What do soldiers carry with them during engagements?

Recommended Posts

In Blackhawk Down, there is a scene were one soldier tells the new guy he isn't putting his rear plate in his body armor as he doesn't plan on getting shot in the back. He recommends loading up on extra ammo and water. He then later gets shot in the back, but its a realistic view of combat.

That was very stupid of that soldier as they were going into urban area where enemy can appear from any side.

"You want me to tend a wound on your back? I am sorry, I can not cure cowardice." is what I had to think of. 40k is so deliciously OTT, I love it :D

We're not here to discuss a film but rather 40k, please remember the rules when posting - this includes not dodging the swear filter. If not, you will find no amount of armour or running away can save you from the wrath of the commissariat ;)

My most humble apologies.

Guardsmen would likely have a few different loadouts depending on if they had a base to go home to, how far away they were from support, what kind of unit they are in, what enemy they are facing, etc.

Guardmen defending a fort, strong point, or fire base would likely not have much equipment physically on them during a fight, as they could leave it in storage near enough to get to it if they needed it.

Guardsmen on a patrol, but returning to a base within a day or two would have a little bit more on them.

Guardsmen way out on their own past the front line would have to carry everything with them either on them physically or in any vehicles they had available. If they expected to be out for a lengthy stay they would likely have extra equipment strapped to the outside of any supporting vehicles as well.

Guardsmen mounted in a chimera, or crew for a Leman Russ, Basilisk, or other vehicle will likely have less stuff on the soldier, as it would be in the vehicle.

Personally, I've given each of my guardsmen a backpack just because it looks cooler, it really makes a difference with the Cadian Shock Trooper models in my opinion to give them backpacks and the canteen/bayonet belt attachment. My opinion is that the backpacks make their heads look like a more natural scale.

The question also is, how much supplies does the Imperium get them? I suppose it will depend on the regiment. A Cadian or Vostroyan regiment will probably given them more equipment than a Valhallan would, for example. Krieg is all about trenches, so they probably have most of their stuff at the nearest supply point. Elysians would probably not carry much due to aerial insertion. To be fair, I kind of want to convert a Chimera to have some equipment strapped to it. I usually stick some IK stuff into the army and rarely resort to more than 3 IS and 2-3 HWS. Makes sense that they arrive via Chimera and then do the engagement on foot.
