Debris for Isstvan V bases

Recommended Posts

I am building Isstvan V bases for my Word Bearers army and will be using this as the recipe for how I'll do them:

I really want to add some appropriate debris for Isstvan V other than a few pieces of steel bars and a skull. Would you guys mind sharing your examples of debris on your bases/lending me some ideas?

I used some spare Rhino hatches, which would be appropriate for Istvaan - if you build a Rhino, you'll have the Razorback hatch left over, and vice versa.

If you can get your hands on some spare track it all adds to the lots of wreckage look

I see the dropsite massacre as heavily involving desperate close combat. I'd concentrate on body parts and weapons with a few vehicle bits thrown in. Hmm, thinking about it I just realized I haven't seen many combat knives on bases. A few of those might give you a unique look.

Polystyrene profiles are available in many shapes, e.g. L, U, T, I/H beams are great for metal used in buildings & fortifications, round hollow profiles make great pipes and round sticks can be used for thin pipes/cables.

Spare purity seals and imperial/chaos icons could be strewn about the landscape.

(Most makes of) bolters use caseless ammunition (according to fluff), but spend shell casings could litter the floor.

Similarly, dropped equipment like spare ammo, supply bags, field kit, auspex, minor relics - anything an army preparing for a crusade would be handling while waiting for new orders. Anything that would be dropped when the sudden call to arms comes.

With the preliminary bombardment, maybe even some unexploded ordnance.

Definately seconding the cut up sprue - that's usefull for modelling various odds and ends. And upcycling stuff which would otherwise end up in the bin is always good.

E.g. pieces of sprue cut to length can serve as sidewalk cap stones. Two tilted/diagonal cuts can make a shape like a gold bar. Four such pieces but a bit longer can make a window frame. Alternating sprue and upside down sprue makes for an almost wood like surface. And so on.

Cool, thanks for the responses guys. The Urgall Depression site of the Drop Site Massacre isn't really and urban area and that's why ive shied away from rubble or urban looking bases. It just doesn't match the black sands environment of that particular section of Isstvan V.

I definitely think I'll included some equipment items. Honestly, a lot of your ideas sound like they would make pretty cool terrain on an Drop Site Massacre themed table for a Narrative or Campaign. I'll have to keep a few in my back pocket of ideas.

I really wish there was more access to open hands to model dead marines with.

I got a few more good ideas after looking at Fulgrim's and Ferrus Manus' bases. I don't know why I didn't think to do that before. I've noticed a lot on the character series bases that they are littered with power armor components like broken pieces of backpacks and shoulder pads. In particular of the the shoulder pad, I don't know how they attach to the armor and it always seemed weird to be that they would just fall off and be laying around. I guess after a large enough explosion though.

I've added some bits from different space marine kits to the bases of my minis

The Character Series minis also have some great dead marines, but obviously they're less accessible than the odd shoulder plate, helmet, or torso from a plastic kit.
