Shapeways quality

I've been a fan of shapeways for a long time now, spent hundred of £ with them (shields, weapons, shoulder pads etc.), so decided to get some heads, they were expensive but I thought what the hell.

So I was surprised when I received such awful quality products:

So the white part of each model is rough residue that will not come of, you can't wash it or even scrape it off, every item is ruined.  Dropped shapeways a line about this and was eventually told this:

Like I said, I was a big fan of shapeways, but for the price you pay for their items and this response about not being able to guarantee quality, I'm done with them.

That's a relatively common problem with Shapeway's depending on which material the product is sold as. If you're going to buy from them, try to ensure that it's Smooth Fine Detail Plastic that you're buying; it's the most reliable material.

In the meantime, if you're looking for an alternative solution in terms of bits for Space Wolves, check out the usual sites like Kromlech, Master Crafted Miniatures and KF Studio.

Which store did the heads?

I use popgoesthemonkey for shoulder pads mostly.

Their axes are overly large for power armor and the rune work comes out poorly on the axes

Their boarding shields are flimsy and break easily.

So the heads came from Aurel and they are really good sculpts.  I have had a ton of stuff from PopGoesTheMonkey and every print has been perfect.  As for printing location, I think these are printed in Sweden, but I'm sure all my previous orders have come from there too.

Shapeways did get back to me again and said that it's normal part of the printing process and keep going on about the white colour does not a sign of a printing issue, it's just staining from the holding agent, but the fact is where the material is white, it's a rough surface, I was slightly lucky in that the rough parts are in the hair and neck and back of the head, if it had been on the front of the face they would have been totally unusable.  I also bought 3 weapons and the rough surface covers most of the pieces so I think they are going to end up looking rubbish even when painted.

Acetone or Simple Green will apparently remove the residue from the prints. Simple Green seems to be less aggressive on the plastic so may be the better option if it is available.
