to take a whole day and have a 9000 point apocalypse game. I brought wolves mono and he brought guard and orks. The deployment really favored the long guns of the guard (long table deployment got rolled) however the true moment of glory belonged to me. He had 3 baneblades in his back field. They were the largest firepower source and a serious target for me. The first couple attempts to get into his back line (a couple clever drop pod tricks including a tune priest conclave with the D weapon vortex power) were unsuccessful in removing any. As most of my force was still struggling to get up the table, I needed to take the pressure off. So I sent in my stormwolf to see if he could remove 1 of the baneblades. I got him in and man did those melta go to work. I blew up 1 bane blade which proceeded to scatter (with the D explosion) on to thebaneblade beside it and the instant death was rolled for the D hit. Thereby annihilating 2 baneblades for the price of 1. Twas trymuly a glorious moment for my space wolves.

He then charged my opponents lord and general and cut him down in close combat before being annilhated by a second volley from the warriors.

 

I lost that game but what a saga!

taking 40+ shots from the most advanced species in the galaxy before proceeding to beat their HQ back into their tomb.

 

Now thats a damned saga.

The moment of awessomnes was Arjac.

In a game against Orks he was able to shoot down a dakkajet with his Hammer. This alone would be cool, but he managed to repeat this moment in the next game against the orks too!

 

He is the ultimate Ani Air Gun !!!

First of all great idea for a thread brother Hawser, if there is one thing that I feel fits this forum it is sharing tales of mighty deeds and sharing the glory of battles won and lost. I have two stand out moments to share, both happened in 7th edition and played a big part in my victory in their games. Firstly I had a wolf priest with a plasma pistol shoot a Dark Eldar Razorwing jetfighter out of the sky before charging into a Talos and smashing it into the ground over two turns of combat with his crozius. Secondly in a battle against the greenskins my Thunderwolf mounted Lord with the Black Death frost axe (relic that added 3 attacks if you were outnumbered, I hope it returns when we get our dex as it turned a lord into a murder machine) charged into a squad of 15 boyz with a power claw armed nob and cut them down on his own over a couple of turns without receiving a scratch in return. Both priest and lord now have a permanent reminder of their deeds modelled onto their respective bases as trophies of their heroic deeds. Don't be shy brothers, let us speak proudly of the might of the Vlka Fenryka !

An early game against CWE when they got their new codex. My opponent was running lots of Windriders and a Wraithknight (great in 7th but not so hot in 8th as it turned out).

 

He got careless with his Wraithknight and left him in charge range of Bjorn who promptly tore it in half in a single round of combat. Bjorn has been in every army I have fieled since. :biggrin.:

In my 3rd game ever as part of the escalation league I played my first knight.

Shield dreads don't usually have many things that can threaten them but this beast was a challenge

Bad deployment roll meant my 2 dreads had to traverse the long side of the table but we made it to him after 3 or 4 turns of advancing.

Dread #1 died from focus fire of the army but Dread #2 charged the knight then dropped 14 or so wounds on him and the knight fell to tier 3 as a result

Unfortunately my dread failed miserably the following combat round and didn't do any wounds but we don't talk about that much anymore...

Then there was the time Bjorn and his friends were surrounded by Tyranids

At the end of the slaughter my 2 shield dreads and Bjorn remained while numerous genestealers and tyrants were ripped to shreds

When I think back on my epic moments I'm seeing a theme here...

Some time ago, in a HoR Killteam Game, my outflanking Grey Hunter entered the battlefield in a rapid range of enemy Boss Meganob who has 2 wounds left. , 2x6 To Hit, 2x6 To Wound, 2x1 Save, failed FnP. So begins the saga of still unrivaled sniper-champion of my Great company - Orm "The blind". From that time if i need one guaranteed bolter shot on 24" - it's his job.

So three epic Sagas to be sung here, all from 8th as I just jumped back in during end of 7th beginning of 8th.

 

Ranek Shadowbreaker:

This normal Rune Priest earned his name (and the right to be a counts as Njal) in a game versus Tyranids. A Hive Tyrant came in and starting doing work on my flank so he runs over. Tyranid turn the Hive Tyrant smites which is let through but then tries to catalyst. Ranek stops it with a 12. My Turn after combats my "unit" (one guy left) in the fight with the Hive Tyrant falls back and we enter the psychic phase. I start by casting smite which on another 12 goes off despite the Shadow in the Warp (I wonder where my name idea came from >.<). I roll my wounds to myself, and get a one. I then roll my wounds for the Hive Tyrant and get a 6 taking down his last six wounds. Feeling like a boss I decide to toss a Jaws of the Wolf World on his 2 wound remaining Tyrant on foot getting another 12. I roll to wound myself, and roll a one. I roll the 2d6 on the Tyrant and get a smashing 12 and a chasm opens up eating the monster alive.

 

Bjorn Heljumper:

So this was just a regular old Battle Guard Leader but now he has been promoted to the Wolf Lord of my Great Company. At the time I was running few named characters and decided to give them all Jump Packs. I gave him the Krakenbone Sword which will be relevant later. We are playing an Ork Megabattle at one of my local shops and there is a wing of Dakka Jets mixed with other flyers moving down the board and creating havoc. By the time they get to my area of the board the Big Mek Dakka Jet has 2 wounds left and the Blitza Bomma Has 2 wounds left. both are near each other as they are trying to stay alive with the 5+ Kustom Forcefield. SO I decide, screw it I will try and charge them after failing to do anything with the small amount of shooting I had available to hit them. I charge both with Bjorn (not that one) and he takes not even a scratch in overwatch. I split my four attacks with 2 on the Big Mek and 2 on the Blitza going for maximum carnage. I roll my hits and hit with everything (all on 2s). I roll to wound and get a 5 against each and a 3 against each (weird dice). Using the relic re-roll I re-roll the 2s into 6s taking both jets down. The guy controlling them (a very good friend) laughs and rolls his explode checks, and gets two sixes! So we measure out and the only units near are all the other Jets (2 Dakka and another Blitza bomber) and Bjorn. He lets me roll for his flyers and he rolls for Bjorn. He rolls two 1s which he command re-rolls into 1s again. I roll for each flyer two dice (they were in really tight formation) and manage to get just enough to kill them all. He then rolls for their explode checks, and rolls 6s again! Thankfully only 1 is in range of Bjorn and the other two catch a unit of Boyz. He rolls again for Bjorn and gets another 1, leaving him on one wound left! I roll and get two 1s on the Boyz so nothing much there. 

 

Basically he jumped up onto one flyer, smashed it apart and as he jumps away to the other one it detonates clipping the two flyers near it. He finishes the other one and as he jumps down amidst the flames, fuel, wreckage and carnage and super hero lands with 1 wound left. Seeing as in my mind he literally jumped into hell and back I decided it was a fitting name. Also conveniently the Wolf Lord I was fielding died allowing the promotion to occur.

 

Bjorn the Fell-Handed:

Same game as when other Bjorn was named (The reason I chose Bjorn as the first name for my new Wolf Lord). My direct opponent that game had a Stompa and lots of Boyz. Orks got first turn as they were attacking a Hive City which we were defending the outskirts of. He moves everything up including the Stompa and I see him edging closer to Bjorn. This is my first time fielding him and he was the Warlord with the +1 attack trait. I knew his stats on paper so I just as a friendly gesture told him about Bjorn. He just says "It will be fine, I doubt Bjorn will do much to the Stompa." At that point it was a challenge accepted as Bjorn stomps towards the Stompa. Turn 2 we are close enough for charges and he fails to charge with the Stompa. My Turn 2 Bjorn walks up along with a squad of Wulfen coming in from the other flank for support. They had just minced the Nob squad that charged them and were raring to get a piece of the giant tin can. Bjorn goes in first and the Wulfen follow. I choose Bjorn to attack first, getting all my hits and all my wounds which were 7 in total from charging and the Wulfen. My opponent is just sitting there stunned as I say AP -4, D6 damage (as he was told before the Stompa moved close). All he says is "This will hurt but there is no way he can kill him in one turn, right?" Famous last words there as I roll my wound dice and get five 6s and two 5s taking the beast down in one Round of combat. We both stare dumbfounded at the dice, at each other, back at the dice. He roll rolls to explode and does not. 

 

After that fight is the fight in which Bjorn Heljumper did his work and I felt seeing the Stompa gutted by Bjorn the Fell-Handed had inspired him to his great feat. And this is the reason that I take Bjorn in any big battles. He absolutely wrecks big scary monsters in the face.

 

Shorter story of Bjorn recently. We were doing an impromptu megabattle which was a re-work of the Necromunda mission Monster Hunters. The monster had 30 wounds, T8 with a 3+ invulnerable (seemed reasonable with the number of Knights and big guns on the board). Monster "spawns" next to Bjorn as some Grey Hunters are gunned down. Bjorn turns towards it and says"The bigger they are, the harder they fall" and smashes it to bits in a round of combat (there were a lot of failed 3+ invulnerable saves).

I have kept a file from the old 5th Edition 'Achievement Unlocked' blog post so there are many dates of many achievements but I took time to write three 'commendations' in the file. No idea what edition but they are dated....

 

2-8-15 In one of the most spectacular displays of blood claw insane bravado Blood Claw Niklas and his pack went on a Tyranid cleansing spree. In an effort to both impress Ulrik the Slayer and follow his instructions Niklas went on to use his power fist to crush the skull of a nameless Tyranid Carnifex as well as putting that same power fist to smash the life from Old One Eye himself. Made all the more impressive was that both Ulrik and the assigned Wolf Guard Pack Leader never needed to engage themselves directly in any of the melee combats.

 

2-28-15: Udo and ‘Half’, as the only members of their pack left standing after drop podding in DEEP into the enemy deployment zone, charge Shadowsun and a full unit of bodyguards and drones. Killing one drone in combat causes Shadowsun and the unit’s morale to completely fail. In the ensuing chaos Udo and H’alf unleash their fury and brutally slay the commander and her entire unit.  They finish the mission holding the Tau technology secure against a Riptide outside the building pointlessly smashing itself against 2 wolf drop pods outside.

 

1-10-16: Revered Dreadnought Ric faces off with a Knight Titan. He not only kills the Titan by doing 4 hull points of damage to the Super Heavy Walker but the ensuing catastrophic explosion kills 2 squads of Word Bearer Chaos Space Marines and a Chaos Dreadnought as well. His “Can-Do” attitude essentially removed half of the enemy forces on the planet.

The Wolves had not been faring well during the campaign as of late, bringing most of the Great Company to bear on Prandium Majoris they felt that the Dragonflys chapter was broken and fleeing. Having had experienced this group before the Wolves were confident when following the rag-tag, mismatched Dragonfly fleet to the lush fields of Herephon II. OVERCONFIDENCE turned out to be the instance. The Wolves were BADLY beaten twice on the planet and while their last engagement had suddenly ended with neither army in control of the field of battle, the Wolves had definitely taken the worst of the fight.

 

When Ironpriest Audun began picking up unusual energy signals in the outer ruins of Hive City Crawford Heights Gamma (CHG) he reported it to his lord. “An excellent opportunity presents itself here Audun, if you’ve picked this up then The Mechanicums auguries will be detecting it as well.” Audun responded “A trap then?” “We shall hunt as if from the trees old friend” grinned Flair. The Wolf Lord then deployed with a force that could react and move as quickly as possible. Those that were less fleet of foot would be joining the battlefield in Drop Pods. Nothing is faster than firing your first shots onto the battlefield from BEHIND your enemy. The left flank would come up, the right flank would come up and in the end the Jaws of The Wolf would close on the enemy’s neck.

 

The left flank would be a Speeder, The Bow of Russ (Whirlwind), 3 packs of Fenrisian Wolves and an incoming drop pod. This was the jab. The knockout blow would be the right flank with the Wolf Lord, Iron Priest, a second Whirlwind, Thunderwolves and a second drop pod containing the ‘Inquisitor’ begrudgingly attached to the Lost Wolves. Lastly a third drop pod in reserve to come in wherever needed with newly tested Blood Claws and a Wolf Guard to keep them in line.

 

JPM1 Stinks

“So much noise, and STINK” mumbled Brennan, the leader of the Thunderwolf Cavalry. “Silence” was the signal Flair issued. The plan was good but the left flank was GOING to take a beating and the trap had to be sprung so as to provide too many targets for the enemy shooting to be effective. In that moment the first of the Leman Russ Tanks broke across the boundary set as the ‘Go’ point to spring. Given the densely packed structures in the ruined hive city of CHG that the battle tanks were moving at cruising speed caught the wolves off-guard, that and the enemy forces seemed to know exactly where every unit was. “Foul Auguries and sensors” exclaimed Flair, then he shouted “FOR RUSS, THE ALLFATHER AND OUR HONOR!!!” and the battle began.

 

JPM1 guardsmen

The guardsmen firing from the tanks may have had good data but their marksmanship was deadly. In the first salvo 2 units of Fenrisian wolves were cut to shreds. With only a single wolf remaining their faithfulness exceeded every measure of expectation. Not only did the 2 survivors stay on the field but they actually charged forward after their packs were shot to pieces. The Vanquisher fired on ‘Beautiful Bobby’ the second whirlwind, the round SLAMMING into the hull and removing a huge chunk of ceramite and damaging some targeting systems, she wouldn’t be moving or shooting for a while. The Battle Cannons massive blasts killed one Cyberwolf brought by the Ironpriest and another Fenrisian wolf jumped into the air to protect Flair and his own Thunderwolf.

 

JPM3 Had your Fun

“You’ve had your fun” muttered Flair. “DROP PODS INCOMING!” resounded through every Space Wolve vox bead on the field. The first pod SLAMMED into the ground. The ancient, giant, Lucius pattern pod blasting hundreds of pounds of dirt and debris into the air as its massive, oversized thrusters slowed it’s decent to a few hundred feet per second. Though the drop pod doors flew from the pod as the explosive bolts detonated, nothing but a blast of superheated melta hissed through the door and into the front hull of the Leman Russ Incinerator. Whether it was too much interference or the work of the Mars-Ryza artisans who crafted her hull, the shot struck home and did nothing…

 

JPM4 Right Flank

On the right flank another drop pod hurtled towards earth, blasted into the surface behind 4 Tanks and right next to a squad of Skitarii. As the doors exploded 6 Wolf Guard and the burnished silver power armor of the Ordo Hereticus inquisitor jumped from the pod. Lining up on the nearest Leman Russ the squad fired every combi-melta shot it had into the thin rear armor of the main battle tank. It erupted in a massive ball of fire. Spectacular, yet harmless, the victory wasn’t as fruitful as hoped as the tank was operating solo, leaving its suspected squadron mate too far away for another volley of shots. The Drop Pods machine spirit, inspired by the exploding tank fired its Storm Bolter into the rear  armor of the second Leman Russ tank. A billow of flame and smoke caused the tank to buck and jerk as some vital system within had been wounded. The inquisitor looked to his right as the Skitarii began slowly turning their weapons onto the squad of howling Space Wolf Heros. As he did a loud whistling noise came from the south and a brilliant flash and heat wave explosion nearly blinded him. The Bow Of Russ had fired one of its Vengeance missiles at the Skitarii warriors killing 4 and disorienting the others.

 

JPM5 Speeders

The Land Speeders both flew up either side of the field locating and neutralizing the sensors being used by the Adeptus Mechanicus to electronically survey the battle field. With these objectives under control, as well as the two that the lone Fenrisian Wolves had located the enemy would have much less of a tactical advantage. Flair and the Iron Priest had moved through the buildings carefully and were poised to make a charge at two of the tanks that had continued to rumble forward instead of dealing with the enemy at their rear.

The Hydra on the left flank continued moving forward and left the Incinerator behind, the commander knowing that its AA guns were going to be of little use on ground targets wanted the skimmer interfering with the battlefield sensors destroyed and the Hydra was more than a match for its light frame. The Hydra fired everything at the land speeder. The speeder pilot had made note of the location of the AA tank while moving flat out onto his objective. He had placed the frail skimmer such that the remains of a large wall would obscure his vehicle from the most logical point of attack by the Hydra. His tactics worked. The Hydra did manage to damage the speeder such that it would not take ANY more damage and remain viable but for now its combat effectiveness was not affected.

 

The commander of the Leman Russ Incinerator knew where the Lucius pod had come down, he knew there would be a Dreadnought in there and he KNEW that it was armed to obliterate his tank. He ordered the Volkite weapon pointed 5 degrees off the corner of the building to his left and opened fire with everything. When the roar of the cannon died there was nothing but settling dust. No smoke, no explosion, not even the smell of burned ceramite, as the dust settled more the commander could see that somehow all 5 of the Volkite charges had done… nothing.  At that moment the Space Wolf Dreadnought known as ‘Ole’ strode down the ramps of the Drop Pod while the Land Speeder formerly holding an objective on that side had turned its care over to one of the remaining Fenrisian wolves. The commander told his brave men to brace for impact as both Space Wolf vehicles lined up for Melta shots at near point-blank range. Again the blessings of the Omnisiah were upon this vehicle. Both melta shots hit the tank, neither melta shot was able to even knock the paint from the front of the tank. To a man the entire crew began shouting and cheering. Other than dying it was the last thing they did. Ole assaulted the tank with such fury and rage that his Great Wolf Claw didn’t stop bashing the vehicle until there was no doubt that every living thing and its machine spirit were completely extinguished.

 

On the right the Skitarii were beginning to realize that 6 Wolf Guard and an Inquisitor were close enough to engage them in hand to hand combat. Odds were calculated again and again with the same determination… these beings must be shot to death at once! The warriors unloaded everything they had into the wolves. Their power armor and lightning fast reflexes keeping all but one on their feet. That was when the Techpriest Dominus turned his attention to the threat. When he was finished shooting only 3 wolves remained. The Inquisitor had been mostly protected by his armor. Mostly. He had taken a brutal shot to the torso that had damaged the armor enough he could see his own blood beginning to leak through. The repair and stimulation systems of the power armor work working to the point that he felt nothing but he knew that he wouldn’t be able to take another shot like that and see his mission through. As the wolves shouted their battle cry he couldn’t help but add his voice to the shout and into the squad of mechanized men they went.

 

As the Wolf Guard were yelling, Alric Flair and Audun the Ironpriest both charged different Leman Russ tanks. The larger tread and Vanquisher cannon were a better fit for the Ironpriest, his Thunderhammer and the Servo-arm on his back. The already damaged battle tank would NOT stand up to the overwhelming strength of a Wolf Lord, his Thunderwolf and the ancient Krakenbone Swords uncanny ability to slice through the hardest armor. When it was over, the Ironpriest and shattered the Vanquisher cannon and smashed in one side of the Leman Russ, but the beast still lived. The main battle tank attacked by the Flair was naught but a smoking hull full of dead men as he and Audun moved back into a safer position.

 

The Inquisitor looked at the Wolf Guard fighting tooth and nail trying to win a saga and reclaim their honor. He had been on every battlefield with these Astartes since the top of the campaign. Initially a Wolf Guard Battle Leader that made him sit behind an Aegis Defense line to be safe. He had also been allowed onto the battlefield with Blood Claws and eventually the main force of the Wolves, Grey Hunters. Things must either be going very well or very badly as every engagement he was brought closer and closer to battle. Now was the time to show them what he was made of. Locating an ‘Alpha’ he used his power armor to channel a rather foully worded challenge to the Skitarii. Watching the way he stopped fighting and made his way to the Inquisitor must have worked. In a display of martial skill that can only be accomplished when your enemy is not as strong and martially inferior, the Inquistor promptly shot the Alpha in the ‘stomach’ with his pistol. When the Skitarii doubled over he held his Null Rod high for all of the Wolves to see and used it to smash the mostly mechanical head from the warriors body. The Wolves Howled. They then hacked more of the Skitarii apart but no matter how many fell the Skitarii would not break.

 

The Techpriest Dominus could not allow the continued wanton destruction of machine spirits to continue. The Wolves now controlled all of the battlefield sensors limiting his data input to only what could be collected locally, 4 of the 6 tank chassis had been destroyed and a fifth crippled and nearly dead. The Whirlwinds had been firing on the second squad of Skitarii and that nearly useless Inquisitor that kept braying ‘it’s a trap, it’s a trap’… she sounded like a Bothan, whatever THAT was. Repairing the Vanquisher cannon would eliminate the accursed, oath breaking Ironpriest and then he could rally his troops and finish the battle off. Sure, the Wolves hadn’t lost a full unit yet but their numbers were down and statistics and analysis showed that this battle was far from over.

 

JPM6 Battle Commander

The Battle commander “leading” the fight was overwhelmed with gratefulness when the Leman Russ systems showed that the Vanquisher Cannon was back online. “It’s about time those damned automatons did something to help” he thought. “FIRE AT THAT MECHANIC ON THE WOLF! He ordered. Whether it was the repair or a terrified gunner… the Vanquisher cannon missed. The guardsman firing the lascannon however was not so unfortunate or timid. The mechanical front legs of the Thunderwolf melted into slag as the 14 foot tall wolf crashed to the ground. While Audun was standing back on his feet and bracing to charge the tank again the Techpriest blasted over his vox caster “ENOUGH” and stepped from behind the shattered vehicle. The torrent of fire and rage that he put into the Ironpriest was alarming and while still living inside of his mangled, bloodied armor, Audun was not to fight any more this day.

 

It was at about this time that the third drop pod acquired a signal from the irritated Thunderwolf Cavlary Squadron holding one of the battlefield objectives on the right side. The Drop Pod blasted into the earth, the doors blew off and the Blood Claws within followed the orders already given to them. They immediately made best speed onto the objective and unwillingly waited the rest of the battle out.

 

JPM7 With The

With the immediate responsibility addressed by the Blood Claws the Thunderwolves FLEW up the battlefield and charged into ongoing fight between the Wolf Guard and Skitarii. With the first Wolf into the fray killing one Skitarii when his wolf landed on the unsuspecting cyborg, his Wolf Claw making short work of the rest.

 

JPM8 Ole

The Dreadnought Ole, finished with the Incinerator, charged on with his rage unslaked. His sensors detected an Onager Dunecrawler just meters away from his position. In his fury he did take the time to do a full scan of the area, when the Skitarii Vanguard opened up on his side armor with their remaining strength of plasma his armored form took too much damage, he fell that day but he does serve the Emperor and Russ yet. 

 

JPM9 With The

Hearing the sounds of the falling walker in his vox bead and seeing his friend and another Thunderwolf maimed Alric Flair made a vow that the Tank and its crew that were responsible for this were all going to die, today, BADLY. True to his word Wolf Lord Alric Flair saw that the vow was fulfilled.

 

Brennan, from atop his wolf mount, had formed up his Thunderwolves and yelled to the Inquisitor below and the remaining Wolf Guard, "Come Inquisitor, there are yet more impudent souls, as yet un-enlightened!"  Brennan looked at the bloodied Inquisitor and said “Remove your helmet and give us your name warrior”. The seals hissed as the airtight environment of the power armor gave way. “MacGregor” said the Inquisitor, “Kayden MacGregor”. The Thunderwolves and Wolf Guard said together, as one, “Hail, and well met Kayden MacGregor”.

 

The Wolves formed up on Flair to assess the battlefield damage. They hadn’t expected the Inquistor and Techpriest, the Dunecrawler and the remaining Vanguard to fall back. It made sense, but the Wolves were hoping for more combat, more glory and more battle! Audun and his Thunderwolf would be made whole again under Wolf Priest and Ironpriest ministrations. Ole would need extensive repair and refit and there were nearly a dozen dead or wounded Fenrisian wolves. THIS was a small price to pay for such a victory. As the cheer went up from the 7th Lost Wolves, Kayden MacGregor couldn’t help but think “This is one battle, not yet the time to celebrate victory  Fenrisians”.

@ Gemini - sorry man, the wall of text is too big, will try read it later. But if I can advise, try to shorten it down to the moment of awesome, not the whole STORY. Battle reports are good but hard to read without pictures or diagrams of the battlefield. Even the story was kinda long winded.

@ Saint Ragnar, I really love your crazy flying wolf story. I frequently put my leaders on jump pack myself but so far they haven't killed anything of note yet, which is not what their job is, but nice to know it paid off for you.

First of all great idea for a thread brother Hawser, if there is one thing that I feel fits this forum it is sharing tales of mighty deeds and sharing the glory of battles won and lost. I have two stand out moments to share, both happened in 7th edition and played a big part in my victory in their games. Firstly I had a wolf priest with a plasma pistol shoot a Dark Eldar Razorwing jetfighter out of the sky before charging into a Talos and smashing it into the ground over two turns of combat with his crozius. Secondly in a battle against the greenskins my Thunderwolf mounted Lord with the Black Death frost axe (relic that added 3 attacks if you were outnumbered, I hope it returns when we get our dex as it turned a lord into a murder machine) charged into a squad of 15 boyz with a power claw armed nob and cut them down on his own over a couple of turns without receiving a scratch in return. Both priest and lord now have a permanent reminder of their deeds modelled onto their respective bases as trophies of their heroic deeds. Don't be shy brothers, let us speak proudly of the might of the Vlka Fenryka !

thanks for vote of confidence. I like it when in the end it comes down to that one shot or one wound that either saves the day or makes the game hilarious. Just wish I had better stories about my stupid Thunderwolves. Sorry, not to call anyone who uses them stupid, it's just that my luck with TWC has been abysmal to the point I almost never use them in my games EVER. The best thing they ever did for me back in 7th ed was rend a Furioso Dreadnought to death. After that, I can't make a SS save to save my life.

A reminder to all, let's not limit our moments of awesome to our infantry and characters. Much as I hate to admit it, even the dumb dogs can potentially save the day. Actually come to think of it, Bjorn isn't the only vehicle that can be awesome. For example...

This Razorback I think weathered 4 Lascannon shots at it and survived with 3 wounds! Damn, gotta remember to bling up this little metal box, give it some smoke launchers and the coiler cables to make it nicer. Not sure how to name vehicles though.

Man, I wonder if it's that I can't remember my awesome sagas or that they just didn't happen :unsure.:  ...I should write them down somewhere.

 

I've got two that I can remember as I have the photos for them and they are relatively recent (8th).

 

1. Engir Krakendoom holding off a Swarmlord for 2 turns so my Grey Hunters in the room next door can take the objective for the win. Neither of these behemoths inflicted a single wound on the other (must try harder!).

2. Played the mission where you count the surviving models to see who wins at the end of the game. My opponent had a Tervigon, he didn't seem to realise it but I knew that this thing was worth about 50 or so victory points to him if it lived the whole game, so it had to go down fast. My army was split in two. Gunnar Redmoon leading a load of Long Fangs in my back field and Ragnar Blackmane leading a drop pod assault on the Tyrannids (nuts).

 

He drops in and survives two assault phases of this...

You can't see from the photos but it was a 15 man unit of genestealers and gargoyles and a hive crone.

 

Half my army was wiped out in the end (the drop assault half) and half were completely untouched (the backfield half). I didn't manage to kill the tervigon and we ran out of time. I lost by a model or two on the count.

 

But I knew that after he had survived those rounds of combat I wouldn't mind what happened after I had made all those 4+ inv saves.

 

P.S. Arjac also survived a very similar scenario just out of shot.

This has been great reading these posts. Takes me back to a game i played a while ago tanks and dreads only. My mate was blood angels it got to the second round and he was in a position to charge my land raider acillies with his levitation and death company dread this land raid was down to 7 wounds and i was hoping that at least one would fail a charge. So first the leviathan dread which was down to 6 wounds. First over watch rolls and get 2 sixes ok so now thinking great might be able to take it down another lvl now to the wound rolls 1 wound gets though. He rolls his save due to the meltas need his 3+ invul and rolls a one his last cp rerolls and gets a 2 so now im thinking sweet one lvl down roll my wounds and up comes the magic 6 -1 leviathan now he had also declared his dc dread up next and i get 2 though wounds on this one and due to the -4 no save avaible roll the 2 and get a 6 and 5 bye bye second dread. My land raider is now called Overwatch

I haven't had a game since I moved away from dallas 3 years ago, but before I left I did play against a guy with 5 imperial knights once or twice. In one of those games my Thunderwolf mounted Iron Priest landed the last hammer blow that dropped a knight and then survived the blast as it scattered away from him. Good times.

Awesome topic. I don't have a lot of time to reply (or even put much thought into all the battles over the years), but the first thing that popped into my head was a four way game from way back in 3rd or maybe 4th Ed.

 

Square battlefield, one army deployed in each corner. Game was to retrieve the relic located on top of the center mountain we built, then have an infantry model carry it back off the table at your deployment edge. My mech wolves were Bjorn (even though he temporarily lost his name in our 3rd Ed codex), some GHs in rhinos, and a vindicator, versus jump pack blood angels, stealer heavy nids, and IG.

 

As fate would have it, one rhino and the vindicator immobilize themselves in my deployment zone trying to drive out on turn one. Leaves me Bjorn and a few GHs brawling in the middle of the table. As you can imagine, this was total chaos, as we had three and four way melees on the slopes of this mountain while some long ranged IG rained templates down on it all. Eventually the blood angels got over to the IG and wrecked havoc. Bjorn smashed basically everything in the center, and the tide looked like it was going the wolves way.

 

But then some lucky stealers got into the back of him and imobilized Bjorn, and the nid player (my brother) got a bit too confident. While the last few grunts for each side slugged it out, Bjorn's ac was still able to mow down the remnants of the relic-carrying nids and wipe them out one move from their victory.

 

Unfortunately, he was still unable to stop the sole BA model left, a priest of some sort who had been the lone survivor from fighting in the IG deployment zone. After finishing the final GH and random catachans fighting it out, he scooped up the relic and headed for home.

 

The day appeared to be won, but he casually took a slight detour around the central mountain, and (I had been waiting all game for this) happened to walk 23.9" from the immobile and completely forgotten about vindicator. It fired true for the first and only time all game, and blasted the blood angel to bits, leaving only an immobile Bjorn looking on as the relic was dropped and left abandoned on the field for an epic and memorable four way tie.

During the Eye of Terror campaign I would run two 10 man squads of wulfen and a Wolf lord with twin lightning claws and Mark of the wulfen. I can't recall exactly how many units those 3 wiped out during that time but the body count is high. They were rightly feared in melee combat!

The two moments of awesomeness that I can currently recall involve my only axe/shield dread.

 

1) Playing against Chaos space marines, more or less my first game with the dread. Open war cards had my army deployed in the center surrounded by my opponent. At some point a Helldrake exposed itself enough for the dread to get just within charging distance. The Helldrake's overwatch bathed my dread in fire, but the shield took the brunt of the damage. Dread then makes the 11" charge and cuts down the Helldrake in one round of combat.

 

2) Playing against Chaos again, my opponent has a Greater Brass Scorpion at the center of his army. My dread is lined up directly opposite. The scorpion stomps forward and claims a hill in the middle of the table. It lobs a couple of shots at the dread that apparently had the potential to melt it into a pile of molten scrap metal were it not for the blizzard shield holding strong. In my turn the dread marches forward defiantly, once again just within charge range and once again rolls hot to make the charge. He then proceeds to chop away over the next 2 battle rounds, single handedly bringing down the monstrous demon engine. The resulting explosion destroys a rhino full of berserkers, a hellbrute, and damages several other enemy units & characters, with the victorious dread taking minimal damage. He continued to leave a trail of carnage in his wake until he was finally brought down by a lone berserker's krak grenade to the backside.

 

I haven't thought about a name for him before, but now I'm thinking Longstride Chaosbane would be appropriate.

Longstride isn't a bad name considering he makes his long charges. Great moment there, so far the only thing I've killed is a hell turkey with my axe shield dread.
