Mixed Warbands

Recommended Posts

I was planning on running my Crimson Slaughter as a composite of Night Lords and Alpha Legion to represent the Fear effect and the concealing effect from Kranon's Helguard (fluff-wise they will be offshoots from the Crimson Slaughter mixed with mutated Night Lords, working on what name I like for them). Also, as a pet project I plan on making a Fear based army with a Night Lords dettachment and a HERETIC ASTARTES soup dettachment with things like Mutaliths and Noxious Blight Bringers.

Hi Brother Marbas, I also saw your post in the Lost & the Damned sub-forum regarding lore.

I myself happen to use the Renegades & Heretics list + Death Guard to represent my Guardsman unintentionally infecting Imperial bases (with artillery from R&H + Nurglings from the respective index and codex).  I also face a player who just mixes and matches the best cult units from different books (he's a good guy, just an engineer who wants to select the best components).  He has no theme, he's selecting based mainly on game mechanics there.  He's a good roleplayer, so if he really put his mind to it, I bet he could come up with a narrative-HQ that would explain how he assembled all these disparate groups under him (like the above, that's a good story!)

Because I saw your Lost & Damned post, I was also thinking of options to combine Chaos Space Marines with Renegades & Heretics.  What the R&H index from Forge World from a gameplay perspective was an Allied Toolkit that Chaos factions could draw from for otherwise unavailable weapons.  A few examples combining gameplay with fluff:

Alpha Legion with pseudo-Sniper Scouts - Chaos does not get Sniper Rifles normally.  The R&H index offers an Elite unit, Marauders, that can take Sniper Rifles, though.  They even have a special rule that gives them a penalty to hit them, just like Alpha Legion.  So inline with how Alpha Legion sometimes imitates Loyalists, this pseudo-Sniper Scouts are an intriguing option.  This is also one of the few good units from the R&H book that hasn't been nerfed.

Iron Warriors with Indirect Fire Artillery - to reflect their masters of siegecraft, Iron Warrior armies can consider using IG artillery units thanks to R&H.  Example would be the Earthshaker Battery, just a big ol' siege gun, looks beautiful in leadbelcher and yellow/black hazard stripes.  Looks very thematic on the battlefield, something to differentiate them from other Traitor Legionnaires, and I've seen 1 player do this in my meta.  Only downsides are you don't get the same full selection as IG does, so double-check what the R&H book offers before buying, but more importantly, the new mini-Knight Armiger Helverin (from the free Renegade Knights codex) actually is better bang-for-the-points now (due to some point nerfs, plus the Helverin is just a really good deal for its points).

Just some ideas in the spirit of being helpful, I know you may not have been asking about R&H specifically here, but there's some neat concepts to be had.

My Army is Renegades + the 4 cult legions because of my armies fluff, in which there were 5 "courts" which each represent a god and then chaos undivided. Recently, they've expanded to 7 cults with the addition of an allied dark forgeworld (The Court of Bone) and their new Primaris brethren, who were born of the Geneseed of the Iron Warriors (The Court of Renewal). They also have R&H allies in the form of the Court of Bone's corrupted Skitarii.

Forge World has a character, Arkos The Faithless, who has both [check the FAQ] the ALPHA LEGION and THE FAITHLESS keywords. He himself has an aura that adds 1 to advance and charge rolls of THE FAITHLESS units. According to most, rules wise THE FAITHLESS are treated as Renegades since there is no THE FAITHLESS legion trait. For a character such as Arkos, ALPHA LEGION probably has the better trait, so the best way to use him would be with him in an ALPHA LEGION dettachment, with shooty models, and with THE FAITHLESS models as melee units.
