Citadel Golden Yellow replacement?

Hi guys,

I’m looking for some help. My pot of Golden Yellow has finally given up the ghost and I need a replacement. The Yriel Yellow isn’t quite the right colour, being a bit too yellow where golden had more orange in it.

Does anyone have a good match for this colour? Not bothered about brand as I’m sure I can get anything from the internet I just want a good colour match.

Cheers

Vogon.

I think the Coat D´Arms range is made by the old supplier to GW, and still produces the old paints under new names, or in some cases the old ones - I suspect this is the reason why GW has chosen names that can be protected for the new range.

If you're in Europe, Hasslefree minis sells the range, and they have Golden Yellow in stock. For 1,67 pounds it's worth a try, I'd say.

Coat D´Arms are the old, old paint supplier from the taller round then hex pot days (before the stubbier black lidded 'bullet pot' days.

There was the occasional subtle change between them, (some colours vanished, a few new ones appeared, a couple shifted slightly) but they are a great range, you just have to alter how you thin them as they are at base thinner than the more recent GW ones.

Personally I use them mostly for their inks and because I mush prefer the finish of Chaos black to Abbadon black.

If that doesn't work, Mike McVey was the person who designed that early GW range (that Coat D'Arms copies).

He also designed Privateer Press' P3 paint range, and as the exact same bottles might give away, all three are (were) produced by the same company (HMG paints, IIRC).

Long story short being: I have both the CDA and P3 lines, and they are essentially identical. I believe P3's Heartfire would also match the old Golden Yellow.

The Vallejo Game colors are matched to the old GW colors. However, they're not the same pigments or emulsion formula, so they don't have the same opacity or mix the same way.

The P3 paints are the same stuff as Coat D'Arms and the old GW paints - I believe they're made by the same company. None of my local stores carry the P3 paints, but I like them so much that I think it's worth it to order them online. (Except for metallics. I've never had a good experience with a P3 metallic, so I use Vallejo for that.) I use a lot of Heartfire on my Howling Griffons.

There's a theory about the pop top lids on P3 paints that prolonged exposure to direct sunlight causes them to crack or break at an accelerated rate. My workspace gets direct morning sunlight; I had a lot of issues with lids breaking, and it seemed like I had a lot fewer issues when I started storing the pots in a drawer or simply leaving the paper towel I wipe my brush on covering them. That's hardly a controlled scientific experiment, but it still might be good to know.
