Summer of Reading 2018: Day One

Two blades, equal and opposite, crafted by the Emperor Himself. Two warriors, gifted with the blades. Two stories entwining. Two destinies unfolding, as only the Master of Mankind could foresee.

READ IT BECAUSE
This is truly a Horus Heresy story unlike any other. Chris Wraight crafts an elegiac look at two heroes of the Heresy, through the blades that bond them and forge a destiny that may well extend far beyond the stories that have yet been told…

THE STORY
This is the story of two blades, spears crafted by the hand of the Emperor Himself in the days long before the birth of the Imperium. Linked, equal but opposite, these blades are destined to be wielded by two of the greatest heroes of the Age of Darkness. And as the spears themselves, Appolonian and Dionysian, are equal and opposite, so too are those to whom they were gifted. This is their story too. The warrior-scholar, a savant and a servant. The warrior-king, a savage and a soldier. Their fates entwined in ways they do not understand, they carry the blades as both gift and curse, fulfilment of destiny unseen by any save the Master of Mankind.

Reading it now

The emperor Made two spears, twinned, before he fully conquered earth, things for what was yet to come.

spoilers

Valdor was given one spear, the spear showed him the truth of whom he killed, who they were, what made them become as they are, and finally their death.

The emperor made it to remind Valdor of what death is, what mortality is, as a check, to remind Valdor of humanity, of the frailty, mortality of it.

The other, Russ's blade.

excerpt

"‘They were twins, our weapons,’ Valdor says, a few final words before Russ will swagger off into the firelit dark. ‘Both impart truths. I do not know what yours are. Mine are… hard to bear.’"

The Apollonian SPear, is Valdor's SPear

- Illuminates the imperfections of those it strikes to its wielder alone.

The Gungir Spear is Russ's spear ( revealed in wolfsbane)

- Illuminates Truths to those it strikes, not the wielder

When Russ announces his departure, and states he will return for the wolftime.

Valdor knows right when this occurs. (spears might be talking to each other, even though Russ's spear was on a shrineworld)

Valdor leaves the same night, but does not tell anyone.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

uhh, so... does this mean?

that valdor left to meet with russ, wherever they went?

and the WOlftime, and the arrival of Russ in 40k, might also be the return of constantine valdor?

cause holy :censored:

the ramifications of this simple short story, seem rather large.

this short story takes place, before the founding of the imperium, after the wheel of fire, during and after the events of the horus heresy.

fun quick read, 9/10

Thanks for the info, just finished reading it and it’s indeed shocking! Finally some light on Valdor vanishing!

I’d buy the crap out of that triumvirate. And I’d watch the budd cop movie of Valdor and Russ, Lethal Weapon 41k.

Huh.... curious now.

Didn't Ragnar poke Magnus with the spear? I wonder what truth was revealed to Magnus. Also interesting how Magnus continues to be bad after being poked by the truth spear knowing how he was manipulated by the chaos gods and Horus.... but he was probably way far gone by then.

it could be that

the truth of what the primarchs are was revealed to magnus, as it was revealed to russ. and magnus took it, as the path he chose was correct, and the emperor is a hypocrite.

when russ learned this he was distraught, about what he, and his brothers were.

but Gungir reveals a different truth to everyone.

but theres also the chance, that the spear will not operate correctly unless Russ himself uses it, or another being  (primarch) were to use it.

it is definitely a psykers weapon, a wyrd weapon.

Pretty awesome stuff there. Can't wait to see where GW is going with all this.

Also about this:

Would be interesting to see what happens to the person who uses the spear to off big E himself. :teehee:

Russ and Valdor, OTP

I haven't write a fanfic in 12 years, time to dust off the ole' ff.net account

(Joking of course)

...

(Or am I?)

Hmmm valdor and Russ going out on the same night?

Russ: last few years have been pretty rough haven’t they? Feel like I haven’t had weekend off since Ullanor.

Valdor: I hear that, fancy a pint tomorrow night?

10,000 year pub crawl ensues. Russ wakes up with worst hangover ever, finds traitor primarchs everywhere. Wolftime.

The emperor out drank him in 3 days, so I imagine 10,000 years would have quite an impact. Also the Scandinavian people I know drink a lot, still get bad hangovers but carry on regardless.

No he didn't (unless they've retconned it). The story goes that Empy turns up to Russ's feast hall, and challenges him to 3 tasks, Russ initially picks eating and drinking, winning both (and draining the feast dry in the process). Empy then calls Russ a gluttonous blowhard, only fit for eating and drinking (or something along those lines), provoking Russ into naming the third trial as a fight. At this point Empy drops his cloak and glamour, going full gold etc., fights Russ for a bit and wins by socking Russ in the face with his power fist. When Russ wakes up within the hour he swears fealty, claiming his headache is due to the booze, not the power fist.

It is possible that they could return, that the twins have been sleeping this whole time waiting for their master's and that Bjorn has been tangled up in the fate of those spears. Gungnir could awaken and call to Bjorn or somehow relay a message to him. But we'll have to wait and see what the future holds for the master's of the 10,000 and Rout
