Iron Halo Panic

Recommended Posts

With the Commander being discontinued (I need to stock up on capes and eagle backpacks), there goes the prime source for Iron Halos as well.

EDIT: he's still around. My question further down is still valid though.

I mean, sure, you could just slap the Tac Squad shoulder pad one on your captain, but doesn't he need a more epic pauldron?

I'm waiting for a shipment of some halos from the Assault Terminator box (they'd look nice on a captain as well, and if they're too large, they'll look nice on Terminator Captains anyway), but those are few and far between in most bitz stores.

Also, I'm aware that the Terminator Captain comes with the most overdesigned halo of all time - which I like and want to use, but not on regular guys.

With all that halo frenzy, I came to thinking... are those things so hard to find because everybody wants them or do you just take it for granted that your captains have one and don't model them like grenades and Bolt Pistols ('cause if you do those, you do the halo as well)?

I have used several sprues of Sternguard to tart up all my Marines of higher rank extensively.

Ich also quite strict about my modeling insignia on Codex compliant Chapters - every Sergeant has a halo badge, every 1st company guy his crux... but those are all readily available.

Personally, I always considered a Captain's invulnerable as more of a sign of their skill/experience (kind of how in 30k Fulgrim has a 3++ in CQC to represent his peerless swordsmanship) than a piece of wargear, per se. That's at least how I mentally processed it.

So, in short, I never went that crazy with specifically modelling an Iron Halo. The Captain models typically stand out enough that it's clear who they are and what sort of abilities he has.

my captains always have an iron halo. they have it in their default wargear so technically dont need to be modeled with it, but i always do.

Where as I actually go as far as to clip them off or replace the backpack with something basic because “reasonable marines” don’t see the point in making their commander more of a target for snipers than necessary. Totally with Blindhamster on it being default wargear, turning it into a personal modeling/fluff choice ;)

As far as modeling options go, the iron halo isn't just worn as a halo-like device upon the backpack. It might be incorporated into an embossed laurel, or an amulet (much like the rosarius of the chaplains or Goge Vandire), or a decoration upon the chest, or a heraldic tilt shield, or any number of other alternatives.

My trouble with kitbashing stuff like that is that I can't unsee what it used to be - if I cut a crest off a Warding Stave and put in on my Captain, he would always be the guy with the stave on his head.

Even worse, with other peoples' conversions, I can unsee it! But once I was part of the process...
