So when do you think Russ will be back?

Actually, that idea for a Primaris or Avatar or Living God or (something) to define a new unit type in the LoW slot list with a hard limit of one every full 2,000 points makes perfect sense.

Russ, Lion, Guilliman, Valdor, Celestine, Angron, Magnus, Fulgrim, Isha, etc....

Yea, I'm rather liking the potential here. The only real problem will be the follow through. That's always the hard part; still, I think as a concept, without doing the whole appease players, but instead, actually fluffing out the story and, not my word, giving, "fluffstification," to each, could truly advance the story both in quality and actually, ya know, advance said story!

Hm...

Fulgrim or angron can easily return without a campaign, like the their two chaos primarchs. So between now and January we could potentially see one of them return, maybe in November, after GSC in September and orks on October. Especially if we are AOS slaanesh next.

This would mean a 2 year anniversary of gathering storm in January. 3 parts again, Russ being the focus of one book.

Fulgrim already returned. He's back and active in the fluff.

When did this happen in current 40k storyline?

I haven't read the book but I believe in a part of The Gathering Storm Fulgrim is shown seeing Guilliman up and going agains and had a plan to bring him low.

As for the topic, I do not expect Russ soon IRL. Orks and Sisters are goinf to be big releases for GW and carry a lot of weight and time to do them right. And untill all of that is finished I think we might see another bomb drop.

Lorewise, the latest writing has been pumping up Vigilus as a sort of new Cadia, heavily fortified beset by enemies and close to the Warp. So a great place to reintroduce a character

I currently he will be on the heels of a Daemon Primarch as last minute saves and desperate situations is what a lot of GW stories come to (and I am still a sucker for them). So let say Vigilus beset by Fulgrim and Magnus (they as far as I recall the Primarchs that could work best together, within the four Legions dedicated to a single God) and Russ showing uo to execute the foolish enemies of the Allfather.

I would expect there to be a large christmas release. Has a chance of being then, but we're probably overdue some Chaos or Xenos released at that point. Probably some form of craftworld Eldar mockery. Chance would be a fine thing if it were "Santa Russ and his merry band of gentle elves".

Probably April 2019 at my best slightly informed by a gnats arse hair guess. By that point the book(s) (because we all know how long they're going to string this plot out) will have been through editing/production/release... Definitely going to take up one of the quarterly slots for sure.

I think the return of russ, and how that will be done, might have been shown already.

in wolfsbane

I think Njal and a group or runepriests will have to go to the door to the Fenrisian warp echo( the underverse)

Bjorn will have to go to the wyrd stone, and act as a beacon once more, he may never look into it, or the door closes.

I think someone will retrieve the Gungir, russ's spear from garm, and throw it into the gate of the underverse.

then it will act as a beacon once in the udnerverse and russ will find it, and leave through the gate with the remnants of his company.

what is important is that, the gate only opens for 1 day a year, and you need rune priests to open it for that to happen.

(might see njal get entombed in a dread as the rune priests have to fight wights as soon as the open the gate)

but before this, bjorn will have to show his brothers where teh underverse gate was, and they will have to unseal it.

then when russ comes back, arjac and the other iron priests will forge/modify equipment for him.

Arjac will add the teleport beacon to russ's spear, allowing him to instantly teleport it back into his hand.

Runic helfrost/hoarfrost armor, that has saves against the mortal wounds, at the same time slowing foes around him and hurting them.

additionally, I think we might have seen Russ's back pack.

where? look in the new codex, there is a new space wolf art work that is spotted through out it several times.

A double headed wolf with a gem, and wings made of stylized blades, and an iron halo

what does that closely resemble? Guillimans backpack.

I would'nt be surprised if Cawl works with The iron priests on fenris to make the new equipment sets for russ

Right around the time GW realizes they aren't going to be able to sustain last years sales numbers across the lifetime of 8th because there are no new models/editions to pump out. Next year will be very telling as to the future of 40k release wise.

I think before they release Russ they would need to do a few things.

1) there seem to be two camps for what Russ would be if he comes back, two model kit with Werewolf Russ, or Old man Russ. They need to figure out a way to make both camps happy.

2) I think they need to release some old school marine models with them. The player base is convinced that primaris are replacing regular marines. Which considering most primaris units are bad, have no unique stratagems, and have a play style which this edition does not favor seems really silly. Either way I think they need to address it with Russ because fluff wise he won't show up by himself (well probably won't)

3) Have a plan for someone from black library to write a Bjorn Russ encounter.

Personally with the amount of drama the codex generated, I think they should just release the Lion.

I'll solve easily point 1 by killing the werewolf Russ camp.

Edit: I meant to say it would be great to make a meetup and have a wolf con between all of us who would like to see a werewolf Russ. If you all leave here your details and address I'll contact you for that.

I only want it to be a dual kit.....

1. Odin RUss

2. Morkai the death god wolf of fenris - at his side

I don't know that there's ever really been a big group that WANT a werewolf Russ as maybe a group who's "ok" if he comes back as a Wulfen. I think most prefer the "older wiser" Russ. Maybe I'm wrong though.

How about having multiple options for Russ' head? I personally favor a human-looking "Old Man Russ," but we can justify a "Werewolf Russ" head by saying that's a psychic projection the Primarch uses to intimidate his opponents, and write rules for how Russ can use "parlor tricks" he learned during his self-exile to reduce his foes' Leadership, Initiative, and/or Attacks.

I feel that odin russ wielding the spear will be the model we end up with.

We have an army of werewolves who stand up strait and talk... It doesn't really stand to reason that big daddy would also be a wolf man among wolf men.

I've always seen Russ as someone who stands apart from his own legion. Like a dog's master if you will... Him then becoming a dog man would be... weird...

i think of it.

Russ is a Wolf who dreamt of being a man

his astartes are men who dreamt of being a wolf

Since when do Wulfen talk? All the books I read have them mulling around like well... wolves. They seem incapable of talking or high cognitive thinking.

Having a Primarch come back as a Wulfen is bad idea. You can't really show that to the Imperial citizens, not to mention how does everyone else deal with it? Do they just jail him in the basement until the time for combat begins like SWs do with the Wulfen. Is that what we want for our Primarch is to be living in Roboutes basement until he needs Russ?

I think the whole twin spear thing is a hint that maybe Valdor and Russ are connected. Maybe Valdor will tutor or guide Russ as he ages into Old Man Russ or Odin Russ. Learning to take up the spear and fight with it.

I think he'll show up at the conclusion of Vigilus.  It's appearing that there will be a fair amount of play for this in campaigns for the foreseeable future.  Its near a must keep for the Imperium to maintain paths through the webway.  You've got GSC, Orks, Tyranids on their way, Adept. Mech. failing to cleanse the planet and potentially additional armies to add in.  In other words, half the universe is paying attention to this one planet.  What better, more public way for him to return than to rescue them from a near catastrophe than be the catalyst of rescue on Vigilus
