The Lion and the Wolf combos

So I stepped by our most beloved cousins sub forum and recommended the following as a unit to add to their DA lists for the stratagem:

The easiest plug and play from our SW codex could be a supreme command detachment with:

-Njal

-Rune priest with armour of Russ

-Rune priest with wulfen stone

-Arjac Rockfist

If you want to buff a character, Arjac with the lion and the wolf, plus the armour of Russ and Wulfen stone will turn him into a monster capable of going 101 against anything and anyone.

Just to compare him in melee to Guilliman (peak Imperium fighter atm) when buffed as so:

WS: Arjac 1+ / Guilliman 2+

S: Arjac 6 / Guilliman 6

T: Arjac 4 / Guilliman 6

W: Arjac 5 / Guilliman 9

A: Arjac 7 / Guilliman 7

Save: Both 2+/3++

Arjac abilities:

- DMG reduction of 1

- Re-roll failed hits against characters

- Re-roll failed wound rolls of 1

- Heroic intervention

- Counter attack

- Force enemy unit within 1' to fight last

Guilliman abilities:

- Revive with D6 wounds on a 4+

- Re-roll failed hits

- Re-roll failed wound rolls of 1

Weapons:

- Foehammer: S X2 / AP -3 / D D3 (3 against characters)

- Hand of Dominion: S X2 / AP -3 / D 3

- Emperor's sword: S +2 / AP -4 / D 3 + D3 mortal wounds on rolls of 6

Points:

- Guilliman: 400

- Arjac plus 2 rune priests: 345

- Arjac plus 3 rune priests: 445

- Arjac plus Njal and 2 rune priests: 498

I'd like to see that duel plus with Arjac you get the 3 Rune priests for almost the same points. In any case 17.25 to 25% of your army seems like a good investment for that level of brutality!

And I think I convinced myself. Arjac would actually have a shot at duelling Guilliman and that's without accounting that the 3RP could help him in that fight (or 2RP for a total point cost of 345).

It is a nice combo I have to say. I am just not sure Arjac is the best recipient. Except Dawneagle Shield Captains and Guilliman I fail to remember any other Characters where the extra strength of Arjac makes a change over S10. As so I think a TH Wolf Lord is generally a better idea, since you can give the Wulfen Stone to him and not pay for another character to carry it.

As for duelling Guilliman, on a one on one Arjac would still lose. Arjac does 6.6 wounds to Guilliman while he gives back 3.8 (without counting the Mortal Wounds). Each RP do 1 wound (a little bit less actually, thinking about staves simce the AP is irrelvamt but the extra strength helps) so Guilliman is probably still up (if you manage to get Fury of the Wolf Spirits you do an extra .7 wounds). He just needs to split his attacks, 4 to the RP with the armour of Russ two to Arjac or the other RP (or 3 and 3 if he feel confident) to severly hurt you and get the first swing next fight and pribably win it.

Compare that to too Wulfen Lords and a PF Wolf Priest, same Relics. One is your Warlord qith Saga of the Wolfkin the other get Lion amd the Wolf, making two WL with 6 attacks. The extra strength is useless, but due to the WP you can heal the mortal wound and activate Mentor's Guidance and Seeking a Saga. Each WL does on average 5.2 wounds and the WP does 1.7 wpunds by himself. That is pretty likely to make Guilliman fall and unable to retialite. That for a bit under 370 so on less than the 3 RP options which is the only semiguaranteed option to kill Guilliman.

Another nice thing with the WL is that since one of them is carrying the armour, if he want to get rid of it, it is far more dangerous, since you can use Only in Death Does Duty End, hitting him harder than if you used it on a Rune Priest only.

I think more than Characters it is best to think of Primarchs as Tanks or Knights and deal with them not as a duel (where Arjac os one of the best in the game) but as taking a tank out of battle.

Edit: Changed thr averga wounds for Arajc since he makes a little more, I was 1 attack under.

That's epic, still due to the armour of Russ he always attacks first so he deals 2x 6.6 w whilst G only attacks back with 3.8, so unless G gets lucky with 6s, Arjac beats him without even needing the rp other than to carry relics!

Remember that Roboute get to attack the RP carrying the relic before Arjac attacks. And even if he does split only three attacks to the RP that is a 4.2 wounds to the RP with the relic. After he is dead Guilliman get to strike first (and he can always do Only in Death Does Duty End too).

While Arjac hits harder he does have only almost half the wounds. If Guilliman deidcates all his attacks to Arjac if you count mortal wounds it goes up to 5.8, which is a dead Arjac and an alive Guilliman (bascially he only needs to kill the armour of Russ and then he wins the duel, amd his the Emperor's Sword that is pretty easy).

Edit: An also important thing to consider is his revival. Most likely your opponent will save a CP for that so it is a 75% chance of him.coming back. Due to where he is standing he will be able to shoot in his turn, and the Hand of Dominion can kill an RP in a round of shooting (as well as a WP, WGBL or a WL without the SS). As such with those numbers I think that Arjac and his RP would fall (and probably the WL and WP too, altbough they force more CP to be used for them.to fall).

Here is what I am running for Lion and the Wolf smash team:

Arjac - buffed from Lion and the Wolf .  Fights at S12 with 7 attacks(8 attacks once Saga is aura), rerolling failed hits and wound rolls of 1. Doing 3 dam vs. characters

Wolf Lord - jump pack, TH/SS, Saga of Wolfkin, Wulfen Stone.  Fights at S8 with 6 attacks, rerolling hits and wounds of 1.  Doing 3 dam

Rune Priest - Jump Pack, Armor of Russ, Tempest's Wrath

Dark Angels Librarian - jump pack, Eye of the Unseen, Aversion, Mind Wipe

Oddly enough the DA Librarian is an awesome close combat debuffer.  Aversion gives -1 to hit and stacks with Tempest's Wrath.  Mind Wipe gives -1WS/BS/Ld until end of battle, and Eye of the Unseen is a 3" debuff aura, enemy is -1Ld and all characters must fight last.  Can swap Mind Wipe for Mind Worm, which can make an entire enemy unit fight last.

As a team they can make one enemy unit fight at -1WS and -2 to hit, and force the enemy to fight last 3 different ways.

This team supported by a squad of TH/SS Wulfen is enough to eliminate a Knight Castellen in one turn.
