Always check the Shadows
All, As a relatively inexperienced commander of the 15th Legion, but someone who has played 40K since the Purple book landed, I am after your advice and wisdom. On Friday my fledgling force faces its second outing, a series of friendly 2000 point games at Warhammer World. My list is going to be a fairly standard force, Rubrics, Cultists, Sorcerers and Princes with some heavy support and Spawn but without Tzaangors, as i haven't got round to buying any yet. However I will be at Warhammer world so will have access to the Forgeworld shop. So, if you could buy one thing from Forgeworld to enhance your force what would it be and why? My first thought was a Leviathan, but with what load out, but then i thought get a Knight to ally in a knight and some Armigers. I am happy to consider anything i just don't know where to start. Thanks in advance Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/349296-thousand-sons-and-forge-world/ Share on other sites
The Yncarne
I think I’d snag a spartan assault tank. I don’t have the time or money for a knight and I love the model. If you get the leviathan consider two flux bombards. Always check the Shadows
Apologies all, just found the topic on page 5 which is very similar. Options probably narrowed down to Leviathan, Spartan, Sicaran or a Contemptor of sorts as just remembered i have a Fire Raptor still to build! yergerjo
From FW I use a sicaran venator with 2xLaz along with 2 4xLaz Predators to do my armor cracking. Great thing to Prescience or to use the move w/no penalty strategem. Tyriks
My only FW models right now are a legion praetor because it looks cool and two Leviathans with butcher cannons (using storm cannon model). They are amazing. They regularly wreck tanks (immolators, repressors, predators, battle wagons, all kinds of tanks) through weight of fire and a little Veterans of the Long War love. The penalty to Leadership made them great against a Freeblade Dominus, too; made him fail his burdens a few times. And with 16 shots if you have to shoot them at something like Ork Boys or cultists you still don't feel like you're wasting firepower. ImNegan
I have a leviathan with cyclone melta/soulburner ribudkin. I find the weapon underwhelming, but it can take a lot of punishment. I'd defo recommend full close combat or butcher cannons if you get one. Contemptor is great, but again,I have a plasma cannon/ecto plasma load out on it and I'd recommend a different weapon load out on that too. Both great models to build and paint though. I've a spartan too which is just great all round, but a lot of points and a bullet magnet! I've run a knight a couple of times and that's always been fun to play with. But suffers the bullet magnet issues again. Running them both together against a tank heavy guard list was a really fun game for us both. Thanks in advance I'd go with a Contemptor or Decimator. Both are pretty frightening in the right configuration and the Decimator can work with all of the Tzeentch Daemon buffs we have access to. Always check the Shadows
Well, I ended up buying the Forgeworld Index and have held off on purchasing anything for now. The staff at Warhammer World tried t persuade me to go for an Osiron Contemptor and go counts as. I resisted. Raven1
Well, I ended up buying the Forgeworld Index and have held off on purchasing anything for now. The staff at Warhammer World tried t persuade me to go for an Osiron Contemptor and go counts as. I resisted. GW has pushed that since it wasn't included in the index and reinforced it when they announced they would port Adeptus Custodes rules from 30k to 40k. I mean it can't be that hard. I'm not going for it for two reasons. Armrigers are awesome and for the price you can at least 2 for the price of one. Two I don't want a stupid "count-as" I don't even need a dread with "All is Dust" (which would be awesome) I want a psychic dread. Prot
Yes I am using Armigers in my last games and love them. This has solved so many problems for me. What Forgeworld unit do I use? How do I crack armour? Etc etc. I own a Decimator with a claw and a Soulburner. I just can’t convince myself to field it. I ordered it the same week they upped the Soulburner cost. I don’t know exactly what the Thousand Sons can buff on FW Dread type vehicles like the Decimator but what I find is the Knight line is free from really requiring additional buffs. Even just being able to move and shoot is such a nice bonus compared to many of the borked chaos stuff that gets penalized ( any chaos unit with BS 4 and Daemon engine should be able to move and shoot without penalty in my opinion. ). The Yncarne
The decimator has the following key words: daemon daemon engine vehicle It can benefit from the following stratagems: blasphemous machines warp flame gargoyles I left out daemonforge because that affects 'daemon vehicle'. It can benefit from the following powers: flickering flames boon of change I look forward to using both war glaives and helverins, but I'm not rushing in assembling them. Are Verlo
It is worth adding that the FW-1KS units will be able to reroll 1’s to hit when in range of models with the lord of the thousand sons aura/DP aura. Prot
Yes those are good selling points and great considerations, but I have very little experience with FW units because they are expensive, and somewhat limited in events here. So in my case I admit aside from some old school units like the fire raptor and Sicaran, etc, I really have little experience there. But I will say the Hellverin and the Warglaive seem to be very economic chicest that fill some serious gaps. However those “buffs” etc that can be used to greater effect on the FW units. I really don’t get a chance to see many in action here. BoomWolf
Dude, there is no such thing as "daemon vehicle", they all have the two keywords separate. Decimator can indeed enjoy Daemonforge. Its also considered heretic astardes, and as such can enjoy warptime (if you took a cc build i guess?), precience (why though?), diabloic strength (nice, but better targets out there.) Also the general weaver of fate, glamour and temporal manipulation, but he isn't a really great target for any of these. the main issue with the guy, one of it's more popular loadouts-the soulburner, gains less than you'd want from daemonforge as it does not roll to wound, nor does it gain all that much from our psychic might. Though I personally prefer a more budget approach, given that its hardly any more durable than your run-of-the-mill helbrute (5++ is nice against heavy AT, but does nothing against smaller guns, and regeneration only matters if you survive the turn-and if you are too decked out, you'll be targeted.) Honestly, I find it hard to pick a loadout I like for him. Double guns skips out his CC potential (he's fast, and has 5 attacks base), but the claw seems overpriced (flamer's fault. it really meshes poorly as a heavy) and his CC isn't all that incredible even with it. a regular helbrute can outclass it it punchiness. Butcher cannons seems nice, but its AT strength with mere -1 ap 2D and a special rule that only really helps against infantry, and not amazing range so you lose accuracy on the move (and again, 10" move on a non-moving platform?) C-beam takes it to the extreme, but unless you play apoc the table isn't really big enough to fully take advantage of this. forces you to be totally immobile too, and we all know the problem with single shot weapons-they miss. Soulburner is awesome, but seems to me to be rather too expensive and too much of a target magnet to be viable. its a total glass cannon build to run dual petard. Finally dual laser build, the cheapest out there clocking at mere 140, but doesn't really bring anything exciting to the table when we got inferno bolters everywhere had we wanted them. I just really can't get hyped over it no matter how hard I try. Also, for people mentioning contemptors, fire raptors and whatnot: Rule of law with playing chaos-if loyalists has a version of the model, its 99% of the time safe to dump it, as their version is outright superior by being cheaper, same cost yet superior stats, more options and FAR more support abilities to match up with. Also applies to knights. sure we got some weapon choice versatility-but they got actual chapter tactics (and pretty good ones too) and tons of stratagems, relics, etc. our knights really don't. we can't compete on the knights field. You want to play chaos and compete-focus entirely on units that IoM has nothing that is directly compared to them, as you'll lose the matching 99% of the time. Heck, even my favorite sky hunter the xiphon, the loyalist version is cheaper while having another wound, a better missile rack and the only thing it gives up is a slight mobilty issue (easy to overcome when your "shot" gun is 48") Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/349296-thousand-sons-and-forge-world/#findComment-5140577 Share on other sites
The Yncarne
I left out heretic astartes because it seemed pretty obvious and there’s plenty of stratagems and powers that affect that keyword. And as an aside, I wish GW would use punctuation and qualifiers when using keywords. “Keywords daemon or vehicle”. I do agree about the butcher cannons; they have no good targets. I disagree with the idea that don’t take a chaos version just because the imperial version is better “99%” of the time. It may still be good in covering a shortcoming in the list such as transporting 20 models, look cool, or even better, be a fun painting project. If I played only to win I wouldn’t be playing Thousand Sons. BoomWolf
Well, naturally in a pure tactics thread I'm talking about being as win-oriented as humanly possible in a tournament mindset. When casual gaming, I'm running way too many rubrics and scarabs to be considered serious XD When you casual, you can play almost anything and be ok. But as a general concept, I don't believe in "plunging in holes" as a grand strategy, but instead "double down on your strengths". Mainly speaking, a hell lot of powerful characters hiding behind screens of annoying horrors, with the actual sons being mainly ahriman and princes. Prot
Well Knights definitely work for Chaos. Someone just did extremely well with a Death Guard oriented Knight list that was assisted by Cataphractii (Blightlords), and DP's (surprise!?!?) But this goes back to my original point.... I am much more sold on my Knight contingent than almost anything I see from Forgeworld. I guess maybe a Xiphon flyer? (I haven't used one, just against them once in a while.) Like I said I have a new Decimator I just can't convince myself to build/play. To me, I just love the look of it and that's why I'd play it. :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/349296-thousand-sons-and-forge-world/#findComment-5141091 Share on other sites
